2016 BAR EXAM: FEBRUARY 23-24, JULY 26-27The Alabama bar exam is a two–day exam consisting

of the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE).

Day 1: Two 90-minute Multistate Performance Test

(MPT) questions and six Multistate Essay Exam

(MEE) questions.

Day 2: Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), a 200-question,

multiple-choice exam.

MPRE

A scaled score of 75 on the MPRE is required for

admission. Alabama accepts score if not more

than 12 months prior to or 25 months following

the Alabama bar exam.

FILING DEADLINES AND FEESApplicant must file both a law student

registration and a bar exam application.

Law student registration filing fees are: free if filed

within the first 60 days of law school, $50 if filed after

60 days but within 180 days, $100 if filed after 180

days but within 390 days, $250 if filed after 390 days.

Bar exam application must be filed by October 1 for

the February exam and by February 1 for the July

exam. First time takers who are Alabama residents

pay $575. Non-resident, applicants who have

previously applied, foreign-educated or foreign-

licensed and UBE Score Transfer applicants pay

$575. Reciprocity applicants pay $875.

GRADING AND RESULTSThe total score required to pass the Alabama bar

exam is 260 (out of a possible 400 points).

Raw scores on the MEE and the MPT portions of the

UBE shall be weighted with the MEE worth 30% and

the MPT worth 20%. Results are generally released in

late April for the February exam and late September

for the July exam.

RECIPROCITYAdmission on Motion

Eligible attorneys must comply with the requirements

of Rule III of the Rules Governing Admission to the

Alabama state bar.

GRADING AND RESULTSA passing score of 280 is required. The MEE score

and the MPT score are scaled to the MBE, with the

MEE weighted 30% and the MPT weighted 20%.

RECIPROCITYAlaska has an admission without examination rule,

with reciprocity provisions, for attorney applicants.

Applicant must have taken and passed a UBE exam

and engaged in the active practice of law in one or

more states, territories, or D.C. for five of the seven

years immediately preceding the date of application.

The applicant must also have passed the MPRE and

meet other admission requirements.

Late applications may be accepted upon payment

of additional filling fees until November 30 for the

February exam and April 30 for the July exam.

Character report: $300

Fee not applicable to UBE transfer or AOM applicants.

Application for UBE transfer: $675

GRADING AND RESULTSA passing score of 273 is required. The MEE and MPT

scores are scaled to the MBE, with the MBE weighted

50%, the MEE 30%, and the MPT 20%. Results are

released in May for the February exam and October

for the July exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Arizona does not accept the transfer of any MBE

score from an exam taken in another jurisdiction.

Admission on Motion

A member in good standing of a reciprocating state

bar may be admitted on motion if applicant has

engaged in active practice of law for five of seven

years preceding application and is a graduate of an

ABA accredited law school. For complete details

contact the Arizona Committee on Examinations.

Arizona requires a minimum score of 273 to waive

in and also completion of a jurisdiction specific

component. The jurisdictin component consists of an

onlien course on AZ law. The time limit for recirpocity

is 5 years from the date of the exam.

Admission by UBE

Applicants who have earned a UBE score in another

jurisdiction may be eligible for admission to

Arizona by transfer of UBE score. You must achieve a

score of 273 or greater, be a member in good

standing and graduate from an ABA accredited law

school. The Arizona UBE does not include: Community

Property or Arizona Constitutional Law. For complete

GRADING AND RESULTSThe written portion is scaled to the MBE to determine

if the applicant has achieved a passing score.

A total score of 270 or higher is required to pass.

Results are released approximately four weeks after

the exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

A bar examination applicant may retain from the

immediately preceding Arkansas Bar Examination the

applicant’s Multistate Bar Examination scaled score of

135 or more. An applicant may transfer from another

jurisdiction a Multistate Bar Examination scaled score

of 135 or more for use in the immediately succeeding.

Admission on Motion

GRADING AND RESULTSThe MBE score is 35% of the total score and the

essay questions and Performance Tests combine to

account for 65% of the total score. A passing score of

1,440 on a 2,000 point scale is required, based on the

combined scaled scores of the California Performance

Test, the essay questions and the MBE. Results from

the February exam are released in mid-to-late May and

from the July exam, the Friday before Thanksgiving.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

California does not accept an MBE score from an

exam taken in another jurisdiction.

Admission on Motion

California does not provide for admission on motion.

Examination is required of all applicants. Attorneys

who have been licensed in another jurisdiction for

four years may be eligible to sit for the attorney exam

(written exam only).

FILING DEADLINES AND FEES Application forms and applicable fees must be filed

by November 1, 2015 for the February 2016 exam and

April 1 for the July 2016 exam. Late applications are

accepted through December 1 for the February 2016

exam and May 1 for the July 2016 exam. A late fee will

apply to late applications.

Application fee: $710. On-Motion application fee:

$1,800. UBE transfer application fee: $810. Late fee

penalty: $200.

GRADING AND RESULTSTo pass the Colorado bar exam, you must score

276. Results are generally released in May for the

February exam and in October for the July exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Colorado does not accept the transfer of any MBE

score from an exam taken in another jurisdiction.

Admission on Motion

Admission to practice law without taking the bar based

upon admission in a reciprocal jurisdiction and active

practice of law for three of five years immediately

preceding application to Colorado. On Motion

applications may be filed at any time.

UBE Score Transfer

Admission to practice law based upon a UBE score

achieved in another state or territory of the United

States or in the District of Columbia within three years

preceding application for admission to the bar. UBE

scores achieved more than three years but less than

five years preceding application may be combined

with two years of law practice experience immediately

preceding application in order to qualify under this rule.

A UBE score must be at least that required to pass the

Colorado bar based upon standards of performance set

by the Colorado Supreme Court. 

FOREIGN LAW SCHOOL GRADUATESPermission may be requested to sit for the exam

based on a non-U.S. legal education if that applicant’s

law school was an English-speaking common law

country, the applicant is admitted in the country from

which he/she graduated and applicant has practiced

law for five of the preceding seven years. A petition

for determination of eligibility must be filed, along

with payment of $100.

PROFESSIONALISM COURSEColorado requires exam applicants take a course on

Professionalism prior to admission to the bar or within

six months of admission for On Motion admission.

GRADING AND RESULTSA passing score on the Connecticut bar exam is

a scaled 264 out of a possible 400. The MPT is

weighted 20%, the MEE questions are weighted 30%

and the MBE is weighted 50%. Results are generally

released in early May for the February exam and early

October for the July exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Applicant may use a MBE score from one of the three

previous administrations of the bar exam on which

they were successful.

Admission on Motion

Admission without exam if, in addition to other

requirements, an applicant has been lawfully engaged

in the practice of law as the applicant’s principal means

of livelihood for five out of the last ten years in a

reciprocal jurisdiction, and the applicant is a graduate

of an ABA accredited law school.

GRADING AND RESULTSThe MBE is weighted 50% and the MEE and MPT

the essay portion and the MBE portion of the bar

examination is required to achieve a combined scaled

score of 266 to pass the examination. An applicant,

who has achieved a scaled score of 133 or more on

a prior D.C. essay or MBE examination and whose

score transfer has been accepted by the Committee,

is required to achieve a 133 scaled score on the

portion of the examination being taken. Results are

generally released in mid-May for the February exam

and mid-November for the July exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE or D.C. Bar Exam Score.

An applicant may be admitted without exam if

applicant received a scaled MBE score of 133

or higher on an exam upon which applicant was

admitted in another jurisdiction, achieved a scaled

score of 75 or better on MPRE, and has a J.D. or LL.B.

from an ABA accredited law school. An applicant who

received an MBE scaled score of 133 or higher on

a prior MBE (taken within 25 months of the present

exam) may waive in the MBE score and take only

the essay exam. An essay score of 133 will then be

required to pass the D.C. exam.

An applicant who received a scaled essay score of

133 or higher on a prior D.C. Bar Exam (taken within 25

months of the present exam) may waive in the essay

score and take only the MBE. A scaled MBE score of

133 will then be required to pass the D.C. exam.

ADMISSION ON MOTIONAn applicant who has been a member of another

bar and in good standing for five years immediately

preceding application may be admitted without exam.

Bar exam application

Applicant must pay $600 (in addition to the above

registered more than five years prior to applying, the

application fee is $1,000.

Attorney applicants pay graduated fees based on

number of years admitted to bar. Fees range from

$1,600 for those admitted less than one year to

$3,000 for those admitted over 15 years.

GRADING AND RESULTSMBE and Florida essay/multiple-choice scores are

each weighted 50% in order to determine if applicant

has achieved a passing score. An average scaled

score of 136 will be required. If applicant only takes

one part of the exam, then a score of 136 or higher

must be achieved on that part. Results are generally

September for July exam.

Law must be received in the Office of Bar Admissions

by the deadlines published in current Rules Governing

Admission to the Practice of Law eight months prior to

exam. Late applications with late fees are accepted by

deadlines published in the Rules. Fitness Certification

from the Board is a condition precedent to applying

to the Board to take the exam. Deadline is July 1 for

February exam and December 2 for July exam.

Application for Certification of Fitness to

Practice Law:

$400 for filings made prior to the award of first

professional law degree, $600 for filings made

between award of first professional law degree and

within one year thereof, $700 for filings made more

than one year after award of first professional law

degree. $900 for applications for Attorney’s Exam,

Regular filing period is through January 7 for February

GRADING AND RESULTS

Scaled MBE and scaled essay/performance test

scores are combined to determine if applicant has

achieved a passing score of 270. Applicant must

receive MBE scaled score of 115 to have essays

graded. Combined score of 265-269 will result in

re-grading of essays and MPTs prior to the release of

grades. Results are generally released in late May for

February exam and late October for July exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Georgia does not accept an MBE score from an exam

taken in another jurisdiction.

Admission on Motion

May be admitted without exam from states admitting

attorneys from Georgia without exam. Must have

practiced (including teaching law at a law school

approved by the ABA) for at least five of seven

years immediately preceding application. Must meet

educational requirements. See “Rules Governing

Hawaii Legal Ethics Exam

The Hawaii Legal Ethics Examination consists of 15

multiple-choice questions. It was developed by the

Hawaii Board of Examiners and is based on the Hawaii

Rules of Professional Conduct (HRPC). This exam

component is administered on Tuesday morning.

Hawaii allots 30 minutes for this exam component.

Do not confuse the Hawaii Legal Ethics Examination

with the NCBE’s Multistate Professional Responsibility

Examination (MPRE) or the mandatory Hawaii

Professionalism Course conducted by the Hawaii State

Bar Association.

MPRE

A scaled score of 85 on the MPRE within two years

before or within one year after the Hawaii bar exam is

required for admission.

FILING DEADLINES AND FEESApplication must be received by the preceding

November 1 for February exam and the preceding

April 1 for July exam. No late filing allowed.

Exam fee: $500 plus laptop user fee paid to

ExamSoft, and cost of NCBE character report.

GRADING AND RESULTSDay 1 (weighted 1⁄2) and Day 2 scores (weighted 1⁄2) are

combined for overall passing score of 134. The written

score includes performance on a locally developed

multiple-choice component that is weighted 5.5%

and assesses Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct.

Grading policies are determined by the Committee of

Bar Examiners and specific inquiries concerning grading

should be addressed to the Supreme Court Clerk’s

Office. Results are generally released in early May for

February exam and early October for July exam.

for the February exam and mid-September for the July

exam. A minimum score of 280 is required to pass.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Applicants may transfer previous MBE scaled score

from another recognized jurisdiction if taken within

37 months of the date of exam (Board recommends

transferred score be at least scaled score of 140).

Admission on Motion

Attorneys licensed in states that allow Idaho

applicants admission through reciprocity may be

eligible for reciprocity in Idaho. Examination is

required of all other applicants. Attorneys who have

actively practiced three of the five years preceding

application are not required to take MBE.

UBE Score Transfer

An applicant for admission to the Idaho State Bar may

transfer a passing UBE scaled score of 280 or above

from another UBE jurisdiction if the UBE was taken

within the last 37 months.

FILING DEADLINES AND FEESLaw student registration is recommended (not

required) during first year. All applications must be

for more information. Bar exam application must be

filed by September 1 for the February exam and by

February 15 for the July exam at a cost of $500. Late

applications accepted with late fee until December 31

and May 31 respectively.

GRADING AND RESULTSThe essays are worth 40%, the MPT is worth 10%

and the MBE is worth 50%. Illinois uses an integrated

scoring system. You may achieve the minimum

passing score of 266 by any combination of scaled

MBE and written examination scores. February exam

results are generally released six weeks after the

exam. July exam results, 8-10 weeks after the exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Applicants may transfer previous MBE scaled score of

at least 141 from another jurisdiction if from preceding

two exams and applicant passed the bar exam in

jurisdiction where MBE was taken.

Admission on Motion

Persons admitted to practice in a reciprocal

jurisdiction that have been engaged in the active

and continuous practice of law for at least five of

seven years prior to making application and meet the

additional requirements of Rule 705 may be admitted

on motion. Graduates of foreign law schools should

see Rule 715, and legal service lawyers seeking

limited admission should see Rule 717 at www.

ilbaradmissions.org.

In-House Counsel

Persons licensed in other jurisdictions may apply for a

February exam and April 15 for the July exam. Please

note: the Indiana Board of Law Examiners will not

accept applications for the February exam before

October 1 or March 1 for the July bar exam.

GRADING AND RESULTSThe three tests (MPT, Indiana Essay Exam and MBE)

will be weighted as follows: MPT 20%, Indiana Essay

Exam 30%, MBE 50%. The passing score will be a

combined scaled score of 264. The MPT and IEE

raw scores are scaled to the MBE scores using the

standard deviation method. Results are generally

released 75 days after the bar exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Applicant may transfer an MBE score from a

concurrent exam only.

Admission on Motion

May be admitted without exam. Conditional one-year

licenses granted to applicants who have actively

engaged in the practice of law for five of seven

years immediately preceding application and who

intend to practice predominately in Indiana. After fifth

consecutive renewal, admission becomes permanent.

MPRE

A scaled score of 80 on the MPRE must be on file

with the examiners no later than April 1 preceding

the July exam or November 1 preceding the February

exam. Late scores may be allowed upon petition.

MPRE scores are good for three years.

FILING DEADLINES AND FEESApplicant must file both a law student registration,

unless fully admitted in another jurisdiction, and a

bar exam application. Law student registration fee is

$40 by November 1 of the year in which the study of

law commences (late registration fee $150 or $250

depending on the filing date, see web site for details).

These fees are not refundable. Bar exam application

must be filed by November 2 for the February exam

and April 1 for the July Exam ($425). The bar exam

application deadlines cannot be waived and the

fee is not refundable. Application and registration

forms may be downloaded from the Board of Bar

Examiners’ web site.

Admission on motion: $700

House counsel: $200

GRADING AND RESULTSA passing score on the Iowa bar exam is a scaled 266

out of 400. The MPT weighs 20%, the MEE weighs

30% and the MBE weighs 50%.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Applicants may transfer any MBE score they received

in another jurisdiction from one of the last four MBE

administrations immediately preceding the deadline

for filing the Iowa bar application. MBE scores must

be provided to the Office of Professional Regulation

directly from the applicant's former jurisdiction or the

National Conference of Bar Examiners.

Admission on Motion

May be admitted without exam. Must be licensed in

another state or the District of Columbia, have practiced

five of seven of the years immediately preceding

application, be of good moral character and complete

the requisite filings. Iowa no longer requires “intent to

practice law in Iowa” for admission on motion.

MISCELLANEOUSMay take bar exam prior to graduation if degree

was received within 45 days from the first day of

the exam.

July exam, shall be subject to an additional $200

penalty fee.

GRADING AND RESULTSThe passing standard for the bar exam is a grade

of 266 on a single administration of the exam,

determined by averaging the scaled score of all the

parts of the exam. The MEE and MPT scores are

scaled to the MBE, with the MBE weighted 50%, the

MEE 30%, and the MPT 20%.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Applicants may transfer MBE scaled score of 125 or

higher from another jurisdiction if from a concurrent

exam or received within 13 months prior to the current

exam, provided that the applicant passed the entire

exam in one sitting in the transferring jurisdiction.

Admission on Motion

May be admitted without an exam if licensed in

at least one jurisdiction that permits mutuality of

admission without examination for members of the

Kansas Bar, may not have previously failed a written

Kansas Bar Examination, meets the requirements of

Kansas Rules 706 and 707, must have never received

professional discipline nor currently be the subject

of a pending disciplinary investigation in any other

jurisdiction, must be of good moral character and

mentally and emotionally fit to engage in the practice

of law, must have been lawfully engaged in the active

practice of law for five of the seven years immediately

preceding the date of application, has not previously

engaged in the unauthorized practice of law in

Kansas or any other jurisdiction.

MISCELLANEOUSApplicant may take bar exam prior to graduation,

provided that applicant graduates within 30 days

following administration of the bar exam. See: Rule 706

accepted with a late fee. The late deadlines for the

February exam is November 10 with an additional

$200 late fee and December 10 with an additional

$400 late fee. The late deadlines for the July exam

are March 10 with a $200 late fee and May 10 with

GRADING AND RESULTSApplicant must achieve scaled score of 132 on MBE

GRADING AND RESULTSThe score is comprised of 4/11 (36%) from the

MBE score and 7/11 (64%) from the converted score

from Day 1.

A passing score is a scaled score of 138. Results are

released within 75 days after the exam.

RECIPROCITYModified Bar Examinations

An applicant who (i) has been admitted by

examination to practice in one or more jurisdictions

and has been in the active practice of law for at least

three of the preceding five years or (ii) has taken the

MBE within the 61 months prior to the current exam,

may elect to take only the first day of the examination

(see Rule 10 (e)(1) of the Maine Bar Admission Rules).

An applicant qualified under either (i) or (ii) and who

has achieved a usable MBE scaled score may be

admitted on the basis of a further modified written

examination (see Rule 10 (e)(2)). New Hampshire and

The deadline to file an application to use a laptop

computer on the February 2016 Bar is Monday,

December 21, 2015; July 2016 is Friday, May 20,

2016. There is no fee due with the laptop application;

however, a separate $125 laptop registration fee must

be paid closer to the exam. Further details are available

at http://mdcourts.gov/ble/laptoprequirements.html.

GRADING AND RESULTSEach essay exam question is worth six points and the

MPT question is worth nine points, total essay score

is then scaled up to 200 points. The essay exam is

weighted twice as much as the MBE. Thus, the total

scaled score is the essay scaled score multiplied by

two and added to the MBE scaled score. To pass, an

applicant must achieve a total scaled score of 406

out of 600 points. Results are generally released in

early May for February exam and early November for

July exam. To pass the Attorney Exam, a score of at

least 70% of the total point score is required.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Applicants may transfer an MBE score from another

jurisdiction from a concurrent exam only.

Eligibility for Admission by Attorney Examination

Out-of-state attorney applicants are required to take

an essay exam on Maryland Evidence, Maryland

Civil/Criminal Practice and Procedure and Rules of

Professional Conduct. Applicants must have practiced

law as a principal means of support in another

jurisdiction for 10 years, or five of the last 10 years

immediately preceding application, must have been

admitted by exam in another state, and must have

intent to practice in Maryland.

Attorney Exam Application Fee: $700

(plus cost of NCBE character report: $300)

MISCELLANEOUSAll applicants required to complete a course on

legal professionalism offered by the Maryland State

Bar Association under the authority of the Court of

Appeals prior to admission. There is a course fee.

GRADING AND RESULTSA scaled score of 85 on the MPRE prior to the bar

application is required. MBE and essay scores are

combined to determine if a passing score of 270

was achieved. Results are released in early May for

the February exam and November for the July exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Massachusetts accepts actual raw MBE scores from

other jurisdictions, only if from a concurrent exam.

Admission on Motion:

In order to be eligible for admission without taking

the Massachusetts bar exam, the applicant must

have been admitted in another jurisdiction for five of

the last seven years and have engaged in the active

practice or teaching of law since prior admission. The

applicant must also meet education requirements and

have achieved a scaled score of 85 on the MPRE.

GRADING AND RESULTSMBE contains 200 multiple-choice question, 190

of which are scored. Essay examination consists of

15 essay questions with 10 raw points possible for

each question. A combined score of 135 or above is

necessary to pass the exam. Results are generally

released in mid-May for February exam and mid-

November for July exam. 

RECIPROCITYThe process in Michigan is called Admission

Without Examination. Attorneys licensed in another

jurisdiction must have actively practiced law as a

principal occupation or business for three of the past

five years before applying; be a member in good

standing; and intend to practice in Michigan. For

the Board of Law Examiners.

GRADING AND RESULTSA passing score of 260 is required. The exam is

weighted: 20% for the two MPT questions, 30% for

the six MEE essay questions and 50% for the MBE

questions. Results are generally released in mid-April

for February exam and early October for July exam.

RECIPROCITYEligibility for Admission by UBE Score.

An applicant may be eligible for admission without

examination under Rule 4A(4) if the applicant has

received a scaled score of 260 or higher earned in

another jurisdiction on the UBE and the score is certified

as a UBE score by the National Conference of Bar

Examiners. The applicant shall submit evidence of the

score and a complete application for admission to the

Board within 36 months of the date of the qualifying

examination being used as the basis for the admission.

Eligibility for Admission by MBE Score

An applicant may be eligible for admission without

examination under Rule 4A(4) if the applicant has

received a scaled score of 145 or higher on the MBE

taken as a part of and at the same time as the essay

or other part of a written bar examination given

by another jurisdiction, was successful on that bar

examination, and was subsequently admitted in that

jurisdiction. The applicant shall submit evidence of the

score and a completed application to the Board within

24 months of the date of the qualifying examination

being used as the basis for the admission.

MPRE

Currently, a scaled score of 75 on the MPRE is

required for admission. This score must be achieved

within 24 months before or 12 months after passing

the bar exam.

FILING DEADLINES AND FEESApplicant must complete both a law student

registration and application. Law student registration

fees are $100 if filed by October 1 following the

completion of two (2) semesters of law school and

$300 thereafter. If preregistered, application update

must be filed by September 1 for the February

exam and by February 1 preceding the July exam

($825 fee, $525 if preregistered). A $25 online filing

fee will be charged for each filing. Check with The

Board of Bar Admissions for a more detailed bar exam

fee schedule, including late fees for missed deadlines.

GRADING AND RESULTSA passing score on the Mississippi bar exam is 132

on a 200-point scale. The MBE is weighted 40%,

the six state essays are weighted 30%, the MEE is

weighted 15%, and the MPT accounts for 15% of final

score. Results are generally released in mid-April for

February exam and mid-September for July exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Applicant may transfer MBE scaled score if attained

within 20 months prior to Mississippi exam.

Admission on Motion

Must have practiced at least five years in a

reciprocal state.

one year after the date of written notification of

passing the Mi ssouri bar exam.

FILING DEADLINES AND FEESFirst and second year law students may seek an

early character and fitness determination. Otherwise,

the Application for Character and Fitness Report

and Application for Bar Examination must be filed

concurrently. Bar exam application must be filed by

October 1 for February exam and by March 1 for July

exam. Late filing with additional fee allowed until

December 31 and May 31, respectively. Fees range from

GRADING AND RESULTSA scaled total score of at least 260 out of 400 is

required. The MBE is weighted 50%, the MEE is 30%,

and the MPTs 20%.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Applicants may transfer any MBE scaled score from

another jurisdiction provided: the applicant has not

previously failed the Missouri bar exam, the transferred

MBE score was attained within the 19 months preceding

the Missouri exam, applicant passed the entire bar exam

in one administration in the transferring jurisdiction.

Applicants may use a transferred MBE score only one

time. Acceptance of MBE score does not create a UBE

score for future licensing in other UBE states.

Acceptance of UBE Score

Applicants may transfer a UBE score of 260 or higher

earned within the twenty-four months preceding the

date of the application.

Admission on Motion

Admission without exam possible if applicant has for

five of the last 10 years engaged in the full-time practice

of law primarily at or from an office physically located in

a jurisdiction in which the applicant was licensed. Must

also hold an active license in a jurisdiction that admits

Missouri attorneys without exam. Applicant must be a

graduate of an ABA accredited law school and cannot

have failed the Missouri Bar Exam within the preceding

seven years. See Missouri Supreme Court Rule 8.10.

MISCELLANEOUSApplicant must have completed all requirements for

J.D. degree by July 1 or February 1 in order to sit for

the exam. Degree must be conferred before results

will be released. Missouri Educational Component Test

("MECT") is a mandatory 30-question, open-book test

for all applicants. Applicants must complete this and

mail in the Certificate of Completion no earlier than the

date of submission of the initial application and no later

than one year after passing the bar examination.

A scaled score of 85 on the MPRE is required for

admission. The score must be achieved no more than

five years after release of passing score.

FILING DEADLINES AND FEESApplications must be filed between September 1 and

November 1 for the February exam and between

February 1 and April 1 for the July exam. Late fee

of $150 no more than 30 days past filing deadline.

The application fee is $490 (or $590 without a

passing MPRE score. If an exam application does not

include a passing MPRE score, $100 must be paid

by bank cashiers check or money order with paper

applications submitted on or before the designated

deadline). Motion application fee is $925.

GRADING AND RESULTSThe passing standard for the bar exam is a grade

of 270 on a single administration of the exam,

determined by averaging the scaled score of all the

parts of the exam. The MEE and MPT scores are

scaled to the MBE, with the MBE weighted 50%, the

MEE 30% and the MPT 20%.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE score and transfer of

UBE Score

Nebraska does not accept the transfer of MBE scores

obtained in other states. Nebraska accepts as passing

a UBE score of 270 – or greater--for up to five years

after the passing score has been achieved.

Admission on Motion

Nebraska provides reciprocity to applicants who are

in good standing and have either previously passed

an examination equivalent (meaning MBE, MPRE

and MEE) to the exam administered in the state of

Nebraska or who have been licensed and are active

and in good standing for five of the past seven years.

GRADING AND RESULTSMBE (weighted 1⁄3) and written scores (weighted 2⁄3)

are combined for an overall passing score. In order to

pass, an applicant must have a total scaled score of

75 or higher and a converted score of 75 or higher on

at least three written questions. This equates to 140

on a 200-point scale. Results are generally released

in early May for the February exam and early October

for the July exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Nevada does not accept an MBE score from an exam

New Hampshire accepts motions for admission by

transferred UBE score. An applicant who takes the

UBE in any UBE jurisdiction may transfer his or her

UBE scores to another UBE jurisdiction.

Admission on Motion without Examination

Lawyers who have: 1) been admitted by bar exam to

practice in one or more jurisdictions, 2) graduated

from an ABA approved school, 3) been primarily

engaged in the practice of law for five of the seven

years preceding the Motion for Admission, and 4)

achieved a satisfactory MPRE score prior to the

Motion for Admission, may be admitted to the New

Hampshire Bar on motion without examination.

There are special rules for Admission by Motion by

VT and ME attorneys who have passed the VT/ME

bar and are engaged in the active practice in VT/ME

for no less than three years prior to the filing of the

Motion. (See Supreme Court Rule 42). Check with

provided the sending jurisdiction agrees to forward

your MBE score to New Mexico upon receipt of the

score from the ACT so that your NM results are not

delayed. The Board does not accept a score from

a previously administered exam, regardless of the

score achieved.

Admission on Motion

An examination is required of all applicants. Effective

June 1, 2015 – New Mexico will accept admittance by

motion for attorneys who have 1) graduated from an

accredited law school, 2) have practiced 4 out of 6

years immediately preceeding motion for admittance,

3) are in good moral standing, 4) are in good standing

in other states where admitted to practice, and 5) is

professionally qualified for admittance in New Mexico.

GRADING AND RESULTSThe passing score for the UBE in New York is 266.

An applicant must achieve a score of 266 or higher

regardless of UBE jurisdiction in order to qualify for

admission in New York.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of UBE Score: Beginning October 1,

2016, applicant may transfer their UBE score from

February 2014 and later as long as applicant has taken

the NYLC and NYLE. The fee to transfer one’s score is

$250 ($750 for foreign trained applicants).

Admission on Motion: May be admitted without exam

from states admitting attorneys from New York without

exam. Must have practiced five of the last seven years

and be a graduate of an ABA accredited law school.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTSIn addition, applicants must complete the New York

Law Course (NYLC) and New York Law Exam (NYLE).

The NYLC is an online course in New York-specific law

with questions built into it. The NYLE will be a 50 item

multiple choice test, offered at least four times per

year beginning Spring 2016. Applicants can take the

NYLC and NYLE up to one year before or three years

after sitting for the UBE, subject to the application

filing deadline of the Court of Appeals (requires filing

within 3 years from the date when the applicant sits for

the UBE). Applicants must complete the NYLC before

they can take the NYLE. The NYLE will be an open

book test. An applicant who fails the NYLE will be

required to retake both the NYLC and the NYLE.

PRO BONO HOURS

bono requirement.

FILING DEADLINES AND FEESApplications must be filed by the first Tuesday in

Tuesday in January for the July exam. Fees are

$700 if not a licensed attorney, $1,500 if current or

former licensed attorney. Late filing deadlines are

first Tuesday in November for the February exam

and first Tuesday in March for the July exam

(late filing fee is an additional $250). Contact bar

GRADING AND RESULTSThe MBE (weighted 40%) and the essay (weighted

60%) scores are combined to determine if applicant

has achieved a passing score of 350. Results are

generally released in late March for February exam

and late August for July exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

North Carolina does not accept an MBE score from an

exam taken in another jurisdiction.

Admission on Motion

An attorney may be admitted without exam from

states admitting attorneys from North Carolina

without exam. Application must be on file with the

board no less than six months prior to consideration

of application. Applicant must have actively practiced

law four of six years immediately preceding the

filing of the application and have passed the MPRE.

FILING DEADLINES AND FEESRegistration of law students is required. A law student

registration application must be filed by October 1 of

the student’s second year of law school or within 14

months after the student’s first day of the first year of

law school. Applications filed after these deadlines

shall be permitted upon payment of a late law student

registration filing fee, however the law student

registration application is appropriate only up until

January 1 of the third year of law school. If later, you

must refer to the bar exam application. Applications

for the February exam are dependent on 10 or more

applicants. Administration of the February exam is

dependent on ten or more applicants. Applications

for the February exam must be postmarked by

November 1 prior to the February exam for which

application is made. Applications postmarked later

than November 1, but by December 1 prior to the

February exam for which application is made, shall be

permitted upon payment of a late filing fee.

Fees paid, excluding the investigative fee, will be

refunded only in the event of less than ten applicants.

The investigative fee is not refundable. Fees paid for

the July exam are not refundable.

GRADING AND RESULTSMBE, MEE and MPT scores are combined to

determine if applicant has achieved a passing score.

The three tests are weighed as follows: MBE 50%,

MPT 20%, and MEE 30%. An applicant must earn a

final total scaled score of at least 260 to pass the

examination. Results are generally released seven

weeks after the exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of UBE or MBE Score

Individuals may be eligible to apply for admission

based on: MBE scaled score of 150 or above within

the last two years of the date of the examination in

the jurisdiction of admission, OR UBE scaled score of

260 or above within the last two years of the date of

the examination.

Reciprocity Based on Practice

Individuals may be eligible to apply for admission

based on five years' membership in the bar of

another jurisdiction and engagement in an activity

demonstrating competency in the practice of law for

four of the last five years.

1 for the July exam and November 2 for the February

exam ($358 fee). For admission without examination,

$1,500 plus a fee for NCBE character report.

GRADING AND RESULTSMBE is weighted 1/3 of an examinee’s total score and

the written portion (essays and MPT) is weighted

2/3 of an examinee’s total score. A total score of

405 is required to pass. Results are generally

released in early May for the February exam and late

October for the July exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Ohio does not accept an MBE score from an exam

taken in another jurisdiction.

Admission on Motion

May apply for admission without exam. Must meet

general admission requirements, be a graduate of

an ABA accredited law school, have passed a bar

exam and been admitted in another jurisdiction, have

actively practiced outside of Ohio on a full time basis

for five of last 10 years, intend to actively practice

GRADING AND RESULTSApplicants need a combined minimum scaled score

of 272 to pass the exam. The combined essay and PT

scaled score count as 55% of the total score and the

scaled MBE is 45% of the total. Results are generally

released in mid-April for the February exam and mid-

October for the July exam.

BRIDGE THE GAP PROGRAMNewly admitted lawyers must complete the four-

hour Bridge the Gap program prior to their first CLE

compliance deadline.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Rhode Island does not provide for admission on

motion. Examination is required of all applicants. If

an attorney has practiced five out of the 10 years

immediately preceding application, only the Rhode

Island essay exam, MPT, and MEE portions of the exam

are required. (This format requires a scaled score of

138 to pass.)

MISCELLANEOUSApplicants must complete a one-day "Bridge the

Gap" program offered by the Rhode Island Bar for

admission. Ten CLE credits, including two Ethics

credits, are required. Commencing the second July 1

after the attorney is admitted. Attorneys admitted for

three years or more in another jurisdiction at the time

they are admitted to the RI Bar are exempt from the

Bridge the Gap requirement.

fee varies as shown below:

Filing Fee: $700 for February applications filed

between August 1 to 31, July applications filed

between December 1 to January 10

Filing Fee: $1,050 for February applications filed

between September 1 to 30, July applications filed

between January 11 to 31. Additionally, an applicant

who has been admitted in another state or the

District of Columbia for one year or more must file

one additional copy of the application along with an

additional fee of $800. A portion of this fee will be

used to obtain a character report from the National

Conference of Bar Examiners.

GRADING AND RESULTSThe MBE accounts for one of seven parts of the

exam. The essays account for the remaining six parts.

Applicant must pass six of seven parts to pass entire

exam. The minimum MBE scaled score required is

125. Minimum passing score on the essays is 70.

A scaled MBE score of 110 or less is an automatic

failure. Results are generally released in late April for

February exam and late October for July exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Applicant may transfer MBE scaled score from

concurrent exam only.

Admission on Motion

South Carolina does not provide for admission on

motion. In narrow situations, a special application

may be made by a dean or tenured professor of the

University of South Carolina. Contact the Supreme

FILING DEADLINES AND FEESApplications must be postmarked by November 1 for

February exam and by April 1 for July exam.

Exam fee: $300. An applicant for admission without

examination shall pay a fee of $450. An applicant

shall also pay the cost for a National Conference of

Bar Examiners character report.

GRADING AND RESULTSA general average of 75% or higher on the combined

MPT, MEE, and Indian law portion of the examination

shall be deemed a passing score on that portion of

the examination. A scaled score of 135 or higher shall

be deemed a passing score on the MBE portion of

the examination. Results for the February and July

exams are released 8-10 weeks after

the exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

In its discretion, the Board of Bar Examiners may

accept an applicant's previous scores on the MBE

administered in a jurisdiction other than South Dakota

if taken within two years prior to the next scheduled

examination, if the score on the MBE is a scaled score

of 135 or above and if the applicant passed the entire

bar examination in the other jurisdiction. The Board of

Bar Examiners may accept an applicant’s MPRE score

if taken within twenty-eight months prior to the next

scheduled examination and if the score is a scaled

score of 85 or above.

for 50%.

May be admitted from other states after having

actively practiced in the jurisdiction in which

Acceptance of UBE Score

Applicants may transfer a UBE score of 270 or

higher earned within three years from the date of

application. The minimum score may be transferable

for up to five years if the attorney has been actively

engaged in full-time practice of law since earning the

Admission on Motion

Attorneys who have been actively engaged in

full-time practice of law for five of the last seven

The Board of Bar Examiners has recommended that the

Supreme Court adopt the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE). The Court

has yet to act on the recommendation. If the Court accepts the

recommendation, the earliest the UBE might be administered

in Vermont is July 2016. In February 2016, the Vermont bar

exam will follow current practice and consist of the MBE, two

MPTs and four Vermont essays.

An attorney having been admitted to practice law

in another jurisdiction may apply for admission to

for Virginia lawyers. One of the requirements for

admission on motion is that the applicant has been

engaged in the full-time practice of law for at least

three of the last five years immediately preceding

application for admission to the Virginia Bar.

MILITARY SPOUSE PROVISIONAL ADMISSIONThe dependent spouse of an active duty service

member stationed in the Commonwealth of Virginia,

who has been admitted to practice law before the

court of last resort of any state or territory of the United

States or of the District of Columbia and who meets

all other requirements of Rule 1A:8, may apply to the

Board for Military Spouse Provisional Admission.

The Military Spouse Provisional Admission filing

fee is $400. This fee covers the cost of processing

the Application, investigating matters contained

in the applicant's completed Character & Fitness

Questionnaire, and preparing of the Character Report.

GRADING AND RESULTSThe MEE and MPT scores are scaled to the MBE, with

the MBE weighted 50%, the MEE 30% and the MPT

20%. Washington’s passing score on the UBE is 270.

The passing score on the WLC is 80%.

You may take the WLC any time after filing your

application up until one year after sitting for the UBE.

RECIPROCITYAdmission on Motion

If you have a UBE score of 270 or higher from another

state, you can transfer your score to Washington for

up to 40 months after the date of the administration

of the UBE in which the score was earned. The MPRE

score must be acquired three years before or after

the date you sat for the UBE.

FILING DEADLINES AND FEESApplications should be filed by November 1 for the

final deadline of December 1 for the February exam

and accepted (with late fee of $200) until the final

deadline of May 1 for the July exam.

The bar exam application fee for those admitted less

than one year or not admitted in any jurisdiction is $400.

Attorney application fee: $600

Reciprocity application fee: $1,500

GRADING AND RESULTSAll answers to the MPT and the MEE will be graded

and the scores combined. The total MPT/MEE raw

score will be scaled to the MBE using the standard

deviation method. Results are released approximately

6-8 weeks after the exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score Applicant may transfer

MBE scaled score from a previous successful exam

taken within 13 months of present exam.

Admission on Motion

May be admitted without exam from jurisdictions

with admission standards substantially equivalent to

those of West Virginia. Applicant must have practiced

for five of the seven years immediately preceding

application, passed MPRE and be a graduate of an

ABA accredited law school.

the examination, applicants are required to attend a

mandatory registration.

GRADING AND RESULTSA combined scaled score of 258 is required to pass.

The scaled score may be achieved through any

combination of scores on either portion of the exam

(e.g., 120 scaled essay score + 138 scaled MBE

score = 258). Tentative exam results release dates are

early April for February exam and early September for

July exam.

RECIPROCITYAcceptance of MBE Score

Applicant may transfer MBE scaled score of 135 or

higher achieved on exam taken within 37 months of

present exam and part of successful exam.

Admission on Proof of Practice

The applicant who applies for admission to the

practice of law in Wisconsin must show they have

been substantially engaged in the practice of law

in a state or territory, the federal government or the

District of Columbia for three years within the last five

years prior to filing application for admission. A lawyer

may satisfy this requirement by proof of practice in

more than a single jurisdiction and under more than

one provision of this rule.

MISCELLANEOUSApplicant may take exam prior to graduation if degree

received within 60 days after exam.

MPRE

A passing score on the MPRE is a scaled 85 or

greater. An application will not be considered until the

applicant has submitted evidence of a passing MPRE

score. Such evidence must be submitted within one

year of the date of administration of the examination

on which the applicant obtained a passing UBE score.

FILING DEADLINES AND FEESApplications must be filed by November 15 for the

February exam and by April 15 for the July exam.

No late filing allowed.

Exam Fee: $600 plus the appropriate NCBE character

report fee

GRADING AND RESULTSSuccessful examinees must achieve a scaled score of

270 on a scale of 400. Under UBE standards, the MEE

and MPT scores are scaled to the MBE, with the MBE

RECIPROCITYAdmission on Motion

A member in good standing of a reciprocating state

bar may be admitted on motion if applicant has

engaged in active practice of law for five of seven

years preceding application and is a graduate of

an ABA accredited law school. Applicant must be

compliant with CLE requirements of reciprocal state.
