Today , the American Red Cross supports our nation’s military at home and abroad. Emergency Communications Services relay factual, complete, and verified urgent messages to service members anywhere in the world. These messages reach ships at sea, remote embassies, and war zones. This 24 hour per day 365 day per year service assists service members and commanding officers with emergency leave decisions. Financial assistance referrals to relief societies (Air Force Aid Society, Army Emergency Relief, Coast Guard Mutual Assistance, and Navy- Marine Corps) provide avenues to receive funds necessary in an emergency situation. Information and referral services are available to provide confidential information on local resources in emergency needs for food, clothing, and shelter, referrals to counseling services (e.g., financial, legal, mental health), respite care for caregivers, and other resources that meet the unique needs of local military members, veterans and their families. Deployment Services strengthen the resolve of military communities pre-deployment, during deployment, and post-deployment. Supporting Wounded Warriors and Military Hospitals is also a vital mission of the American Red Cross fulfilled through scuba diving therapy, pet visitations, holiday mail, and physical therapy programs among others. Scrubby Bear By Alanna Havlic

Bamberg American Red Cross Office Support and Little Junior Outreach Volutneer

The American Red Cross is an advocate in promoting health and wellness, especially with our youth. Scrubby Bear, a program designed to teach the importance of proper hygiene,

is now being taught to children ages 3-7 in the Bamberg community. Volunteers have been

teaching the importance of good hand washing skills in order to fight off infection and viruses to the young children enrolled in Child Youth and School Age Services and at the Bamberg

Elementary School. Our volunteers teach Scrubby Bear to help young children understand that starting with good habits helps ensure a healthy life. Over 400 children in Bamberg have

participated in the Scrubby Bear program thus far.

Our American Red Cross volunteers emphasize thorough hand washing through the story of Scrubby Bear and

his friend Pigletta. Scrubby Bear washes his hands during the day in order to fight off Pigletta’s nasty cold. Volunteers

incorporate singing and activities to help the children learn while having fun. Scrubby Bear reminds children and adults

that infection can be fought through frequent hand washing by issuing the immediate reminder to scrub your hands,

reinforced by his message, “Don’t get sick, wash up quick!”

Serving Wounded Warriors The American Red Cross relies on the volunteer spirit and financial generosity of the American people to support our military families. Today, as always, the men and women of the American Red Cross continue to show our appreciation for the dedicated service and patriotic sacrifices of America’s military men and women and their families by being there to support them wherever they are and whenever they need us. Check out a few of the things the American Red Cross is doing, and find out how you can help!
