BJB WATERCLEAR TIPSMOULDS
All BJB WC series products produce mostoptimum results when cast into platinumbased (addition cure) silicone moulds. Some clients have had success in castingthe 80 Shore D water clears (never any ofthe lower durometer products) by bakingout their tin based systems overnight at66°C or utilising a well aged mould. Thisallows the methanol that causes theinhibition to dissipate.
For best results from silicone moulds, werecommend allowing the mould to fullycure, rinsing the mould in a light solutionof dishwashing detergent and warm water, then rinsing well with warm water anddrying well before casting. Avoidscrubbing the mould as it could affect thesurface detail on your mould.
Other mould mediums may be utilised butkeep in mind that the surface of the mouldwill be duplicated. You cannot obtain aglossy part from a rough mould. It is alsoimportant to remember that keeping themould and WC temperatures close toeach other will help eliminate inhibitionand chill marks.
RELEASE
Most mould releases will cause fogging orclouding of the part surface with the WCseries. We have seen excellent surfaceclarity when using J-Wax. We recommendthat testing be done prior to anyapplication of a release agent.
VACUUM vs PRESSURE
While both of these processes work wellseparately for eliminating air bubbles inthe part, using both will often produce thebest results. Vacuum will generallyeliminate 97% of the air and low pressureof 40-60psi can diminish the remainingamount.
VACUUM
When using vacuum it is best to de-air thematerial after mixing parts A&B togetherbefore casting the part. In most instancesyou will see the material continue tobubble under vacuum. An easy rule ofthumb for pulling vacuum is to mix A&B,pull vacuum, break, wipe sides with a stirstick, and pull vacuum again. This shouldbreak the surface tension and eliminatecontinued bubbling. We offer AF4 forassisting in de-aeration during vacuum.
PRESSURE
Generally using 50-70psi works best whenusing pressure without utilising vacuumfirst. It is important to add pressuregradually when using silicone moulds.Putting the pressure on too fast will veryoften distort the mould. When usingpressure it is important to taketemperature into consideration. Thetemperature in most pressure tanks is lessthan 25°C and will often cause thematerial to cure slowly or to inhibit athrough cure, especially if cast in a thinsection. We try to recommend that theclient utilise a heater band on the pressurevessel when possible.
CURING
The flexible water clear products can becured with elevated heat for a fasterdemould times. However, heat curing hasproved to compromise the finishedphysical properties – mainly tear strengthand elongation. Slightly elevatedtemperatures (26-30°C) will assist ingiving thin section a “kick” for curing butany addition temperature would bedetrimental to the finished properties.
POLISHING
Everyone has their own method and whatworks for one person doesn’t always workfor another... This is what works for BJBEnterprises:
• Wet sand the part with 600, 1500, then2000 grit wet/dry paper.
• Buff the part with Schlegel #1 buffingpad and 3M Perfect-it rubbingcompound #05973
• Finish with Schlegel #2 pad and 3MPerfect-it foam polishing glaze #05996
TROUBLE SHOOTING TIPS
Surface is Tacky:
• Did the part see adequate amount oftime in the mould?
• Was a tin based silicone mould used?• Were thin walls (3mm or less) given a
“heat boost”?
Part is Foggy:
• Was it cast cold (under 25°C)?• Was a suspicious release agent utilised?• Was another material cast into the mould
before the WC?Shrinkage:• Was the part cast in a two-part mould
with risers?• Was part mass cast without risers?
Part Shatters from Mould:
• Was the mould cold when the part wascast?
• Was the material preconditioned(warmed)?
• Was the part left in for full-recommendedtime before demoulding?
> Optimal results occur when the materialis processed and postcured as statedon the technical data sheet, especiallywhen the cast is done in a thin wallsection.
> Casts done 3mm or less will requireslight temperature increase to promoteinternal exotherm.
> Clear casts that come from a mouldlooking “cloudy or hazy” have mostlikely been cast at a lower than ambienttemperature (25°C), have been cast in amould that has not finished curing, orhas been used with a release that wouldcause the cloudiness. Determinetemperature of materials with athermometer, not the thermostat for yourroom!
> Shrinkage will occur with large castparts, even when utilising the longerwork life materials in thicker masses.Closed moulds with feed gates arehighly recommended in theseapplications.
> The WC series of polyurethanes can allbe tinted to translucent colours orpigmented for opacity.

To achieve the best finish possible onwater clear urethanes, a post-cure isrequired regardless of the part size.Follow the instructions provided on thedata sheets for post-curing operations.
The surface condition or your partwill dictate where you are to beginfinishing and will determine the grit ofsandpaper required.
To finish/polish a machined part (milled, saw cut or lathe turned finish), begin withthe finest grit sandpaper possible toproduce a flat surface free of tool lines orsteps. 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper willprovide a good place to start. Utilise ahard, flat acrylic or hardwood block.Rubber blocks or your hand may causeunevenness and will provide a wavysurface on the final polish. Take extra careto maintain an even surface if you areworking with a curved or rounded part, and are hand sanding.
Soak sandpaper in water for 1 to 2 hoursprior to sanding to soften. Add a smallamount of detergent to a spray bottle orbucket with water to lubricate whilesanding (keep the surface wet). Thismixture will avoid loading the sandpaper.
Begin sanding in one direction only untilsurface is flat and uniform in appearancewithout noticeable tooling step lines ordefects. If you find the defects are toodeep and are difficult to remove, youshould switch to a heavier grit sandpaperand proceed until they arecompletely removed.
Continue sanding with finer grits, i.e. 600,800, 1000, 1500, 2000. If you haveobtained a flaw-free surface early on,these steps will go quickly. Rotate 90degrees each time you change grits.Continue to sand across the lastcompleted grit area. This step will assistyou in perceiving the previous lines, and
when they are gone you may move to thenext grit. When you reach the 2000 gritpaper, you should be able to note aslight shine to the surface. This will helpyou determine whether you have removedall flaws. If so, proceed with thepolishing steps.
High-speed buffers tend to work well onmetals but will burn plastics quickly. Lowerspeeds perform better, and the heatbuild-up can be controlled. Finishing witha foam buff pad tends to provide betterresults than with the use of traditionalwool or cotton.
3M products have proven excellent forpolishing urethane. Start with ‘Finesse It’compound in a cup. Apply a light film ontothe part with a brush. Do not allow thesurface to dry out for long while buffing.Continue to re-apply the compound.Monitor the surface temperature – warm is good, hot is not. This step willprovide a high shine on the part. In someinstances, this may be enough of a finishfor your part.
For a higher sheen, utilise a new buffusing 3M’s ‘imperial Hand Glaze’ in thesame manner as the ‘Finesse It’. Thoughnot intended as a machine compound, onthe clear urethane product, it worksbeautifully. Then spray the part with‘Brillianize’ (an anti-static polish/sprayavailable where acrylic products are sold).Hand buff with a polishing cloth or a verysoft flannel towel. Avoid terry clothbecause it may scratch.

The Shore A scale is most commonlyused as a measurement for the more“rubber-like” materials, including mostsilicone RTV materials. (Silicone rubbersgenerally run between 20 and 60 on theShore A scale.)
The Shore D scale will measure harderelastomeric products. Both scalesmeasure hardness on a table from0 to 100.
The higher the measured value, theharder the material. Ratings are alwaysqualified to plus or minus 5 points due tovariations of test results from operator tooperator.
VISCOSITYViscosity is the measurement of a fluid’sinternal resistance to flow. This is normallydesignated in units of centipoise or poise.

THIXOTROPICMaterials reduce their viscosity asagitation or pressure is increased at aconstant rate. Ketchup and mayonnaiseare considered thixotropic materials. Theyappear thick or viscous but actually pumpquite easily.
