PROGRAM NOTES Legacy was composed and arranged for the developing concert band. It was written in tribute to the traditional concert band overtures of the latter half of the 20th century. Beginning with a short yet powerful opening statement, the melody is first introduced in the trumpet section followed by a full band response. The simple yet elegant melodic line is developed throughout, leading to an exciting conclusion. NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR The opening two measures should be very energetic and in contrast to the “lightness” beginning in measure 3. Please pay particular attention to the subito piano in measure 11 with care given to an even crescendo that follows. Various dynamic effects are included throughout the piece, including the forte-piano as noted in measure 25. These teaching opportunities are included as reinforcement to these crucial expressive concepts. The short “fugue” beginning at measure 34 should be carefully balanced for clarity through the band. Care should be given to balance at the end of the piece as well for the most effective conclusion possible. We hope that you and your band find Legacy to be a rewarding experience and valuable addition to your concert program. Best wishes for a wonderful performance! Legacy An Overture for Band ROBERT W.
