06- You are going to read a text about Glastonbury, a major festival in England. Then, find the numbers

below in the text. Write a sentence to say what they refer to. The first one is done for you.

GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL

The first Glastonbury Festival took place in 1970 and was organised by Michael Eavis, who still runs the festival now on his farm in Somerset in the souty-west of England. Michael charged people just £1 to enter, and the ticket included free milk from the farm. Only 1,500 people attended on that occasion, but this number has grown exponentially since then. In 2011, there were approximately 100 times more people in the crowd and tickets, which cost £195 each, sold out within 4 hours. The festival takes place almost every year in the last weekend of June and lasts for three days.

Although it is best known for contemporary music, Glastonbury (or ‘Glasto’ as it is often called) is host to other performing arts such as dance, comedy and theatre. The festival site is now made up of distinct zones, each one providing something different to cater for the tastes of all those present.

Countless famous British musicians have played at the festival, including Sir Paul McCartney, Oasis and Coldplay, however the festival also attracts International interest, and has seen headline acts in recent years such as the likes of Beyonce Knowles, Stevie Wonder and Jay-Z.

The festival is renowned for being extremely muddy, and on may occasions, most notably in 1997, heavy rainfall turned the whole festival site into a quagmire.

Glastonbury-goes remani undeterred, however, and are quite happy to boogie the festival away in their wellies.

Because of the high demand for tickets, the festival has also been famous for ‘fence-jumpers’. In 2000, when only 100,000 tickets were sold, about 250,000 people attended the event — many of whom jumped over the surrounding fence to gain entry. Security increased in 2002 and a ‘superfence’ was created to prevent people from entering without a ticket. In the same year, the new Pyramid Stage, graced by the presence of David Bowie, was welcome back following its demise in 1994 when it burnt down just a week before the festival was to begin.

The festival supports Fair Trade and has made substantial contributions to charity over the years. In 2003, over a million pounds was donated, and Greenpeace, Oxfam and WaterAid continue to be main beneficiaries.

The next Glastonbury festival is set to take place in 2013, following a year off in 2012 to make way for the Olympics and give the farmland a chance to recover. Registration for tickets is already open.

12- Read the following text and circle the 9 verbs in the PRESENT PERFECT.

Since its start in 1988, Google has become one of the most popular search engines. It has grown from a research project in the dormitory room of two college students to a business that now employs approximately 20,000 people.

Google’s founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, met in 1995 when they were in their twenties and graduate students in computer Science at Stanford University in California. They realized that Internet search was a very important field and began working together to make searching easier. Both Page and Brin left their studies at Stanford to work on their project. Interestingly, they have never returned to finish their degrees.

Brin was born in Russia, but he has lived in the U.S. since he was five years old. His father was a mathematician in Russia. Page, whose parents were computer experts, has been interested in computers since he was six years old.

When Google started in 1998, it did 10,000 searches a day. Today it does 235 million searchers a day in 40 languages. It indexes 1 trillion Web pages. How is Google different from other search engines? Have you ever noticed how many ads and banners there are on other search engines? News, sports scores, stock prices, links for shopping, mortgage rates, and more fill other search engines. Brin and Page wanted a clean home page. They believed that people come to the Internet to search for specific information, not to be hit with a lot of unwanted data. The success of Google over its rivals has proved that this is true.

Over the years, Google has added new features to its web site: Google Images, where you can type in a word and get thousands of pictures; Google News, which takes you to today’s News; Google Maps; and more. But one thing hasn’t changed: the clean opening page that Google offers its users.

In 2009, Forbes.com listed Page and Brin as having net worths of $12 billion each, at 36 and 35 years old.

06- You are going to read a text about Glastonbury, a major festival in England. Then, find the numbers below in the text.
