A LIFE TIME OF MOURNING

ANNOUNCING

THE DEATH OF MADAM DEMOCRACY

Each year we stop to remember over 102,000 fine Australian men and women gave their lives in defence of the democratic rights of all Australians.

Foreign enemies tried but failed to destroy our democracy which is the basic fundamental right of our freedom.

However, the enemies of democracy from within Australia succeeded on the 17th April 2007 with the announcement of

FORCED AMALGAMATION. QLD LABOR SUCCEEDED

WHERE FOREIGN ENEMIES HAD FAILEDRememberThe Real ENEMY

On the 21st March, REMOVE the WRECKERS OF DEMOCRACY.

The Blackall State School is introducing Agricultural Science to the senior phase curriculum for the first time. Over the course of two years, students in year 11 and year 12 will have the opportunity to study pasture development, the beef industry, native plant production, apiculture, poultry, small crops, the sheep industry and alternative production systems. Students in year 10 will study an introductory course to give them a taste before they choose their subjects for year 11.

The school has been overwhelmed with interest from community members putting their hands up to get involved. Staff and students send out a big thank you to Ian and Kerry Walker of Ravensbourne who have generously supplied the school with two steers for the beef industry unit. Another big thank you goes to Les and Christine Williams of the Coolibah Motel who have kindly offered the use of their vegetable plot for the small crops unit.

The school has also had generous donations of sheep and lambs from Bill Kreig, Reynold Noble and

Bruce Alexander.Allison Diezmann said that “it

would not have been possible without Ken Timms and the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council who have supplied the school with the use of a paddock as well as the fencing expertise of Allan Lawrence”.

The community will be able to view the successes of the Agriculture class at the Blackall Show where students will be running a baby animal nursery. Anyone who would like to get involved or offer advice is encouraged to contact the school.

A 27 year old former Blackall resident, Ann Maris recently pleaded guilty in the Emerald District Court to a number of fraud matters committed between June and October 2005, while she was an employee of Reliance Petroleum in Blackall.

She was charged with over 70 counts of stealing as a servant, making false entries in records and fraudulently falsifying records to steal $19 828 from her employer.

She was arrested in Emerald by officers of the Stock and Rural Crime Squad from Longreach after an investigation which began in February 2006.

The full amount was repaid and she pleaded guilty to all charges. She was convicted and sentenced to two years jail, which was wholly suspended.

continued from page 1Members say the project also

has importance as a springboard for central western producers to learn about new technology in general.

“The electronic drafting and weighing technology is also being used and adopted in the cattle industry and this project will support that uptake,” Bill said.

Blackall Bestprac member Jack Banks said the award was a good reward for the dedication put in by members to improving their industry, and recognition for what’s been done over a number of years.

G’day. What a busy couple of weeks it has been in Blackall. Have you all been as busy as me? My poor feet feel like they could do with a holiday, I’ve been running here and there with no time to spare. Thank goodness it is only 3 more weeks until Easter, boy I am really looking forward to that. I think I might spend the whole holidays

with my feet up on a stump somewhere. So don’t be surprised if you see me behind the school with my sore swollen claws comfortably balancing on the old black stump. Sounds like heaven to me. Eddie

for being very enthusiastic about all that he is learning. He is listening well and trying his best with all his work. 2/3 Mason Spinks has improved in all areas in leaps and bounds in the last three weeks! He has tried to make the right choices, is listening beautifully in class and trying to work independently. 4/5 Kye Peacock has demonstrated willingness to help others. The principals award went to Annabelle Allpass in recognition of the bravery and persistence she displayed on the abseiling activity at camp.

Last week year 6/7 went to Fairbairn Dam at Emerald for leadership camp. In Emerald they went to see the movie ‘Hotel for dogs’, the Botanical Gardens, the skate park and had dinner at McDonalds. Throughout the camp, the students participated in a range of activities including rock climbing, team challenges, abseiling, canoeing and catapult-making. Canoeing and abseiling were the favoured activities because they were fun but also challenging.

Prep/Year one have settled into their class routines and are loving learning. Mrs V and Miss Suthers are very impressed, particularly with the year ones with their sight words. The preps have been working on their matching, memory and direction-following skills. They enjoy the ‘mystery objects tray’ activity.

***The next general meeting will be held on Tuesday,

April 21 at 5.15pm.***

A representative from CARITAS visited St Joseph’s last week. CARITAS Australia is focused on promoting sustainable development so communities can help themselves out of poverty, responding to emergencies

by providing shelter, nutrition and health care, and working to change the structures which perpetuate poverty. The representative spoke with the students about what the money they raise is put towards. Although the money raised may not seem like much, to poverty-stricken communities it means a lot. She presented two year seven leaders with a CARITAS T-shirt as thanks for the school’s contribution.

Blackall racing identity, Dick Banks was thanked and congratulated by the western Queensland racing fraternity and the wider community at the Nissan Central West Industry Excellence Awards on Saturday night.

His 50 years of commitment to the racing industry was acknowledged with the presentation of the outstanding contribution and achievement in racing award.

Gary Peoples told the 400 people at the gala dinner that to support any sport for 50 years was a high achievement, but Dick had also undertaken an active voluntary administrator’s role for 45 years, to make a difference for all in the industry in the west.

Dick said it had been very unexpected but he took it as recognition of all the people on committees who work hard for little acknowledgement.

“I think it’s great that racing is recognised as an important industry in the outback, by being part of this gala event,” he said.

“The prize money from races really does help stimulate part time employment in outback towns, is good for produce merchants, and is an important part of the social fabric of the west.

“I also think the RAPAD awards in general are a great stimulus for business in the area, and recognition of those in the community who are our achievers.”

Dick began his association with the Barcoo Amateur Race Club in 1963 as a committee member and has been an active member since then, making him the longest serving living member of the club.

He was president of the Blackall club from 1970 to 1973. In 1974 he was elected to the Central West Queensland Racing Association and served on this regional board until 2003, taking on the chairmanship of it from 1989 to 2003.

One of his major achievements in this time was the creation of the Matilda Highway race series, the feature race day for central western clubs for a number of years, which saw a large injection of prize money into the racing circuit.

In 1991, Dick was appointed to the board of the Queensland TAB by the Governor, through the Minister for Racing, and he served

on that board until 1998.He has also enjoyed

major success as an owner and breeder of race horses, beginning his association with a horse called Radstock, which won several Flying Handicaps in Brisbane and ran second in two Doomben Ten Thousand races.

A number of his horses won over 20 races, including Tapuna, Fine James, Aloura, Just Hunting, Gone Hunting and Come Hunting.

“I’m told the latter won over 50 races which I’m sure must be some type of record,” Gary told the audience.

“All of these horses were bred on his property and their breeding can be traced back for 100 years,” he added.

Probably the best known of Dick’s horses is Miss Petty, who created an Australian racing record by winning 22 consecutive races.

“He has given so much voluntary time to improve the country racing industry for all of us to enjoy,” Gary finished.

Last year the outstanding contribution and achievement in racing award went to another Blackall identity, Charlie Prow.

David Rewald jockey of the yearIn addition to the award for Dick

Banks, Blackall’s David Rewald was announced as the Central West’s jockey of the year at the industry excellence awards night.

His 2008 list of 28 winners from 107 rides, a strike rate of one winner every four rides, is one that every jockey in Australia would be envious of. His efforts last year included riding four winners in the five race program at Blackall in May.

Originally from Taroom, David has been in Blackall for the last 18 months and has linked up with veteran trainer Charlie Prow.

Todd Austin, who was born and raised in Blackall and began his career in the racing industry as an apprentice jockey indentured to his father Ken Austin, was the Central West’s trainer of the year.

He has claimed this title five times in the last six years.

Based at Barcaldine, he also has a strike rate of winners to runners that would be high anywhere in Australia, saddling up 171 horses for 28 winners in the region last year, a win record of 16 per cent.

Todd and wife Toni travelled thousands of kilometres, to Brisbane, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, Charters Towers, Richmond, Roma, Emerald, Quilpie, Birdsville, Bedourie and Betoota, and most places in between with their team of 25 to 30 horses.

“For racing to survive in country Queensland, we need young people to become involved,” Gary Peoples said.

“Todd and his wife Toni have played a major role due to their big stable, in the ongoing future of racing in the bush.

“The astounding amount of travel that these two young people do shows their commitment to Queensland country racing.”

Innarto, owned by Barry and Julie Eggerling of Longreach, was announced as the horse of the year.

Costumes a highlight of rocky horror trivia nightLast Sunday night, the Blackall Cultural Centre

became the place for ghosts, bats, blood and pulsing hearts. The Blackall State School P&C rocky horror trivia night fundraiser was hosted by Alison Mobbs. Jason Smith filled the shoes of Quizmaster, Avril Fraser and Colleen Morrison made up the official judging panel and Les Williams, the current P&C president, judged the best dressed.

The night was full of entertainment, particularly the variety in costumes. There were prizes for the best rocky horror costumes. Shane and Gillian Robinson were the costume highlight for the night, taking out ‘most daring couple’. Greg and Glenda Tierney were also highly commended for their efforts. Graham Schluter was the winner of the best dressed male, while Lisa Goodman as the devil was deserving of best female. Alison Mobbs had the best fake hair, while Christine Williams had the best natural hair. The table ‘Naga’ won the prize for ‘too dressed up and nowhere to go’.

Bold participants were invited to step forward to compete for the best witch’s cackle which was won by Wes Waugh. Deanne Richardson and Tina Loveday won the dance off doing a lively version of the ‘Time Warp’.

The trivia included questions about the history of Blackall, the origins of Skippy the kangaroo, the date August 31, 1997, names of songs and the first Australian Olympic gold medallist. Ashley Loveday successfully managed the auctioneering throughout the night. The visiting team from Barcaldine closely pipped the “Wet Blankets” so a rematch is set.

“We were really pleased with the strong show of support from the Blackall community toward the trivia night and our children”, said organiser Alison Mobbs.

The final figure is yet to be confirmed, however

initial calculations indicate that between $4,000 and $5,000 was raised on the night. This is to go toward seeking a matching grant to upgrade the children’s playground with a softfall.

A huge thank you from the P&C goes out to the many contributing sponsors.

For a number of years, families in Blackall have struggled to balance work commitments with suitable care for their children. A small group of people have recognised that the needs of children in Blackall are not being met with the current early childhood facilities on offer at the Blackall Kindy and limited-hours daycare. Mardi Noonan along with Alison Evans and the Kindy committee have started to look at some changes that could be made to offer long-hours daycare to the community.

“We have arrived at the stage where we are in need of support from other interested parties to form a steering committee to make the project a success”, Mardi Noonan said.

The group is holding a meeting at the State School library on Tuesday, March 24 at 6pm. They are hoping for a good turn up to discuss their plans. All interested individuals are encouraged to attend.
