WHO WE ARE?
WHAT ARE WE DOING?
Design and implement wastewater treatment systems using phytoremediation processes

A phytoremediation based technology
2002 : The Bambou-Assainissement® technology is patented
2005 : The first commercialized Bambou-Assainissement® site
Validation of the technology by the French Water Agency (for winery effluent in 2004, and for olive oil mill wastewater in 2009)
Initially developed for the treatment of :
- Agricultural effluent
(Winery effluent and wastewater of olive oil mill wastewater)
- Domestic wastewater
Adaptation of the Bambou-Assainissement® technology for the food industry effluents Eco-Innovation European project « BRITER-WATER »

WHY DID WE REALIZE THE BRITER-WATER PROJECT? Initially, Bambou-Assainissement® was designed and
sized for a wastewater treatment on existing soil
Good remediation performances (see Arfi et al. 2009*)
* “Initial efficiency of a bamboo grove-based treatment system
for winery wastewater”. Desalinisation 246 : 69-77.)
BUT FOR POTENTIAL INDUSTRIAL CUSTOMERS Too large treatment areas are necessary (5 to 10 m2/P.E.)
Need to regularly monitored the treated water
13th European Forum on Eco-innovation 8
WHY DID WE REALIZE THE BRITER-WATER PROJECT?
TO MATCH WITH INDUSTRIAL MARKET, PHYTOREM PLANNED TO BUILD AT REAL SCALE, A SECOND TYPE OF Bambou-Assainissement® SYSTEM :
Rhizome barrier
Impervious liner
Top layer
Drainage layer Treated water Transition
layer
Filtration layer
In this system bamboos are not planted in existing soil but in filtration materials
Smaller treatment surface than
1st BA ® system (1 to 3 m2/P.E.)
All the treated water is collected

OVERVIEW OF THE BRITER-WATER PROJECT
13th European Forum on Eco-innovation 11
Average load 35 m3/day of food-industry grey
water, and up to 100 m3/day
The treatment area of 1500 m2
Functioning since September 2010
The total height of the filter is about 1m, and 6
filtration materials were used for the 4 layers of the
filter
The flow of the effluent applies on the bamboo
filter is vertical

LESSONS LEARNED / RECOMMENDATIONS
13th European Forum on Eco-innovation
The project must be well defined and prepared with partners
Partners must be complementary and not concurrent (facilitate IP agreement)
Need to have a partner expert in management project
Need to have a major industrial partner
Financial support should be given “in real time” all along the project for the major expenditures (it is difficult for SMEs to advance big amount of money)
For potentially exportable technologies, a WP dedicates to exportation should be planned in the project
