MEDIA RELEASE BALLOTING OF BUMIPUTERA CONTRACTORS CLASS G1, G2 & G3 FOR THE KLANG VALLEY MRT PROJECT Kuala Lumpur, 30 January 2013: A balloting session for Bumiputera contractors Class G1 (formerly Class F), G2 (Class E) and G3 was held today, for the award of 44 work packages for the Klang Valley MRT Project Sungai Buloh-Kajang Alignment. The 44 work packages have a total value of RM19.5 million. These contracts form part of the Government’s target of achieving 43% participation of Bumiputera contractors in the nation’s largest infrastructure project. Today’s balloting is the second to be held by Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) and involved 541 applicants. The first was held at the end of last year where nine contractors were awarded with RM7.5 million worth of contracts. A total of 550 Bumiputera contractors were shortlisted last year after a vigorous screening process of more than 1,300 companies that applied. The companies were required to fulfill several criteria, including having a registered office in a district along the MRT Sungai Buloh- Kajag Alignment, having Bumiputera status, having valid licenses for the scope of work offered, and satisfying certain technical, track record and financial requirements. This screening process was conducted by the Entrepreneur Development Division under the Ministry of Works and also Unit Peneraju Agenda Bumiputera (Teraju). The Government’s Bumiputera agenda sets out a strategy to benefit small Bumiputera contractors so that they can participate in the MRT project. The agenda also hopes to promote capacity building in the country’s construction industry and to maximise participation by qualified Malaysian contractors.

The work scopes available for Bumiputera contractors Class G1, G2 and G3 are maintenance of
existing roads; surface drainage works; landscaping and turfing; road furniture; fencing and
gates; taxi and bus stand construction.
Successful Bumiputera contractors will undergo mandatory two-day training before
commencing with construction works. Modules for this training are prepared by the Pusat
Khidmat Kontraktor of the Ministry of Works, Institut Kerja Raya Malaysia (Ikram), Teraju and
MRT Corp.
MRT Corp will hold balloting for the award of contracts every quarter to cater to the needs for
the construction of the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line.
Construction of the 51 kilometre MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line is now in full swing and is
expected to be completed in 2016 and will commence operations in January 2017. Once
completed, the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line will have 31 stations, including seven built
underground.

About the MRT Project
MRT is a new rail transport system for the Klang Valley. It is part of the Government’s Greater
Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley’s National Key Economic Area (NKEA), under the Economic
Transformation Programme. The Sungai Buloh – Kajang Line runs for 51 kilometres, from the
north-west town of Sg Buloh to the south-east city town of Kajang. Upon completion, it will
comprise 31 stations, and serve 1.2 million people along the route. It will also have strategic
integration with the Klang Valley’s existing rail transport network, namely the LRT, Monorail and
KTM Komuter, as well as intra and inter-city bus routes. The end result will be better connectivity
