The Sacrament of Baptism

Page 2: Baptism john

• Baptism is the sacrament that gives our souls the new life of sanctifying grace by which we become Christian, Children of God, and Heirs of heaven.

What is Baptism?

Prefiguration's of Baptism in the Old testament

In the liturgy of the Easter Vigil, during the blessing of the baptismal water, the church solemnly commemorates the great events in salvation history that already prefigured the mystery of Baptism.

Page 7: Baptism john

• Since the beginning of the world, water, so humble and wonderful a creature, has been the source of life and fruitfulness. Sacred Scripture sees it as "overshadowed" by the Spirit of God:

Page 8: Baptism john

All the Old Covenant prefiguration find their fulfillment in Christ Jesus. He begins his public life after having himself baptized by St. John the Baptist in the Jordan.

Baptism in the churchFrom the very day of Pentecost the Church

has celebrated and administered holy Baptism. Indeed St. Peter declares to the crowd astounded by his preaching: "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

Page 10: Baptism john

According to the Apostle Paul, the believer enters through Baptism into communion with Christ's death, is buried with him, and rises with him:

The baptized have "put on Christ." Through the Holy Spirit, Baptism is a bath that purifies, justifies, and sanctifies.

*Baptism has the three essentials of a Sacrament:

It was instituted by Christ It is a sensible sign It confers grace

Page 12: Baptism john

The Sacrament of Baptism was instituted by Christ of His own Baptism and commanded at His Ascension.

“Going therefore make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” (matt. 28:19)

Christ’s BaptismCCC1223

Our Lord voluntarily submitted himself to the baptism of St. John, intended for sinners, in order to fulfill all righteousness.

Page 14: Baptism john

The matter and form of the Sacrament consist in the ablution with water together with the pronouncing of words;

“I baptize thee in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Page 15: Baptism john

The Sacrament of Baptism confers grace. We know this form that the fact that Christ made it the Sacrament of renewal of spirit. “Unless a man be born again of water and the spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.”

What are the effects of Baptism?Washes us from original sin.Imparting sanctifying grace into our souls.

Makes us Christians, Children of God...

Page 17: Baptism john

Baptism is the only Sacrament that can remit original sin. It cleanses us from all sin, original and actual, and remits all punishment due.

Page 18: Baptism john

When Baptism takes away original sin, it gives our souls the new life of sanctifying grace. Thus by Baptism we are born again.

Page 19: Baptism john

By Baptism we become members of the Church and children of God. We are given the right to enter heaven, and to gain merits by our good works.

Page 20: Baptism john

Baptism imprints an indelible sign or character on the soul. This character marks us as Christians,

and cannot be removed by anything, even mortal sin. This character prevents the Sacrament from being repeated: we can be baptized only once. “for all you who have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” (Gal. 3:27)

Page 21: Baptism john

Why is Baptism necessary for the salvation of all men?Baptism is necessary for the salvation of all men because Christ has said: “Unless a man be born again of water and the spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.”

Page 22: Baptism john

Those who through no fault of their own have not received the Sacrament of Baptism can be saved through what is called:

o Baptism of bloodo Baptism of desire

Page 23: Baptism john

Baptism of blood- when he suffers martyrdom for the faith of Christ.

Baptism of desire- when he loves God above all things, and desires to do all that is necessary for his salvation.

Page 24: Baptism john

Christian initiation From the time of the apostles, becoming a

Christian has been accomplished by a journey and initiation in several stages. This journey can be covered rapidly or slowly, but certain essential elements will always have to be present:

How is the Sacrament of Baptism celebrated?

Page 25: Baptism john
