August 1978

Dear Friends,

As President of the Board of Directors of the Fort Mason Foundation, I would like to welcome you to the Pacific States Crafts Fair being held this year at Fort Mason Center. The Foundation is pleased to be a co-sponsor with the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) of this impressive gathering of professional artists from throughout the Western United States and the Eastern Seaboard.

We are committed to expanding cultural, recreational, and environmental programming and converting the Fort Mason warehouses and piers on the Bay into an exciting and innovative community center. Your support: and continuing participation is most welcome.

I hope you enjoy both your visit and the changing face of Fort Mason.

Sincerely,

Dr. Robert Wert Board President Fort Mason Foundation

THANK YOU Thirteen years ago the first craft fair sponsored under the aegis of the American Crafts Council began in northern Vermont . . . totally guided, directed, organized and managed by the volunteer efforts of craftspeople. They hoped to create an event that would serve them as a quality market, would provide the wholesale buyer an opportunity to buy in one central location, would give the general public an opportunity to learn about the American craft movement, and would give craftspeople an opportunity to exchange ideas, information and enthusiasm. That event has come to be known as Rhinebeck . . . the largest and most quality oriented craft exposition in the nation.

Rhinebeck spawned other events . . . the Pacific States Craft Fair in San Francisco, the Winter Market in Baltimore, and soon to be added — a Spring Craft Market in St. Louis.

All of these events have come to be as a direct result of the time, energy, sacrifice and devotion contributed by their greatest asset . . . their volunteers.

On behalf of craftspeople across the nation, T H A N K YOU, to this year's Pacific States volunteers.

followiNq SEA, a shop and gallery celebrating the works of more than

300 professional craft artists from thirty-six of the United States, is, as far as we know, the finest representation of contemporary

American craftsmanship in the country.

followiNq SEA is an ever moving feast, responding to the emergence

of new craft artists and to the evolution of those already established. We have created a basically neutral environment, for the ultimate

worth of our endeavor must be the works themselves. They speak for themselves.

followiNq SEA features a series of special exhibitions through the year.

Exhibiting artists are selected whose work we feel transcends any hypothetical distinction between fine art and fine craft.

Write or call for our 1978 Exhibition Program.

followiNq SEA is not the only reason to come to Hawaii,

but if it were, we submit, it would be worth it. We hope that you will have the opportunity

to come in and experience the satisfying individuality of American craftsmanship.

YOU'RE INVITED TO SHARE IN THE EXCITING

WORLD OF CRAFTS Surprise and excitement await you in

the dynamic world of crafts. It's a world where the appreciation of

beauty is a natural aspect of everyday l ife. . . not something that only happens in a museum.

To give you and your family an intimate introduction to this fascinating world, you are invited to become a member of the American Crafts Council.

Founded in 1943 to stimulate interest in American crafts, ACC numbers a national membership of some 33,000. Whether you're a professional with your own studio... an amateur who's just beginning... or an admirer who simply wants to watch and learn... the American Crafts Council has something spe-cial to offer you. Membership in the Museum of Contemporary Crafts

One of the most rewarding benefits of membership in ACC is joint membership in the Museum of Contemporary Crafts. Located in New York City, the museum serves as a showcase for the entire crafts community. Its exhibitions travel around the country, visiting leading cities, museums and art centers.

As a member of ACC, you're invited to the openings of all these shows, and enjoy free admission to every exhibit at the Museum itself. In addition, depending on the member-ship category you select, you'll also receive invitations to exhibition previews... copies of-museum catalogs... and folio-quality exhibi-tion brochures showing the work of today's leading craftsmen. Subscription to Craft Horizons

In addition to membership in the Museum, you will receive a full year's subscription to

Craft Horizons, the bi-monthly publication of ACC, regularly $3.75 per copy.

Craft Horizons is the leading magazine in contemporary crafts, and enjoys an interna-tional readership of 400,000 artists, teachers, collectors and connoisseurs.

Here, in beautiful color photographs, are the works of today's leading craft artists such as William Harper in enamel... Paul Marione in stained glass... Peter Voulkos in ceramics . . . Noguchi in paper.

On the purely practical side, a unique newsletter called Craft World brings you the news you need to know about jobs, grants, marketing opportunities and much more. Six issues of Craft World are bound into Craft Horizons, and six more come to you sepa-rately in alternate months.

Craft World is packed with information you can use. Shops that buy and sell crafts, new craft techniques, behind-the-scenes reports, people and places worth knowing. Plus the ACC Calendar of Events, regional craft news from around the country, marketing and media, and even more. Lew-cost group insurance

The American Crafts Council has arranged its own group insurance. Members and their families may take advantage of full major medical coverage... hospital indemnity pro-tection . . . and a unique plan that combines life insurance and disability coverage—all at low group rates. Worldwide crafts tours

You can explore crafts around the world, work and learn side by side with native craftsmen, on ACC's expertly guided tours. Upcoming tours will include West Africa,

Scandinavia and Czechoslovakia. Preferential prices en books

You also enjoy the privilege of enlarging your private library with books and catalogs from the Council's extensive offerings. These publications, which range from classic works on crafts and craftsmen to business guides and source directories, are available to you at preferential rates. Free use of ACC's unique library

You have unlimited access to the council's own research and information library on crafts and related subjects with extensive portfolios on practicing American craftsmen. You also enjoy a 20% discount on slide kit and film rentals from Your Portable Museum, a unique ACC service that gives you or your organization a close-up of the best in crafts. Other attractive benefits

Depending on the membership category you choose, you are eligible to receive invitations to gala openings. Free admission (or special member discount rates) to ACC regional events. Invitations to special lectures on crafts. Membership in the World Crafts Council. Free copies of the WCC quarterly bulletin. A vote in ACC elections. Tax-deductible membership

As a non-profit organization, the American Crafts Council needs your membership to continue its work of fostering excellence in American crafts.

To help us—and help yourself to all of the many benefits of association with ACC— send your membership application today. Just check the category you prefer, then return the coupon with your check. Your contribution is completely tax-deductible.
