Blackall races go ahead despite threatening weather

Despite the threat of rain, the first Blackall race meeting for the year was held on Saturday with around 200 people turning out for the event.

Wet weather had the four previous race meetings cancelled with Blackall’s last race day held in July last year.

Six local races were sponsored by Flexafence, Barcoo Butchery, Barcoo Plumbing, Ballard’s Transport, Schluter’s Bakery and Spinks Concreting.

Local horses Audiola, Little Valentine and Picable each came out winners in races throughout the day.

Little Valentine had the first win of the day while Audiola took out the Barcoo Plumbing class 3 plate and Picable was the winner of the maiden plate.

Some of those dressed to impress

were rewarded with the fashions of the field prizes.

Alison Krieg took out the ladies’ fashion of the field prize, University of Queensland medical student Rom Ranasinghe was named best dressed gentleman while Courtney Richardson won the 13-17 years category and Lauren Butler received the under 12 years prize.

Race club secretary Kylie Banks said they were pleased to be able to hold the event after the number of cancelled race meetings in recent months.

“It wasn’t a huge day because of the Tambo Stock Show and the football in Longreach but it was nice to see the day go ahead,” Kylie said.

The next Blackall races are scheduled for July 2.

Audiola and Tinkerman are urged to the finish line by the crowd at the first Blackall race meeting for months last Saturday.

From the Editor

Unsettled weather is making our transition into autumn rather unpredictable, however the weather was kind to events over the past week.

The Queensland Country Women’s Association State President Marian Mudras and State Vice President of the Northern Region Robyn McFarlane were welcomed to Blackall by a good crowd and many new members as well as a wonderful evening of entertainment, food and fun at the CWA Hall.

St Patrick’s Catholic Fete was well attended with most stalls selling all their produce very early in the rather cool and windy evening.

The Barcoo Amateur Turf Club meeting saw good racing with strong numbers fielded in each race in front of a dedicated crowd who were out to have a good day after so many race meetings have been cancelled due to the constant wet weather.

The 37th Tambo Stock Show was well attended with 540 patrons passing through the gate. The children enjoyed the helicopter lolly drop, jumping castle, laser skirmish and mini jeeps, while the parents were able to enjoy the social side of the Show as well as a fashion show, cookery, photography, wool, cattle and horse competitions as well as stalls displaying

wonderful things to buy.The volunteer effort which goes into the

organisation of these events is amazing and requires time, stamina, humour and the important ingredient, community spirit- a great deal of which we have we have in our region.

The annual meeting of The Western Queensland Local Government Association was held in Winton last week with Cr Cripps, CEO Ken Timms and I attending. The agenda was full with many of the

resolutions concerned with mining of minerals and gas. Councils represented were Barcaldine, Blackall Tambo, Boulia, Barcoo, Central Highlands, Diamantina, Flinders, Longreach, Isaacs, Richmond and Winton. Minister for Transport and Main Roads together with the Director General of Transport and Main Roads also attended with the Minister giving an additional 2 million dollars towards roads in the west. State Member for Mt Isa, Betty Keirnan MP also addressed the meeting assuring us of her support should we wish to increase councillor numbers. The Blackall Tambo Regional Council has recently made a submission on this matter to the Deputy Premier Paul Lucas Minister for Local Government.

The Easter break is almost here so I wish everyone a happy, safe holiday with family and friends.

--Jan Ross

The theme for the event was “The President, Her People and their Pearls”

with all guests encouraged to wear pearls for the occasion.

CWA members and community members alike attended the evening held at the Blackall CWA hall.

Blackall CWA president Rebecca Parry introduced Marian Mudras and State Vicepresident, Northern Region Robyn McFarlane, with Mrs Mudras then presenting the new Blackall CWA members with badges.

The World Graphic Design Day exhibition run by Design Hub will be held next week on Wednesday April 27 from 6.30-8.30pm at the Blackall Memorial Hall.

The event is free and will be an opportunity for participants to be involved in hands on workshops, view graphic design work, watch videos, read magazines whilst sipping tea or coffee and even more.

For those interested in graphic design as a career option there will be information provided about courses that can be undertaken.

Business owners can enter in a draw to win a free poster design by Design Hub by placing their business card in an entry box on the night.

Design Hub is also asking Blackall residents to keep packaging from their homes such as biscuit packets, empty tissue boxes and cartons to use in design displays for the event.

Packaging can be dropped off at the Memorial Hall during the day on Wednesday April 27.

In the history of Anzac Day this year is the first time that Easter has coincided with the day.

The influence of this on local support is unknown however it is anticipated that the numbers attending will be swelled by visitors to Blackall over the holiday period.

Earlier this year at the Blackall RSL Sub Branch annual general meeting it was agreed to keep some things the same whilst the decision was taken to make changes in other areas.

The committee was re-appointed unchanged including Terry Brennan as president and Don Daly as the secretary and treasurer.

On the subject of Anzac Day there was discussion on the heat over recent years at the morning service.

It was agreed to bring the timings for the march and subsequent morning ceremony forward to assist with the comfort of those attending the activities.

Over the last few years it has become apparent that by the end of the morning ceremony the temperature has risen to uncomfortable levels affecting everyone but especially the children and even more the senior members of our community.

It was also agreed to shorten the length of the march.

It is hoped that one of the effects of this will be to compact the length of the march and encourage spectators to support the march before moving to the Memorial Park for the ceremony which should enhance the day’s special atmosphere.

A further influence on the revised timings was the special Anzac Day in Tambo this year which will include the dedication of the local community memorial.

The new timings will enable those attending the Blackall morning service who would like to support the Tambo ceremony to travel to Tambo at the conclusion of the Blackall ceremony.

The official guest for the Blackall Anzac Day is mayor Jan Ross, whilst the ceremonies will be supported by the participation of community members and school students.

The march will also include vintage military vehicles.

Readers should refer to the advertisements in this edition of the Barcoo Independent for the new timings and how to order wreaths.

The Easter season was heralded in at the Easter fete held by St Patrick’s Church at Banks Park last Friday night to raise money for the parish.

The cold didn’t deter people from turning out for the event with raffles run throughout the evening and a broad range of food stalls on offer, with some popular food items selling out early in the evening.

Friday night football showed on a big screen with other entertainment including facepainting, novelty items and a cent sale.

The Easter bunny also stopped by at 8pm with a special advance delivery for the children of Blackall.

Fr Matthew Moloney said numbers were down on previous years but that the church was still pleased with the turn out.

“The main aim was to provide a night for the local community to gather and in general we’re very pleased with the results,” he said.

Elizabeth Harvey enjoys the fete with Cindy Harvey, visiting from Injune.

Pilot Officer Sofie Rich, formerly of Blackall, is in France this week as a member of the RAAF burial party conducting a reinterment ceremony for the remains of a pilot killed in World War II.

She and fellow 453 squadron members will also support Australia’s military commitment to Anzac Day ceremonies at Villers-Bretonneaux and tour the Somme region battlefields.

Flight Lieutenant Henry “Lacy” Smith, also a member of 453 squadron, was declared missing, presumed killed when his RAF Spitfire plane crashed in the Orne estuary near Ouistrehain, France on June 11, 1944.

Late last year advice was received from the Office of Australian War Graves that a French team had recovered the aircraft, including human remains, which were later identified as those of Flight Lieutenant Smith.

His formal burial took place at the Ranville war cemetery on April 19, with

tributes and dedications given by federal Veterans Affairs Minister Warren Snowdon and Australian Air Force chief of staff, General Air Marshall Mark Binskin.

Sofie is the daughter of Barry and Helen Rich of Boorara Station near Yalleroi and attended the Blackall State School for three years before the family relocated to Toowoomba and then Wandoan.

She was accepted into the RAAF gap year program when she finished school at the end of 2008, completing the officer’s course before being accepted into an air traffic course.

She graduated from air traffic control last year as joint dux of the course and also received an RAAF values award.

Sofie is now a pilot officer and joint battlefield airspace controller, based in East Sale, Victoria.

Her cousin, aircraftwoman Rebecca Rich, daughter of Harvey and Mary Rich, formerly of Sumnervale, Blackall, is stationed at Canberra.

Rural fire brigade wins equipment

Larry Lewis, Pat and Kerry Bredhauer, Scott Bredhauer with Joe Walker from Reliance Petroleum at the presentation of the new water tank.

The Blackwater Rural Fire Brigade has a new weapon in the fight against bushfires after winning a new water tank, which was presented at the Tambo Stock Show.

The 540 litre water tank is the prize from a competition run by Reliance Petroleum and has foam proportioning technology which allows the water to last three to four times longer, requiring fewer refills.

The tank will be kept at Acton, the property of Blackwater fire warden Pat Bredhauer and rests on a stand provided by the Commissioner of the Fire Service.

The Blackwater Rural Fire Brigade encompasses properties southwest of Blackall including Bully Court, Amaroo, Listowel Downs and Wellclose.

Barcaldine Fire Brigade area controller Larry Lewis said the new equipment would greatly assist the rural brigade in controlling fires.

“I encourage people to use the equipment without abusing it,” Larry said.

The workshop program for the upcoming Shockwave festival has been announced with a range of visiting artists stepping up for the event.

Festival organisers have faced challenges with a shortage of funds this year, but these difficulties are balanced by an influx of support from organisations and individual artists donating both time and resources to make the festival happen.

This year’s pre-festival program boasts a range of workshops by new and existing arts workers, with the likes of Melly Neotakis (photography and documentation), Duncan Maurice (visual arts and site design), Johanna Searles (theatre and performance), Melinda Wells (music), and Sue Loveday (visual arts).

Workshops will be run at the Blackall Memorial Hall from May 28 – June 3 in preparation for the festival.

Shockwave itself will also host workshops with Brisbane creatives - DJ Nic C, hip hop artist Candy Bowers, sound producer Andrei Maberley, hip hop dancer Bekky Carter, designer and stencil artist Tom Everingham, and post-it note

prose writer Alex McCullum.New to the Festival and the

Program, Volt Studio designer Tom Everingham said he was impressed with the relationship organizing body Human Ventures has with the Blackall community.

“It’s great that young people have resources like the Creative Pathways program and Shockwave and I want to be part of this fantastic program. That’s why I’ve decided to donate my time & skills to this year’s festival,” Tom said.

Faced by funding shortages for this year’s festival, Creative Pathways Program Coordinator Brooke Newall took to the net to source alternative funding starting a campaign on Pozible – an online crowd-funding platform.

Although the campaign did not reach its fundraising goal it served to advocate for the needs of the festival.

In addition to the participating artists, the festival is being supported by the Queensland Arts Council, Volt Design, Youth Arts Queensland, The Edge and the State Library of Queensland.

Two Blackall men have been charged over a large haul of cannabis seized during a raid in a forest northwest of Brisbane.

560 cannabis plants were discovered in the Mount Glorious State Forest 40km northwest of Brisbane during a six month long operation code-named Operation Chazz, targeting cannabis production.

The plants have an estimated street value of $1.68 million.

The two Blackall men aged 47 and 59 were charged over the matter on Monday and are

scheduled to appear in the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on separate dates.

The 47-year-old man was charged with one count each of producing a dangerous drug and possession of materials used in the commission of a crime and is due to appear in the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on May 3.

The 59-year-old man was also charged with one count of producing a dangerous drug and possession of materials used in the commission of a crime and is due to appear in the Pine Rivers

Magistrates Court on May 12.Detective Sergeant Michael

Manago, from Ferny Grove CIB said the operation should serve to deter those manufacturing or supplying drugs.

“This result should serve as a warning to criminals that police will not tolerate the manufacture, supply or use of illicit drugs,” Detective Sergeant Manago said.

“Countless lives would have been affected by this seizure had it reached the streets of Queensland.”

Tambo residents must be scratching their heads over a Blackall-Tambo Regional Council decision to ask for a single undivided electorate at local government elections in March 2012.

The recommendation was in council’s submission to the Department of Local Government’s inquiry into council elections, made after community consultation in March.

A report to council about its consultation found 83 percent of Tambo residents (55 of the 66 who responded) were in favour of an electorate divided into wards.

In Blackall 41 percent (56 of the 96 respondents) also approved of the ward system.

However council recommended an undivided electorate, saying “the community would be best served with each voter providing their selection for the entire council nominee”.

It did acknowledge the “strong

response” from Tambo residents wanting to keep wards.

“Council has given careful consideration of the community’s views and thoroughly debated the merits of the various options. As a result of this rigorous process Council has come to a unanimous decision,” the report said.

“The change of divisions will assist the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council continue progressing towards its corporate and community goals of removing any division between the two communities.”

Chief executive officer, Ken Timms said both the former Blackall and Tambo Shire Councils had been undivided.

“It gives electors the opportunity to vote for all representatives which make up a team as all councillors make the ultimate decision, not one,” he said.

Council also requested an additional two councillors, an idea supported by residents in both

Blackall and Tambo.Tambo was 96 percent in favour

of extra councillors and in Blackall the support was 54 percent.

Mr Timms said six councillors would allow more debate over issues in the chamber and also reduce the times when issues have had be deferred for lack of councillors.

The consultation was done at two public meetings in both Blackall and Tambo as well as a phone survey of randomly selected residents.

Mr Timms said he felt the recommended changes would be beneficial to the region and was hoping for a positive outcome prior to the 2012 council elections.

The final decision on whether to agree to council’s recommendations lies with the state government.

Blackall-Tambo opt for a single council electorate and two more representatives

New agent denied selling space at saleyardsTHE Blackall-Tambo Regional

Council has found itself in the centre of a heated negotiation between members of the Blackall Livestock Agents Association (BLAA) and new business Barron Agencies.

Barron Agencies has approached both BLAA and the council in order to get space at the Blackall saleyards to sell cattle.

Yet, the four agencies making up BLAA – Elders, Ray White Rural, GDL and Landmark – are not convinced that Barron would be an asset to the saleyards, one of Queensland’s best performing.

BLAA has an agreement with the council allowing them access to the yards from 6am Wednesday to 7pm Friday each week.

Barron Agencies applied to become member of BLAA but had their membership rejected after receiving support from Landmark but being unable to find a seconder out of the other three agents.

Both Paul and Jeremy Barron as well as a representative from BLAA met separately with councillors in

early April to explain their point of view.

“Barron approached us at the end of last year for a selling position at the saleyards and we’ve since received solicitor’s letters demanding their acceptance into the yards,” the BLAA representative said.

“We’ve had meetings with Barron recently which were very vocal and their application was refused because of their attempt to try and bully themselves into the yards.

“The current four agents work well together and so when we’re looking for another agent, we’re looking for a business partner.

“BLAA’s opinion is that there is no way they can work with Barron and it has the potential to cause disharmony at the yards.

“It could cause a rift between the agents and you could also get undesirable (poorer quality) cattle turning up at the yards.”

Councillor Peter Skewes said one of the main reasons the Blackall sale had become successful was because the four existing agents

had worked so well together.“They (Barron) have to prove they

can work well with the existing agents,” he said.

Councillor Graham Jarvis said he was concerned about the reason why Barron could not get a seconder to support their application.

Council resolved that it couldn’t agree to Barron Agencies’ request to operate a second sale on Thursdays, and recommended that if they can’t get a seconder to sell with BLAA, that they use a commission agent.

Chief executive officer Ken Timms said that the Blackall saleyards are not big enough to run two sales on the one day.

“It’s not logistically possible with moving cattle and all the arrangements involved in running a sale,” Ken said.

“BLAA has its own rules and they have rejected Barron Agencies’ application to join the group.
