In Balch Springs, we are pleased and excited to celebrate the diversity

of our great city.

This includes celebrating Juneteenth, a tribute to the President

Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation ending of slavery in Texas.

Although the proclamation effectively ended slavery on January 1,

1863, it took over two years for it to be enacted in Texas. General

Gordon Granger and his troops arrived in Galveston, Texas one day

before to prepare for the installation. On June 19, 1865, he carried

out his mission of reading “General Order No. 3” for all to hear.

Each year millions of people - regardless of their race, creed, or color-

commemorate this day. Juneteenth is a Texas tradition that now spans

the globe.
