Executive Summary General Nexom is pleased to provide a BioPortz™ Pilot System to examine basis of design for
the proposed full-scale Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) process in Banning, CA.
The Pilot System has been designed to mirror the proposed full-scale MBBR
process. The Pilot System and the proposed full-scale system utilize reliable and robust
biological processes that requires minimal operator intervention to achieve high-quality
effluent. The BioPortz process will upgrade the existing infrastructure into a state-of-the-art
treatment facility capable of meeting discharge requirements in a small footprint.
We will use our extensive project experience from similar projects as the basis for a reliable
and sustainable system design that is cost effective, efficient, and simple to operate.
We look forward to working collaboratively with the Banning operational staff and
the project engineer to implement the BioPortz Pilot and Full-Scale Systems.

1.0 / Process Description BioPortz™ Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor The BioPortzTM Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) is a simple
and efficient biofilm system for BOD, ammonia and nitrate removal.
Biofilms maintain a high quantity of active treatment biomass in a small
footprint. Biofilms are self-maintaining and continuously replace old
biomass with new biomass. Therefore, operator worries are eliminated
since sludge wasting is not required to maintain treatment performance.
BioPortz media are composed of HDPE with carbon black for UV
protection. The media have been designed to provide a high surface
area without compromising substrate mass transfer. Media retention
screens are constructed from stainless steel wedge wire. Media
retention screens are designed to retain media in the basins while
allowing effluent to flow through continuously without interruption.
The BioPortz MBBR reactor is constructed with the following features and benefits:
• Patented media optimized for treatment type – high-rate, low-footprint process
• Sludge recycle is not required – simplest biological process to operate
• Stainless steel wedgewire media screens
• Stainless steel aeration drop pipe
• HDPE coarse bubble diffusers – no fouling, no maintenance
• Aeration grid for optimal mixing / oxygen transfer – energy efficient

2.0 / Pilot Description BioPortz™ Pilot System Nexom has multiple BioPortzTM Pilot Systems that can be mobilized for on-site
piloting. When the pilots are not being used for specific projects, Nexom utilizes them for
internal research and development. By continuously pushing the limit of technology, Nexom
can discern the potential successes and risks for clients and their unique systems.
Nexom’s pilot system can be easily modified for site specific requirements. For Banning,
CA a single train system will be utilized to demonstrate the performance of the
proposed full-scale Aerobic-Aerobic-Anoxic-Aerobic process, as well as to confirm
design loading rates on the actual wastewater. The pilot process will consist of four
tanks in series. The first aerobic tank will serve to oxidize BOD. The second aerobic tank
will oxidize ammonia. The following anoxic tank, the third in series, will remove total
nitrogen. The fourth and final tank will re-aerate the water and remove any residual external
carbon from the anoxic tank. Nexom will work with Banning staff to plan and execute
regular process sampling. The anticipated sampling parameters / points are listed below:

Pilot Dimensions The pilot will require level laydown area that is, at
minimum, 50 ft by 14 ft, with access for the operators on
one side and one ends. The pilot will require a source of
primary clarifier effluent to feed the MBBR process. The
pilot will also require a location to discharge MBBR effluent.
The pilot is installed in a standard ISO 40 ft high cube
shipping container:
Parameter Unit Value
Length x Width x Height ft 40 x 8 x 9.5
Weight (Shipping / Operating) lb 11,000 / 18,000
Pilot Requirements Provided by Site The pilot will require a power supply and connection of electrical service: 208 V/3-
phase/100 amps. An internet connection will be required for remote monitoring by camera
and online dissolved oxygen and temperature sensors. Remote monitoring will serve for
data logging, as well as to indicate pilot conditions. A potable / cleaning water supply, of
8 gpm minimum, will be required for cleanup. A garden hose connection is suitable for the
required water source.
Project Schedule The project schedule is based on the following major milestones and activities:
Description Anticipated Duration
Site Preparation (by others)
Pilot Mobilization and Delivery* 4-5 week
Equipment Set-Up 1 week (onsite)
Pilot Start-Up: Acclimation of Biomass 2-4 weeks (onsite)
Operation and Data Collection 8-10 weeks (onsite)
Pilot Demobilization and Removal 1 week (onsite)
Data Analysis 1 week
Report / Recommendations 2 weeks
*From date of PO.
NOTE: Some tasks in the schedule may be performed concurrently. For example, Site
Preparation may be performed during Pilot Mobilization and Delivery. Operation and Data
Collection would also be performed concurrently with Data Analysis.
