EMC – Passes Government TEMPEST Testing

• Electromagnetic compatibility EMC)– The ability to minimize radiated emissions– The ability to resist interference from

radiation• Screens and shields inherently protect against

radiation and emissions• TEMPEST refers to a US government classified

set of emissions limits and test procedures• It is a counter-intelligence measure to prevent

electronic espionage• Class F/FA systems featuring the TERATM

connector are the only cabling solutions that are TEMPEST approved

Page 16: Bandwidth & Applications - Siemon 7 Cable • S/FTP fully shielded cable (Shielded with foil twisted-pairs) • 4-pair, 22 AWG • 8.5 mm (.330 inch) nominal OD • Shielding virtually

Grounding Recommendations– Siemon’s Class F and FA cabling solutions feature a quick and

easy grounding method

– A dc ground shall be provided at one end of the cabling only

– The TERATM solution automatically grounds the cable shield to the terminating patch panel when the connector is inserted into the patch panel

– The panel is grounded via a 6 AWG ground wire to the TGB

Page 17: Bandwidth & Applications - Siemon 7 Cable • S/FTP fully shielded cable (Shielded with foil twisted-pairs) • 4-pair, 22 AWG • 8.5 mm (.330 inch) nominal OD • Shielding virtually

TERATM Home Cabling• Chosen as the primary interface within ISO/IEC 15018, “Information

Technology — Integrated Cabling Systems for Homes”

• TERA is the only connector for use in all three ISO/IEC recognized home cabling applications:

information and communications technology (ICT),

broadcast communications technologies (BCT) and

commands, controls and communication in buildings (CCCB)

• TERA is the only balanced copper connector specified by the ISO/IEC home cabling standard to support BCT

Page 18: Bandwidth & Applications - Siemon 7 Cable • S/FTP fully shielded cable (Shielded with foil twisted-pairs) • 4-pair, 22 AWG • 8.5 mm (.330 inch) nominal OD • Shielding virtually

TERA Video Applications• 1-pair application

• NEXT loss not critical

• Insertion loss and return loss most important

• TERA to CCTV baluns

• TERA to CATV baluns

• Consolidation points and amplifiers can increase distance

• CATV Service: Channels 2 to 78 over frequencies 5 MHz to 446 MHz

• CATV UHF: 470 MHz to 862 MHz

Termination Practices

• Quick termination with familiar tools — TERA™ CPT cable prep tool

• Accurately strips jacket and foil from 4-pair S/FTP cable without damaging the conductors

• TERATM features a pair template to aid cable preparation

• Termination video available at www.siemon.com

Page 21: Bandwidth & Applications - Siemon 7 Cable • S/FTP fully shielded cable (Shielded with foil twisted-pairs) • 4-pair, 22 AWG • 8.5 mm (.330 inch) nominal OD • Shielding virtually

Installation Practices• Shielded cables require a larger bend radius (e.g. 4-pair needs

50 mm or 2 inches)

• Grounding/bonding required at ER/TR

• Pathways and termination housings need to accommodate bend radius requirements 50mm

75mm(While maintaining the recommended50mm bending radius for 4pr shielded

cable. Note: Cable bend can commencewithin the boot due to flexible housing)

Page 22: Bandwidth & Applications - Siemon 7 Cable • S/FTP fully shielded cable (Shielded with foil twisted-pairs) • 4-pair, 22 AWG • 8.5 mm (.330 inch) nominal OD • Shielding virtually

Mounting OptionsNew mounting options to reduce mounting depth to 50 mm/2 in or less to accommodate shallow pathways

• Angled CT Adapter– Snaps into any CT opening– Provides angled TERA work area solution– Also angles back end to reduce mounting depth

• TERA Outlet with Flex Boot– New outlet version with angled boot – New termination practice to remove jacket section– Enables 90 degree bend of TERA cable

Page 23: Bandwidth & Applications - Siemon 7 Cable • S/FTP fully shielded cable (Shielded with foil twisted-pairs) • 4-pair, 22 AWG • 8.5 mm (.330 inch) nominal OD • Shielding virtually

Options for Surface MountingNew surface mount outlets support the TERA™ connector and a

50 mm/2 inch bend radius

50 mm bend radius per

ISO ‘11801 requirements for cables > 6.0 mm

Is Cable Sharing Allowed? Yes!• TIA

– Not specifically excluded– Annex B provides guidance on shared sheath multipair UTP

cables• ISO/IEC 11801 (Commercial)

– Clause 9.3 provides crosstalk consideration for cable sharing– Guidance provided for minimizing sheath sharing incompatibilities

• ISO/IEC 15018 (Home)– Cable sharing may be considered when pathway space is limited

• Using fully-shielded cables alleviates all concerns

Page 28: Bandwidth & Applications - Siemon 7 Cable • S/FTP fully shielded cable (Shielded with foil twisted-pairs) • 4-pair, 22 AWG • 8.5 mm (.330 inch) nominal OD • Shielding virtually

Typical Scenarios:• One TERA™ replaces three Cat 5e/6

outlets assuming– 10/100BASE-T data (2-pair)– voice (1-pair)– Fax or video (1-pair)

• One TERA replaces four analog voice outlets– Perfect for call or fax centers– Uses MuTOA or SM Box for workgroup

• Can result in reduced conduit fill• Reduces the number of outlets at the WA• Can reduce faceplates at the WA

TCO Conclusions

• 10Gbps over copper is a reality• Category 5e is not a good investment for new installations• Augmented category 6 (Siemon 10G 6A UTP and F/UTP)

provides much better TCO/ROI compared to category 6 UTP

• TERA is the highest performing copper cabling system with excellent TCO/ROI

• Cable sharing offers even better TCO/ROI• Siemon offers the most comprehensive suite of 10 Gbps-
