When the old town became overpopulated in the mid-19th century, the city expanded inland, north of Plaça Catalunya. The streets of the new suburb, called L'Eixample, or "The Extension", were laid out in a

grid pattern. As Barcelona expanded further north, more new neighborhoods

were built. Villages disappeared within the city boundaries and new districts like the charming Gràcia, Les Corts, Sarrià and Hortà-

Guinardò appeared up in the hills.It was begun in 1298 on the site of an old Roman building, of which a

few stone reliefs are still preserved at the northeast doorway. By 1448 it was completed except for the main facade and the dome,

which were added in 1898 and 1913. The layout of the Barcelona’s cathedral is rather unusual: the apse and altar area lie to the

southeast whilst the main facade faces northwest.*Spanish is the national language of Spain.
