Promotion Standards

• Bandys is on a Block Schedule– We have 2 semesters– Each semester has 4 classes each semester (90

minutes each)

• Units of credit required for grade placement

– Sophomore = 6 credits– Junior =13 credits– Senior = 20 credits

• Classification changed only at the end of the Academic Year (June)

Graduation Requirements

• All Students must:• Earn 28 credits • Pass the 5 Gateway classes (Biology, English I, Algebra I, Civics, & US History)• Complete the Graduation Project• Pass the computer test (done in 8th grade—however you will have more chances to

pass at BHS if you aren’t successful on the first try)

• Rising 9th Grade Students: Future Ready Core• 21 state-required courses –15 core credits• 4 elective credits within the same concentration

* Arts Education * Career and Technical Education (CTE)* ROTC * Any other subject area (all in math,

science, etc)

• 2 elective credits of any combination» Arts Education» CTE» Foreign Language

Rising 9th Grade: Future Ready Core

• 4 English classes• English I, English II, English III, and English IV

• 4 math classes• Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and an advanced math class

• 3 science classes• Earth Science, Biology, and a Physical Science (Physical Sci,

Chemistry, or Physics)

• 3 History classes• World History, Civics & Economics, and US History

• Health & PE

• 4 classes within the same concentration:• Arts Education (Art, Band, Chorus, Drama), Career & Technical

Education (CTE Career Clusters), ROTC, or another subject area (math, science, social studies, etc)

Preparing to be in High School:

What YOU need to know

Gaining Credit/GPA• Starting with your freshman year, your students have

a clean slate

• GPA begins with their first semester freshman year grades

• To get credit in a class you must have a 70

• You must have 6 credits to be promoted to 10th grade

What YOU need to know

Rigor – Every year is important.

– Your GPA that you will use to apply to college is based on your GPA at the end of your Junior year… but every year counts… stay focused. Grades (both good and bad) will follow you to graduation. Keep it academic.

– You need an English, Math, and Foreign Language your senior year, as well as other academics to remain competitive (so plan accordingly).

Attendance – You can not learn unless you are IN SCHOOL

– At Bandys we take attendance by period and by day– Each class you go to takes attendance– Perfect attendance is done by day

– If you miss more than six classes then you fail—unless you make up time (either in Saturday school or after school with the teacher)

– You will need notes for when you are absent• Doctors note vs. Parent note vs. No Note

Level I – Major Offenses

• Fighting• Theft• Sale/possessions of drugs

or alcohol• Sexual Harassment or

Racial Harassment• Cursing a staff member

Consequences of Level I

1st offense: Up to 5 Days OSS2nd offense: Up to 10 days

OSS3rd offense: 10 days of OSS

with possible indefinite suspension

Level II – Serious Offenses

• Giving false information• Disrespect for authority • Leaving campus without

checking out properly• Parking anywhere other than

student parking lot• Leaving class without

permission

Consequences of Level II 1st offense: ½ day ISS2nd offense: 1 day ISS3rd offense: 2 days ISS & parent

contact4th offense: 1 day OSS5th offense: 2 days OSS… (etc)

Level III – Minor Offense• Running in the halls• Undirected profanity• Possession of fire starting

devices• Unauthorized use of cell

phones• Public display of affection

during school

What YOU need to knowDrivers Eligibility

– There will be a Driver’s Ed in May and in September for any students who are eligible or there are several throughout the school year that will be announced

– Students must be 14 years and 6 months by the day the class begins

– Students must pass 5 of 6 classes (in 8th grade) to be eligible

– In order to keep their driver’s license you must pass 3 of 4 classes in high school

– If they drop out, they can not get their license until they are 18 years old

• All 9th grade students are eligible to play fall sports

• Students must pass 3 of their 4 classes to play spring sports

• If you are interested in football, volleyball, and cheerleading– Someone will be at Mill Creek recruiting before the

school year is over

– Colleges, scholarships, and employers look at extra curricular involvement and leadership.

• Over the summer there is always at least one person in the Counseling Center, so you can call or stop by if you need anything.

• Once the school year starts you can come into the counseling center and if we are there, just poke your head in and we will help you if we can. If we are not there or are tied up at the moment, you will fill out a slip and let us know that you need to see us, and we will call you from class.

Registration Essentials

• Your students should all have the following:

– Registration Handbook/Tabloid

– Registration Sheet (grade level)

–Math & English Placement Forms

– Transcript with credits already earned (if currently enrolled at BHS)

Registration Sheets• Teacher recommendations are attached (some are

completed, some are blank)

• Need teacher signature AND parent to sign off

• Students need to choose their courses wisely—and let them be courses they can live with

• These are due back to us:• By March 17th – To the Counseling Center (for students at

Bandys)• March 25th – For current 8th graders – we will come back to

Mill Creek and meet with them to discuss their registration

Guidelines for Completing the Registration Sheet:

Rising 9th Graders• Your student must register for a total of 8 courses

• Their 4 core classes are already listed for you• English (use your placement letter)• Math (use your placement letter)• Earth Science (Circle Honors or Regular)• World History (choose Honors or Regular)

• Health & PE is automatically written in for you

• Three alternates in order of preference should be listed under alternate section

• Write-in the name of the course (so it can be read!!!!!)

Guidelines for Completing the Registration Sheet:

Rising 9th Grade

Review the electives on the back of the sheet

– All options for Freshman are listed on the back of this sheet

– Band and chorus must be taken for BOTH semesters

– Freshman can not take Spanish; however, high level students can be recommended for French during their freshman year

Guidelines for Completing the Registration Sheet:

Rising 9th Grade

• They will work on their registration sheets for the next 3 weeks

• Once they have completed the sheet they will hold onto to these and make sure they have them with them when we come back on March 25th

• Counselors will meet with students individually on that day to talk about classes

• Parents may call if they have questions or to make an appointment

Guidelines for Completing the Registration Sheet:

Rising 10th-12th

• They must register for a total of 8 courses

• Three alternates in order of preference should be listed under alternate section (Refer to the registration handbook for all possible options)

• DC means they must have a signature from the Department Chair– English & Math placement letters serve as math “DC”

• Write-in name of course (so it can be read!)

Guidelines for Completing the Registration Sheet:

Rising 10th-12th

• They will work on their registration sheet for the next 2 weeks

• Once you have completed the sheet you will turn these into Ms. Williamson in the Counseling Center by March 17th

• Counselors will meet with students individually once their sheets have been turned in to talk about class choices

• Parents may call if they have questions or to make an appointment

Final Details…• Students register for a course not a teacher

• Enrollment in a course determines whether or not the course will be offered

• Be sure to get approval from your teacher and parent if you are wishing to change levels of a course (i.e.: CP to Honors or Honors to CP)

• Challenge yourself with your course selections according to your ability

• Talk further with your counselor/teacher if you need assistance in course selections

• Choose your courses carefully—pick classes you want to take!
