Friday 15 May 6.00 pm OPENING OF EXHIBITION Mary Ann Gelly Fred Hellier Paul Mosse George Vaughan Introduction and official opening of the 5th Barrow River Arts Festival by Sean Hardie Improvisations on Bass and Saxophone Barry Guy and Michael Niesemann Mary Ann Gelly moved to Co Kilkenny 20 years ago and resides in Inistioge. She studied sculpture in University of Georgia, USA, and Art History at Trinity College, Dublin. Recent exhibitions include the Happy Valley Festival, Thomastown, and Kilkenny Arts Festival. She is a member of the Kilkenny Life Drawing Group since 2006. Fred Hellier was born in London and studied at the University of London and Goldsmiths’ College School of Art. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows throughout the UK and Canada. He has been a visiting lecturer at Université Laval in Québec City. His paintings, constructions and drawings are in a number of private and public collections. Paul Mosse was born in Co. Kilkenny. From 1966 -1970 he studied at The Chelsea School of Art, London. He has exhibited nationally and internationally and his work is represented in many private and public collections. He was elected to Aosdana in 2007. George Vaughan studied at the Limerick School of Art, Limerick, the National College of Art, Dublin, Fischerkoesen Film Studios, Germany and the College of Music, Dublin. He has exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions throughout the country. His work can be found in collections such as The Arts Council of Ireland, Office of Public Works, Butler Gallery, Limerick City Gallery and private collections in Ireland and abroad. The exhibition will run throughout the festival and may be viewed between events. 7.30 pm LIEDER RECITAL Anja Pöche soprano Finghin Collins piano Robert Schumann 1810-1856 Six poems by Nikolaus Lenau and Requiem op. 90 (composed 1850) Liederkreis op. 39 Six Songs op. 107 Anja Pöche is a member of the à-capella ensemble Calmus, one of the most exciting voices in vocal music and well known to the Irish audiences. She performs regularly as a solo singer in oratorio and cantata concerts throughout Europe and the USA, often with emphasis on J.S. Bach and his contemporaries. She has established a close relationship with Camerata Kilkenny and the Barrow River Arts Festival ever since her first, much acclaimed, Irish appearance in 2011. Finghin Collins makes a welcome return since he performed a lieder recital with the tenor James Gilchrist at the very first Barrow River Arts Festival back in 2011. One of the most important musicians to emerge from Ireland in recent times he established his international reputation by winning the 1999 Clara Haskil International Piano Competition. Since then he has performed with leading orchestras throughout the world. Among his many recordings are two double CDs of Schumann’s solo piano music for Claves Records in Switzerland which have received widespread acclaim, including Editor’s Choice in Gramophone magazine in 2006. 'In this limited-edition publication, composer Benjamin Dwyer, poet Kimberly Campanello, violist Garth Knox and author/editor Jonathan Creasy come together to create a truly unique work of art. With musical score, performance, poems and commentary, the book documents years of artistic research and practice by a world-class group of artists. Designed in collaboration with Distinctive Repetition studio, Imagines is one of the most innovative and high-quality books produced this year in Ireland.' 3.30 pm DUO Savina Yannatou voice Barry Guy bass Songs and Improvisations Savina Yannatou’s unusual curriculum vitae includes songs for children and adults, a repertoire ranging from the Mediaeval to the Baroque, the Mediterranean to the Balkans, from Sephardic to Smyrnaean traditions, and from free improvisation through free jazz to music that defies classification. "Dark-toned but ambrosial, highly disciplined yet seemingly bursting with a soul of pure flame, the rather staggering Athens-born singer Savina Yannatou is a virtuosic chameleon adept at an extensive range of vocal tradition…..” John Payne, L.A. Weekly Barry Guy is a renowned improviser and composer influential in the world of jazz and free improvisation as in that of contemporary music. His concert works for chamber orchestras, chamber groups and soloists have been widely performed and his skilful and inventive writing has resulted in an exceptional series of compositions. His most recent project is the “Blue Shroud Band” which performs his work “The Blue Shroud” based on Picasso’s painting “Guernica” with texts by the Irish poet Kerry Hardie. Barry Guy continues to give solo recitals throughout Europe as well as continuing associations with colleagues involved in improvised, baroque and contemporary music. Mozart 1756-1791 Clarinet Quintet in A K. 581 Johannes Brahms 1833-1897 Clarinet Quintet in B minor Op. 115 The Badke Quartet, formed in 2002, is widely recognised as one of Britain’s finest string quartets and has received widespread acclaim for its energetic and vibrant performances. It has worked with some of the world’s greatest string quartets and studied with Gabor Takács-Nagy at IMS Prussia Cove and members of the Alban Berg Quartet in Cologne. The Badke Quartet regularly perform at concert halls and festivals in the UK and abroad, including Aldeburgh, Montreux, Bad Kissingen, Malmö, Mecklenburg, Ljubljana, Santander, Aix-en-Provence, Verbier Presteigne, West Cork, London’s Wigmore Hall, Kings Place, and the Musikverein in Vienna. Her busy career combines concerti, recitals and chamber music. Leschenko has appeared in recital at the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Amsterdam Concertgebouw and Vienna Konzerthaus, and is a regular visitor to orchestras around the world including the Hallé Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, and Camerata Salzburg. Her most recent disc is a Liszt recital which has won several awards including a Choc du Monde de la Musique. Some of her regular chamber music partners include Martha Argerich, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Ivry Gitlis, Julian Rachlin, Maxim Rysanov, Heinrich Schiff, Mischa Maisky and Torleif Thedéen. The young Belgian-Israeli violist Nathan Braude is rapidly emerging as one of the most promising viola players of his generation. He has performed in many of the world's most prestigious concert venues including the Wigmore Hall in London, Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. His début recording for the Fuga Libera label with the complete works for viola, by the Belgian composer Joseph Jongen, has been released to great critical acclaim. Dublin born Barry McGovern’s distinguished acting career has covered film, television and in particular theatre where he has become internationally renowned for his interpretation of the works of Samuel Beckett. In 2012 he received an Ovation Awards nomination for Lead Actor in a Play for the role of Vladimir in the Center Theatre Group production of “Waiting for Godot” “Barry McGovern’s astounding performance was not only the best of the festival, but also among the best I’ve ever seen…genius, no other word for it” - Sun Herald. Tickets: 20.00 (15.00 concession) 3.30 pm TRIO Marilyn Crispell piano Barry Guy bass Paul Lytton percussion Compositions by Barry Guy and improvisations "Hearing Marilyn Crispell play solo piano is like monitoring an active volcano. She is one of a very few pianists who rise to the challenge of free jazz.” - The New York Times Marilyn Crispell has been a composer and performer of contemporary improvised music since 1978. For ten years, she was a member of the Anthony Braxton Quartet and the Reggie Workman Ensemble, and she has performed and recorded extensively as a soloist and with players on the American and international jazz scene. In 1996 she was given an Outstanding Alumni Award by the New England Conservatory, and in 2004, was cited as being one of their 100 most outstanding alumni of the past 100 years. Percussionist Paul Lytton is both an inventive, textural drummer in the tradition of European free jazz, and a pioneer in electronic sound processing and the use of homemade instruments of his own invention. Lytton made his first appearances on the British creative music scene in the late 60s , and his influence – particularly in live electronics can still be observed in the experimentation of a new generation of improvisers over 30 years later. Drawing on his vast experience as viola player of the Arditti Quartet and the Ensemble Intercontemporain and his close collaboration with most of the leading composers of today, he has become a unique performer of music of many different styles, ranging from minimalist understatement to the cutting edge of new techniques and new technologies. He has always felt at home as an improviser, and now more and more so as a composer also, deploying his musical ideas as innovative instrumental theatre. In this final concert of the 2015 Barrow River Arts Festival they are joined by German soprano Anja Pöche for choral and instrumental music of J.S. Bach including his sublime Wedding Cantata BWV 202 “Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten” with the German oboist Michael Niesemann as special guest. Mary Ann Gelly moved to Co Kilkenny 20 years ago and resides in Inistioge. She studied sculpture in University of Georgia, USA, and Art History at Trinity College, Dublin. Recent exhibitions include the Happy Valley Festival, Thomastown, and Kilkenny Arts Festival. She is a member of the Kilkenny Life Drawing Group since 2006.

Fred Hellier was born in London and studied at the University of London and Goldsmiths’ College School of Art. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows throughout the UK and Canada. Camerata Kilkenny is an acclaimed international ensemble founded by Swiss violinist Maya Homburger and the Irish harpsichordist and organist Malcolm Proud. They have performed at major festivals throughout Ireland and Europe. In this final concert of the 2015 Barrow River Arts Festival they are joined by German soprano Anja Pöche for choral and instrumental music of J.S. Bach including his sublime Wedding Cantata BWV 202 “Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten” with the German oboist Michael Niesemann as special guest.
