LIFEBauhaus LifeOne day after we came bake, Fu Yetao told me that one day he dreamed of Weimar, the calssic, little European town in the east of Germany...
Why this programme? What Were We doing during 4 Weeks time?
Wood stands for nature, warmth and life, and thus it is an indispensable element in people’s life. However, while the global forest resource is suffering from heavy decline, timber resource in Europe becomes very limited. The issue of looking for substitution for wood has been raised up under such circumstance. Bamboo appears a wonderful choice for its short growth cycle and outstanding material properties. Since China is called the “home of bamboo”, the product design department of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar decided to cooperate with Zhejiang University (ZJU) to develop new products with bamboo.
Students from Bauhaus and ZJU would work together in mixed teams under instruction of professors from both schools. Unlike projects in ZJU, all achievements would be real models made by ourselves in the workshop. Due to this difference, the exchange activities would be full of surprise and fun.
The ZJU team arrived at Weimar on November 3, Monday. Mr. Welf Oertel showed us around the Bauhaus Campus the next day, and we had an interesting tour in the wood workshop and the Aquarium (Office), where we were going to spend most of our time.
And on the same day we met the Bauhaus students, together with whom we would work for the whole month. All the students including us are divided into 3 groups. Each group has their own leader, team name and team Logo. Except German guys, there are students from Russia, Korea and China, it's really international group. Gradually in the following days, we found that each group has there own way to cooperate, but there are some common characteristis among those students, they are hardworking, serious and would like to find the truth of design & life.
On Wednesday, we did the first presentation. Students from ZJU showed the market and industry of bamboo in China, and students from Bauhaus presented some products they collected in daily life and information about bamboo products from the internet. Prof. Heiko Bartels also showed us some delicate bamboo craftwork and plywood furniture to inspire us. After discussions, the task for the following two weeks was settled – experimenting on bamboo material. At last we managed to divide ourselves into four groups. We felt a little about the working sytle of German people in this meeting, they are not only doing research through the internet, they go to the real world to feel the products and material, it's really useful to help us to explore the possibility of design and innovation.
We focused on material tests for the next two weeks and two presentations. The main purpose of this stage was to comprehensively understand and handle the bamboo material for further design.

We moved onto the stage of design in the third week. Every team found their own interest through brainstorming, and sketches and small models were made.
The last week was for prototype making. Everyone spent every possible hour in the wood workshop to complete their design. At the final presentation on November 27, each team showed their achievements on bamboo products and the development process. Professors were very satisfied with our work.

Chinese Bamboo industry Overview
Bamboo Culture in Ancient China古代中国的竹文化
Bamboo has a close relationship with old China's culture, art, poem and character. Some artist like painters ,poets and musicians just became famous by bamboo topic.
Bamboo means persistent, spiritual and ambitious in Chinese culture. It influences Chinese taste and culture consciousness of aesthetic.
China is one of the bamboo distribution centres of the world, and an important bamboo cultivating country as well. China has more than 4 million hectares bamboo plants, which is about 20-25 percentage of the world’s total number. In Chinese bamboo resource, Mao bamboo plant is the biggest species, with an area of 3,000,000 hm2. Through the whole country, there are 27 provinces as Chinese bamboo distribution centres, one of which is Zhejiang. With a 624,500 hm2 bamboo area, Zhejiang is the second largest bamboo province in China.
Recent years, Chinese bamboo industry developments rapidly. It’s becoming the main support of the forestry industry and a new economic growth point. According to the lately records, the annual production capability of bamboo materials is 18,000,000t, the top 1 in the world. These bamboo products and materials mainly export to South East Asia, Japan, Europe and America, earning 500 million U.S. dollars foreign exchange. According to different processes and usages, bamboo products are classified to 6 sorts, including bamboo plank, bamboo shoots, bamboo crafts, bamboo paper, bamboo products and bamboo extract.

european Bamboo industry Overview
Bamboo products status in Europe欧洲对于竹产品、纤维的应用现状
Nowadays, there are 19 genus, 173 species bamboo plants introduced into Germany. The weather in Germany is similar to the one in East China, but much wetter.
95 percentage of bamboo in Germany and other West Europe countries is used for gardening and improving the environments. First major is bamboo bonsai, which is mainly used in streets, around restaurants’ doors, or shopping malls. The second one is bamboo cartilages. The third one is bamboo parks.
More and more international corporations are using bamboo products as decorative materials for offices, exhibitions and shops, etc. The consumption of bamboo board in Europe is covering 20 percentage of the world’s total number. More countries has found their own bamboo associations, such as Germany, France, England, The Netherlands and Switzerland, etc.
European countries have high bamboo processing techniques. In Germany, bamboo can be made into sporting goods, like surfboarding, skateboard and even bicycle.
In the original introduction meeting, Heiko and Welf emphasized that we could freely to choose the topic and target arounding bamboo material using and design, we could design anything from housing furniture to health care equipment. To the exploring of bamboo fiber and bamboo material, they advice us to do experiment from different facets.
We divided the work flow into 4 steps: analysis of bamboo fiber, test of bamboo fiber, brainstrom & decision making and prototype making.
我们的工作流程大体分为以下几个部分: 研究竹材料特性、材料实验、设计决策、原型机制做。
first, based on the fomer test and experience, we made a conclusion of bamboo fiber's characteristic, especially the advantage; then, we spent 2 weeks to did lots kinds of material tests; based on this, we mada a composite evaluation of all the test matierial and choose the final material we would use and discussed the design direction; at last we make our prototype under the guidence of teachers in the workshop.

2. material test竹材料实验
Refer to the bamboo material, we did a widely research. We get test samples from bending bamboo, cutting pieces in horizontal and vertical directions, wide and slim bamboo fibers, press bamboo board and so on.
We tried different blending method during our research, we tried to make 2D bamboo fiber's intertexture, 3D bamboo board's intertexture, the mixing of bamboo board and horizontal cutting bamboo pieces, bamboo fiber overlayers, ruber mixed bamboo fiber, carbon and glass fiber mixed bamboo pieces.
Refer to the bamboo material, we did a widely research. We get test samples from bending bamboo, cutting pieces in horizontal and vertical directions, wide and slim bamboo fibers, press bamboo board and so on.
We put all the test material that we made last step together, and made some analysis, then everyone voted for his favorate material.
我们将前一阶段积累的所有材料实验的成果集中放置,进行分析,并采用小组投票的方式选出自己喜欢的材料。
1
We voted for 5 kinds of material we like most. 投票选出大家最喜欢的5种材料。
2
We named each of the 5 material based on its characteristic and analysised all the material's advantage and disadvantage based on the 1st step conclusion.
根据材料的最突出特性给选出的几种材料取名字,罗列5种材料的优点和缺点。属性是第一阶段归纳出来的。
3
We named each of the 5 material based on its characteristic and analysised all the material's advantage and disadvantage based on the 1st step conclusion.
After we made the decision to design some furniture, we departed furnitures into 2 groups, one is for sitting and another one is for sleeping or resting.
We voted for several product that we most like to design and made them in a queue from low to high technology. And finally we choose what to do.
