2014 will be remembered by many as a year with some of the biggest market increases ever experienced. Although markets and livestock are important, our highest priority is still to the relationships we’ve established with our Red Angus customers. It is a pleasure to work together with all of you to further develop and improve our operations.
Our passion is to provide superior genetics to meet the needs of our customers. We have invested ourselves in some of the best herd sire prospects from across the country and implement a synchronized breeding program in our operation. We are fortunate to own most of the sires represented in this year’s sale.
Technology and EPD’s are valuable tools that aid in genetic selection however it is important not to overlook the basic traits such as disposition, feet, udders, calving ease, and stayability. Performance and weaning weight are essential in the evaluation process. We have utilized performance testing for 35 years.
As always the calves were raised at their mother’s side on native grass with no creep. They were weaned mid-October and are being fed a mixed ration to gain 3 pounds /day. We do not feed for maximum rate of gain. Our common sense feeding program helps to protect the feet and longevity of the bulls.
You will be able to watch our sale and bid online through DVAuction.com. Please be sure to register at least one day or more in advance to ensure enough time to receive account approval. Please see page 3 for more information and step by step instructions.
The bulls and heifers for offer in this sale are exceptional! You are welcome to come and get an early look or call with any questions. Thank you for considering us for your livestock needs. We will do our best to serve you and look forward to seeing you on February 18th!

HerdBuilder Index (HB): An index used to estimate differences in profitability for the sustainability of the cowherd. This index was created on the assumption that an operation raises its own replacement females and terminally markets the remainder of the calf crop on a quality based grid. Given that replacement heifers are retained, primary influence is placed on maternal traits such as Stay, HPG and CE. MARB, YG, and growth EPDs also impact this index, but to a lesser degree. See page 6 for more informa-tion on calculating profitability with this index.
GridMAster (GM): An index used to estimate differences in profitability for those whose primary goal is to maximize profitability in the feedyard and on the rail. This index was created on the assumption that an opera-tion markets all of the calf crop terminally on a quality based grid with no replacement females being raised. MARB, YG and growth EPDs are traits of primary importance in this index. See page 6 for more information on calculating profitability with this index.
Calving Ease Direct (CED): Predicts the probability of calves being born unassisted from two year-old heifers. Selecting on actual birth weight is flawed; it is influenced by non-genetic factors such as nutrition and weather. While the BW EPD removes these non-genetic factors, the CED EPD is the best predictor of calving ease. CED includes variation in BW plus other in-fluential genetic factors such as gestation length, calf shape, etc. The higher the CED EPD, the less calving difficulty.
Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight, and is also used in the calculation of the CED EPD.
Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.
yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.
Milk: Predicts the difference in maternal production of an individual ani-mal’s daughters as expressed by the weaning weight of their calves.
Maintenance Energy (ME): Predicts the differences in maintenance energy requirements of mature daughters of a bull. The lower the ME EPD, the less feed daughters require to maintain body condition. Heifer Pregnancy (HPG): Predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Predicts the probability of a given animal’s daughters calving unassisted at two years of age.
Stayability (STAY): Predicts the probability of a bull’s daughters remain-ing in the herd until at least six years of age. Females that don’t stay in the herd that long are losing money, and they also contribute to higher rate of replacement females that the rancher can’t cash crop.
Marbling (marb): Predicts the differences for carcass marblingscore as expressed in marbling score units. Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades.
Rib Eye Area (REA): Predicts differences of carcass Rib Eye Areabetween the 12th and 13th rib. Increased Rib Eye Area has a beneficial ef-fect on Yield Grade which also includes Carcass Weight and Fat Thickness.
12th Rib Fat Thickness (FAT): Predicts differences for carcass fatdepth over the 12th rib, as expressed in inches. Increases in fat thicknesshas a detrimental effect on Yield Grade.

We purchased Big Horn Z150 for his calving ease, eye appeal, and his parentage. His dam, Feddes Lakina 310, is also dam to Big Sky R9; one of the breed’s highly proven calving ease sires. Sire HXC Conquest 4405P is also one of the breeds all time calving ease sires. His first progeny were definitely easy at birth. We have high expectations for this young herd sire.
Red SSS Twilight 457Z was included in our herd bull battery for his moderate frame, exceptional volume, and capacity. His added performance and fresh pedigree will make him a good consideration for increasing weaning weight.
Feddes Gallatin Z113 is dark cherry red, stands on good feet and legs, and has a quiet disposition. He is easy calving with excellent performance. His EPD profile looks equally as well as his outstanding phenotype.

Anticipation is a Genex sire we used in our AI program. This cherry red son of Ole’s Oscar is known for his performance spread, his high marbling, and his great physical traits. We were impressed with the calves he sired, and we plan to use him more in the future.
Packer is known for his thickness and excellent performance. He is easy calving and his progeny are easy keeping. Feeders appreciate his calves for their muscle and carcass traits.
Right Kind was purchased from Looslie Red Angus in 2012. He is a moderate, easy fleshingheiferbull.Wewereveryexcitedaboutthisnewherdsire, butlosthimduetoan injury in 2013.
Rob Roy has good muscle and body length. We appreciate his friendly disposition and he has proven himself to be very functional and sound. He provided some out-cross genetics for us and his progeny have excellent performance. Co-owned with Leland Red Angus.
Gallatin 4007 is a very complete herd sire prospect sired by Feddes Gallatin Z113. This is the first calf crop for Z113 and he is even more than we expected. His smooth pattern and clean design make 4007 a real eye catcher. His dam is loaded with maternal value like Chateau 744 and Sun King 016. He ranks in the top 20% HB, 11% GM, 21% WW, 18% YW, and 9% Milk. It might be worthwhile to take a close look at this one.
If you need a little more punch in your calf crop consider 4049. His sire, Red SSS Twighlight 457, was a top pick at Triple S in Canada. We appreciate the added performance and excellent weaning weight his progeny possess. 4049 will be an out-tcross for our customers and would be an excellent choice to add pounds on your calf crop. He ranks in the top 10% WW, 10% YW, and 10% ME.
4055 is a powerful herd bull prospect out of a first calf heifer and our new Gallatin herd sire. As his pedigree shows, 4055 has strong genetic merit behind him. Gal-latin sired calves are really catching our eye, and adding a bit more performance that we even anticipated. It’s always nice to get calves that perform well phenotypically as well as on paper. 4055 ranks in the top 6% WW, 8% YW, and 5% CEM. Both his dam and maternal grandam have a 105 MPPA.
Herd bull alert!! 4161 is a thick-topped, sound made bull that is one of the top prospects in the offering. There is a combination of several things that are working in this guy’s favor. Out of the performance oriented Direct Design herd sire, note the 780 Adj. 205, with WW of 65 and YW of 97. And from our experience, his pedigree has great prospect for replacement females. Take a look at the MILK in the top 3% of breed and HPG in the top 4%.

PIE Code Red 199 sires progeny with added length of body with tons of style. His clean front and small head make him a sure shot heifer bull. 4167 is a definite stand out and has a herd bull look. His dam is a high ranking dam in our herd with a 107 MPPA and MGD a 105.
Here is a prospect that will catch your eye in the pen. 4217 is one of the younger calves in the sale, which makes him even more impressive to us. Like his sire Cowboy 26X, he’s got style and added dimen-sion to his muscle. He ranks in the top 3% for WW, 6% YW, 2% ME, has a 116 in herd WW ratio with a 773 Adj. 205. He comes from a strong maternal line as well with both dam and grandam carrying a 106 MPPA.
Lot 10Packer 4006 is a long sided bull that possesses that herd bull look. He is out of a Direct Design female that has a 104 MPPA. We have used Packer for a few years now and his calves continue to perform the way we expect.
4005 has all the same characteristics as his sire Z113. It is easy to spot these bulls in a group. You will have to be the judge. 4005 is a candidate for one of the good ones. The disposition of the Z113 progeny is great.
Dam 45Z was purchased from OHR at the ND Red Select Sale. 4002 has an outstand-ing pedigree and should work on either heifers or cows.
Take a close look at this outstanding prospect. He ranks in the top 25% of the breed in 11 traits. We purchased his dam, VF Anasco Y72, from VF Red Angus in Oregon. She is destined to be one of our top producers and is sired by Right Kind U199. 4001 has tremen-dous thickness and muscle. We appreciate his quiet disposition and easy fleshing ability.

4024 is one of the high ranking calving ease bull candidates of sire, Feddes Big Horn Z150, in the sale. This is the first opportunity anywhere to purchase progeny from this outstanding Conquest 4405P son. Take a look at his spread from birth to weaning.
You may want to give extra consideration to this outstanding prospect. Dam 2012 is sired by our sale topping Mr. King 9002 and already has a 105 MPPA. Take note of his added carcass values ranking in the top 21% GM, 15% REA, and 15% MARB. His weaning ratio is 113 and adj. 205 is 735 lbs. Not bad for her first calf.
Here is a lighter colored Anticipation calf. He ranks in the top 3% for CEM and 14% for GM. A maternal brother sold last year to Tammy and Galen Moody.
4028 is a well-balanced, attractive Hobo son. He has total outcross genetics from our program with solid performance figures. His mother is a Jackhammer daughter with a 106 MPPA.
We have anxiously watched these Big Horn Z150 sons develop. His progeny are easy calving. 4016 has a big top and lots of muscle. MGD has a 112 MPPA.
I challenge you to find better stats than 4040. He has seven traits ranking in the top 20% or less. His adj. 205 is 797 lbs. and had our highest ranking weaning ratio of 123. Take advantage of an opportunity to increase your weaning weights with this outstand-ing prospect.
Right Kind 4034 is a deep ribbed, wide topped, thick made bull. He is a performance prospect ranking in the top 7% WW and 15% for YW. His dam is a Logan bred female that is as deep as she is wide.
4038 is a smooth made Big Horn calf that has the potential to make a great heifer bull. He is out of a Widespread daughter with a 103 MPPA.
4032 is a twin. He got off to a slow start but has really taken off. MGS is Cowboy Cut 26U. Kent Otto
This moderate framed heifer bull prospect is a Packer/Sun King combination. You will really like the way this calf is put together - thick, deep and smooth. His mother, a Sun King daughter with a 104 MPPA, is our daughter Avah’s first cow. With a little help, she picked one right off the top of our females!
Here is a well-designed, clean fronted Cowboy son. He is thick topped, square hipped and has extra length of body. He is out of a Direct King daughter with a beautiful udder. A maternal brother sold to Alex Kraft in last year’s sale.
This Packer son is stout, deep bodied and square hipped. He ranks in the top 7% for REA. You really have to appreciate the muscle in this moderate framed chunk.
This guy is a dark red bull out of 5L Solitaire. He ranks in the top 14% for BW. His mother is one of a select group of bred cows purchased from 5L Ranch in 2013.
Here is one you are not going to want to miss. 4076 is a powerful, big framed Direct Design son. He ranks in the top 2% WW, 8% YW, and 7% MILK. His mother is a productive 9 year old cow that was one of our top picks at the Messmer dispersal sale a few years back. She has a 106 MPPA. We have retained several of her females in our herd. This is her third bull calf produced with an average Adj. 205 of 755 lbs. on those sons. If you are looking for added growth and performance, here is your bull.
Sire Loosli Right Kind 146 was injured and his progeny are limited. Right Kind is well known for his excellent muscle and easy fleshing ability. We really appreciate this pedigree and will offer similar genetics in next year’s sale.
A heifer bull prospect with a 5 CED and -2.2 BW. There are some good maternal bloodlines on the dams side as well.
Maternal brother to Lot 31 that sold in our 2014 production sale to Todd Westby, Ophiem, MT.
Lot 32
PIE Code Red always stamps his progeny with the same stylish characteristics and design for calving ease. We appreciate the consistent low birth weight he produces. 4089 is a top heifer bull candidate. Consider his -5.6 BW EPD.
This dark red bull really shows length and extension from end to end. We are pleased with our first set of Gallatin calves as they seem to be the easy keeping kind. A mater-nal brother sold to Paul Lee in 2014.
The Cowboy sire group has definitely excelled this year. His sons are stylish with excel-lent feet and structure. 4085 has inherited these same characteristics.
Another good Gallatin Z113 son. He consistently sires calving ease in combination with excellent performance.

4097 is a heifer bull candidate. His -3.1 BW and 5 CED along with his smooth design will make him one to consider. His dam produced one of the standouts in 2014 selling to Lazy D Ranch.
This is an extremely long sided Gun Slinger son. His mother is a Chronicle dam that has a 107 MPPA. She has been a very consistent cow that possesses easy fleshing ability.
4090 is a dark red, level made heifer bull. Code Red has been a real consistent herd bull for us and seems to be getting better with age. It will be fun calving our first set of Code Red daughters this coming March.
4091 is a very heavy muscled, square hipped, deep ribbed calf. He is a great combina-tion of Chicawa and Twilight. Take note of his 80 WW, 122 YW, and 737 Adj. 205. He should add some pounds to your calves. A maternal brother sold to Joel Vagts in 2014.
4093 a good looking Direct King 7144 son. You will appreciate this sire group for their consistent high performance and phenotype.

Sun King sires excellent females. They are the right size and have the feminine qualities we are looking for. MGS is Chicawa 366, also a great female maker. 4114 will produce progeny with excellent maternal value.
This is a moderate framed, long sided Cowboy Son. With Chicawa and Summit on his dam’s side, his pedigree and BW indicate heifer bull prospect.
Lot 51Take a look at the tremendous power in 4153, a 787 lb. adj. 205 and a 118 weaning ratio. Notice his muscle and thickness. His dam traces back to the outstanding Feddes Blockana cow family. She claims a 105 MPPA.
This calf is out of Right Kind 146. He is well put together, square hipped and level topped. A maternal brother sold to Otto Red Angus in 2014.

Another good heifer bull prospect out of Code Red 199. We really appreciate the consis-tency and moderate birth weights of his progeny. 4159 also stems back to a popular cow family that we have retained several daughters from.
This is one to notice sale day. His eye appeal and structural design are impressive. Take a look at his high ranking numbers and I think you will agree 4155 is one to consider.
4158 has done well since weaning and is an indication of his easy fleshing ability.

A special thank you to Lloyd Geldenhuys for his help this past year.
He is a definite heifer bull prospect. Notice his -3.2 BW and 6 CED. Dam 7063 has a record of producing lower birth weight.
You will appreciate the overall balance of numbers and also the style of 4179. He stems from the dam to our top selling bull in our 2014 sale selling to OK Cattle Company. Dam has a 105 MPPA and MGD a 108.
4168 is one of the high ranking Sun King progeny in our offering. He ranks in the top 9% HB, 14% GM, 2% WW, 3% YW, 7% Stay, and 2% CW. His weaning ratio is 111. Don’t overlook the maternal value in this pedigree.
Here is another growthy Direct Design son. If you are looking to add some pounds to your calf crop, Direct Design sons are a good way to go. Dam 6053 has been one of those solid producing cows that we can always count on to raise a good calf.
4166 is a Gallatin with a little more stretch than some. He will add some extra frame and the same excellent disposition as other Gallatin progeny.
4162 is a moderate framed heifer bull candidate with a small head and smooth shoulders. His dam is also a moderate frame and has consistently produced low birth weights.
