+Leisure

What is the meaning of Leisure? A period which you spend doing things other than your

work. A period of recuperation, or time to be filled after work was

done.

Importance of Leisure: Bring about a positive flow of energy in a person Help to refresh the mind

Faress Barraquias
Leisure activities are important to bring about a positive flow of energy in a person. These activities help to refresh the mind. There are various different recreational activities one can choose from to suit individual tastes. At the end of the day, how positive you feel is all that is important! (Lad, 2010)
Faress Barraquias
When one speaks about leisure time, it simply means a period which you spend doing things other than your work. Leisure activities are meant to de-stress a person and carry the attention away from work. This could mean type of recreation activity. The primary aim is to give you a sense of self (Lad, 2010).To keep it simple, everything we do that is not work, is leisure.

+Two types of recreation

Active recreation Is about engaging in adventure sports or outdoor

games Have physical resistance

Hiking Biking Skiing

Passive recreation Involves activities such as taking a walk on the

riverside, walking on the beach, strolling in parks or taking nature walks Very little or no physical resistance activities

Faress Barraquias
Both kinds of recreation have their own set of advantages. They create a positive mood, lighten your spirits and help you gain mental peace.

+Importance of Recreation

Devoting some time for recreation on a daily basis helps in the long run in maintaining health and achieving a peace of mind. Participate in some regular physical activity, play a sport or exercise. These recreational activities serve as a means of relaxation. Research has shown that recreation on a daily basis reduces risks of diabetes and hypertension, enhances physical and mental health and improves the quality of life. (Oak, 2010)

+Physical Activity

(CSEP, Health Canada, 1999)

Faress Barraquias
Physical activities are activities that get your body moving such as gardening, walking the dog, raking leaves, and taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Exercise is a form of physical activity that is specifically planned, structured, and repetitive such as weight training, tai chi, or an aerobics class.(National Institute on Aging, 2009)

+Keeping your mind sharp

Just like our body needs exercise, we need to exercise our minds.

Science spends a lot of time investigating what causes mental decline as we age, and not much on what things might prevent it. Now the health benefits of exercise appear to include keeping your mind sharp as well as your body fit. Many people think becoming senile as you age is unavoidable and while one in four older adults experiences some form of cognitive decline this isn't a part of healthy aging. What this work is telling us is that you can keep your mind sharp as you age but you need to plan now to do so.It's important to challenge your brain - give it a workout by taking up different things, enjoying hobbies and pursuing interests. There's no one mental exercise that's shown itself so much better than any other - anything that has your mind working is a good choice. But that's not all you should be doing.Being mentally active works best when you're living well - eating healthy, being active as much as you can, avoiding tobacco and other unhealthy substances while keeping those appointments for regular medical checkups and screenings."The take-home message from the study is, you can maintain your cognitive function in late life," explains study author Alexandra Fiocco, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, San Francisco."People are afraid they will experience cognitive decline as they age. But not everyone declines."In fact, this work raises the very real possibility that cognitive decline might even be preventable with the health benefits of exercise being wider than ever thought before.(Whilttaker, 2009)

LIFE

Faress Barraquias
Life is very complex as it is but it's very important to have a balance to enjoy life. What we do in our leisure time is a direct reflection of our capabilities. Seniors' well being is dependent on all aspects of their lives because at their stage in life, they are fragile.
