In times of unpredictable equity markets, shifting demographics and surging technology, the best banking and financial institutions don’t simply survive. Instead, the most successful companies are taking these changes and turning them into opportunities to grow, profit and establish greater levels of operations, efficiency and innovation. The key to this success is building smarter connections among people, places and technology —a dynamic process that carefully integrates a company’s business plans and goals with an understanding of human interaction.

How to get there from here? With a cohesive and collaborative approach to workplace design. Today’sworkplace breaks down the traditional hierarchy-driven model, placing it with open spaces and a sophisticated blend of teaming and private areas. It rejects rigid workstations in favor of controllable, comfortable spaces. And it places technology firmly in the hands of those

who use it every day. This new flexible, cost-effective workplace not only establishes meaningful connections to employees, but also sends an important message to clients about the culture and mission of the company that inhabits it.

The process begins with a strategic plan for the growth, image and positioning of your company. Working with a design team that translates your plan to your workplace affords you the chance to reinvent or strengthen your corporate culture, while cultivating the best of a productive workforce and efficient operations. It helps you to establish the right mix of flexibility, technology, security, and public profile that sustains your company today. And most importantly, a well-designed workplace that works for its users secures your company’s ability to adapt, respond and benefit from changes in the future.

As a financial or banking firm, the challenges and successes you face are different from those of other companies. Your best resources are loyal customers —a group that is becoming increasingly elusive as people are recognizing that they have options in a buyer’s market. Part of capturing and retaining that customer base is about communicating trust and fortitude. As the packaging for your company, your workplace has the power to impress, to inform and to foster loyalty. It also sets your company apart by reinforcing your brand.

From layout to signage, every detail is integral to generating a consistent message that inspires and forges relationships with clients and employees. Your corporate strengths should provide a basis for your design, which, in turn, further strengthens your selling points. Technological sophistication that matches your public image, your provisions for employee comfort, and a strong statement of architecture and space are the keys to reflecting, enhancing and repositioning your organizational culture.

In uncertain economic times, companies are finding that their workplaces are constantly being reconfigured to meet changing needs, generate productivity and minimize future costs. Today’s smart workplaces encourage people to “work well,” offering flexibility and reusability, in addition to promoting comfort and health. Good design also allows us to stay on top of the most advanced technology now, while planning for changes — and shifting staffing requirements — down the road.

Adaptability is revolutionizing personal space. Physically and emotionally supportive environments breed the creativity and communication necessary to stay relevant and potent in today’s market. Putting environmental workspace control in the hands of employees has proven to have a profound effect on efficiency and attitude. Understanding how best to promote flexibility in your workplace bolsters the constant comfort and commitment of satisfied employees.

Business today moves at the speed of the market. And the market never stops moving. Though technological agility is necessary to stay ahead of the competition, today’s opportunities lie in being smart to market. Planning for the rapid evolution of systems, supporting the need for reconfiguration and providing systems that support a human-centered approach give companies an edge, while solidifying a fluid and seamless connection between workplace and technology.

At the same time, protecting people, systems and data has become a priority more than ever before. Smart workplace design is crucial to ensure that secured facilities do not encroach on aesthetics or employees’ experiences. Companies should be able to remain efficient and keep business flowing naturally. Incorporating security from the start of design affords your business maximum safety with minimum compromise, while further fostering the comfort and confidence of your clients and employees.

Location: CoralGables,floridaClient: InternationalBankofMiamiservices: InteriorArchitectureandDesign andfurnitureprocurement

This 50,000 SF headquarters facility in Coral Gables is designed to accommodate the Bank's Correspondent Banking and domestic and international Private Banking operations, as well as their trading functions and Operations groups. RTKL was challenged to establish corporate standards for the organization, and then implement them throughout the project. RTKL's knowledge of technologies, audio-visual customer contact elements, and the function of client and employee interaction drove the design of the space throughout the entire process. Reflecting the image of the institution, the space is made up of expanded, more efficient and upgraded customer contact areas for internal and external meeting and teaming. The design draws references from the Latin American region, the Bank's primary customer base. The furnishings, more residential in nature, add to the feeling of comfort, while an impressive artwork collection by U.S. and Latin American artists adds vitality and interest. State-of-the-art technology, communications systems and ambient lighting round out the space.

Location: keyLargo,floridaClient: GibraltarBankservices: InteriorArchitectureandDesignand furnitureprocurement

Gibraltar Bank's 4,000 SF facility within the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo is more than a bank. Here, personal services are offered to an elite seasonal clientele. Bank patrons use the space just as much as an office away from home as they do for banking activities.

Just as in the headquarters in Coral Gables, the bank offers mortgage lending services and investment service via an allegiance with Bessemer Trust. There is also a small teller function. The very upscale space gives the feel and ambiance of the British West Indies. A custom aquarium is an engrossing highlight, making reference to its unique Keys location.

Gibraltar Bank's headquarters facility in Coral Gables is an elegant space that serves its high net-worth private and mortgage banking clientele. RTKL designed the 19,000 SF space to reflect the image of the institution and develop an important tool in advancing the business of the bank.

Set within an architecturally traditional building, the space uses light woods and simplified detailing to achieve a relaxed feel and a regional flavor. The residential-style furnishings add to the feeling of comfort, while an impressive artwork collection by U.S. and Latin American artists adds vitality and interest. State-of-the-art technology includes sophisticated audio-visual systems in presentation areas and advanced communications equipment. Ambient lighting is used throughout the space to provide a softly lit, glare-free environment for the many computer users.

sensitivedesignlinksafinancialcenterwithanadjoininghotel

Location: Miami,floridaClient: primaservices: InteriorDesignandInteriorArchitecture

RTKL provided interior architecture and design for 40,000 SF of public spaces in Barclays Financial Center, the first office building constructed on Miami's Brickell Avenue in over a decade. The large-scale public spaces of the building include a multi-function "great hall" space, a reception station for the building lobby, and adjoining spaces fronting on ground floor retail, elevator lobbies and hallways.

The 30-story Barclays building was co-developed with an adjoining JW Marriott hotel property. While both buildings are contemporary in their architecture, the interiors of the Marriott hotel followed a very traditional imagery and formula consistent with the chain. RTKL's design solution fulfilled the owner's desire to create contemporary office building interiors that related to the architectural base building while also maintaining a link to the adjoining hotel. Crisp, stark materials used on the exterior of the building were repeated, tempered by the introduction of figured woods and warm stone colors to ease the transition between properties.

Location: Tokyo,JapanClient: shinseiBank,Ltd.services: Designandfit-outforflagshipfacility, prototypekit-of-partsDesign

Shinsei Bank's new flagship facility had one main goal: Stand out from other Japanese financial institutions by emphasizing customer service, a revolutionary concept in Japan's banking industry. The company wanted to respond to demographics and customer preferences by rethinking the overall banking experience. RTKL's resulting design is a total branded environment that combines technology with a personal touch, integrating corporate identity, print collateral, furnishings and graphics to foster customer satisfaction and build trust.

From the outside-where banners, tables and grassy areas create a warm, welcoming entrance-to the inside-where a large, animated video wall broadcasts financial news and other programming-the facility's design speaks to the customer. ATMs, a coffee bar and LED readerboards appeal to visitors' comfort and interest. In place of a typical long banking counter, smaller stations provide a more personal feel. Consultation areas and a VIP banking room are positioned to be more private without compromising the effect of the open, fluid environment.

The successful facility set design standards for the rollout of a new style of branch banks called "Financial Centers." RTKL has converted 24 existing branches so far and is working toward the bank's ultimate goal of establishing 50 branded banking environments throughout Japan.

Location: Washington,DCClient: TheWorldBankservices: programming,spaceplanning, InteriorArchitectureandMepengineering

RTKL was tapped to design a prototypical space for The World Bank's distance learning facilities all over the globe. These facilities represent a major step in using available technology to decentralize the World Bank and provide valuable courses for member countries.

A major challenge inherent in the project was the development of workable lighting, acoustical, audio-visual, mechanical and electrical systems for successful broadcasting worldwide. These systems required flexible elements that could easily be fabricated and shipped to field facilities for adjustment to existing conditions. The prototype of necessity had to appeal to both the donor country and the countries that use World Bank services. An interactive classroom holds 30 students and an instructor, and is supplemented by a 30-student personal computer lab as well as a network communications room.

Location: Miami,floridaClient: ABnAmroBankservices: InteriorArchitectureandDesign

This 35,000 SF headquarters facility in Miami is designed to accommodate the Bank's domestic and international Private Banking operations, as well as their trading functions and the Bank's regional Operations groups. In the planning stages, RTKL evaluated and adapted corporate standards established at their Amsterdam headquarters. ABN Amro Bank hoped to turn these standards into an identity that would connect with the Florida and Latin American market and clientele.

The space accommodates a mixture of operations and Private Banking and Asset Management. Customer contact and meeting spaces allow for meetings with multiple clients at once, and allow for the Bank to entertain and host community events in their spaces, gaining and expanding market exposure. The design is conservative but contemporary, with the color palette derived from vibrant tones common in the Latin American market. In the selections of materials, the team deviated from corporate standards, leaning toward materials that are more appropriate for the target marketplace.

Location: Dallas,TexasClient: Bancone,Texasservices: programming,spaceplanning,full-service InteriorArchitecture,projectManagement, Move,furnitureCoordination

After Banc One Corporation of Columbus, Ohio, acquired Texas-based Momentum Bank (or MBank), Bank One, Texas was formed and the complicated process of merging the new corporate cultures, facilities and staff began. Using RTKL's strategic facilities analysis, Bank One, Texas relocated non-customer contact functions to an adjacent downtown building, consolidating executive and trust offices.

Terms of the newly negotiated lease called for the bank to use 13 floors (386,000 SF) already occupied by the bank. Achieved while the bank was in constant operation, a phased release of floors to the landlord was accomplished by a complex reconfiguration and reorganization of bank functions. RTKL developed a master move sequencing and construction schedule to coordinate the project team. New floors were purposely designed as generic spaces with simplified space standards and readily available materials and finishes.

The final phase of the reconfiguration included the relocation of executive management offices, trust offices and dining facilities to a new floor. In keeping with the highly successful mid-western bank, the new executive offices were designed to project a sophisticated, yet timeless and elegant image.

Location: Baltimore,MarylandClient: BankofBaltimoreservices: InteriorArchitectureandDesign,Mepengineering, environmentalGraphicDesign

For the Bank of Baltimore's executive offices, RTKL provided this historic institution with an updated image to match its new corporate headquarters building, also designed by RTKL. The 52,000 SF project included the design of executive offices and reception areas, a board room, conference rooms, a private dining room, kitchen facilities, and general office space for the operating divisions.

Addressing the client's request for a conservative yet contemporary image, RTKL drew design inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement and the Vienna Secessionists. The result is a space of simple elegance, clean lines, and an open, uncluttered feel. The designers also replicated grid patterns and materials from the building itself, applying them to flooring, walls, and interior shutters. Furnishings and fabrics include Secessionist-inspired custom-designed and reproduction furniture.

Location: palmBeach,ft.Lauderdale, MiamiandBocaRaton,floridaClient: MellonBankservices: InteriorArchitectureandDesign

Mellon Asset Management established their base in South Florida with initial locations in Miami and Boca Raton. After confirming the potential of the South Florida market, they planned expansion into other locations. RTKL designed space for their initial expansion in the Boca Raton market as a prototype, and then their subsequent expansions.

The planning of the various locations was based on corporate standards established at their Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, headquarters. Mellon, however, challenged RTKL to help establish an identity, in the design of their spaces, that would connect with the Florida market and clientele. The initial prototype accommodates a mixture of Operations, Private Banking and Asset Management with a high net-worth client base. Customer contact and meeting spaces allow Mellon to entertain and host community events in their spaces, gaining and expanding market exposure. The design of the space is conservative but contemporary. In the selection of materials, the team deviated from corporate standards, leaning toward materials that are more appropriate for the Florida market.

BankBoston established their base in South Florida with an initial location in Coral Gables, to accommodate their International Private Banking group. This 30,000 SF facility would establish its design imagery and functional prototype for the Florida marketplace, and would be the basis for the design of their future locations. RTKL took the long-standing Boston identity and reinterpreted it for the Florida market and clientele.

The initial prototype accommodates a mixture of operations and Private Banking and Asset Management, with a high net-worth client base. Customer contact and meeting spaces accommodate multiple clients at once, and allow for BankBoston to entertain and host community events in their spaces, gaining and expanding market exposure. Although the space is conservative and traditional like its Boston counterparts, the detailing is simplified and the color palette is derived from lighter tones and materials. The team deviated from corporate standards, leaning toward materials more appropriate for the Florida market. The design of the initial space was well-received by the community and the clientele, and acted as the prototype for the other locations in the state.

Location: Miami, floridaClient: DresdnerBankservices: programming, spaceplanning, InteriorArchitectureandDesign, furnitureprocurement

The challenge in designing the 25,000 SF administrative offices of Dresdner Bank was to preserve the identity of the German banking corporation while infusing a look appropriate to its South Florida location. The space, used primarily for operations and private/corporate banking activities, is highly efficient and incorporates standards developed during the programming phase of the project.

In response to the client's wish for a very crisp, hard-edged contemporary environment, designers incorporated local Key stone as a featured element. Set within a neutral palette of materials, the stone delivers the clean lines desired by the bank and provides a clear reference to its Florida setting.

Location: Miami,floridaClient: Mckinsey&Companyservices: programming,spaceplanning,InteriorArchitectureandDesign,furnitureprocurement

When this global consulting firm contemplated a Miami location, they wanted a space that would appeal to both their Latin American and domestic client bases. The original 14,000 SF traditional consulting practice has now been doubled, adding an incubator function to bring developing companies to the point of an IPO. The plan responds to McKinsey's typical practice of reconfiguring project teams to address a continuous stream of new assignments. Enclosed, shared team offices utilize mobile furniture with flexible technological components capable of systematic reconfiguration.

Walls are demountable, all furniture is on wheels, and the company is moving toward a wireless environment. The office also includes multi-functional spaces used for teaming, conferencing, entertaining, and dining. Each area can be reconfigured to accommodate growth.Contemporary furnishings speak to the mobility and dynamics of the consulting firm. The look is conservative and regional in choice of colors and materials, with a slight nautical feel that acknowledges its location on Biscayne Bay.

Location: Miami,floridaClient: ernst&youngservices: InteriorArchitectureandDesign

Ernst & Young occupies 40,000 SF on two floors of Miami's First Union Financial Center. The premier consulting firm retained RTKL to transform a very contemporary space into a warm and traditional environment consistent with its corporate image. First Union offered spectacular views and a dramatic 10-foot ceiling height, but little else to contribute to the desired look. The challenge was escalated by the directive to keep within the building's construction allowance.

A design plan was developed that would blend with existing contemporary elements to produce a warmer, more comfortable effect. Mahogany and cherry wood trim was used in conjunction with existing granite walls; honed granite floors were partly covered with custom-designed area rugs and antique Orientals; teak files that were left by the previous tenant were reused; and executive offices were modified with new doors and lighting. The resulting space exudes a soft, traditional feel within a starkly contrasting modern building.
