Balanced and Unbalanced Forces in the Real World

Service Project

Our Service Project

• We planned and created a bulletin board for the 8th grade science class.

• The students learned about balanced and unbalanced forces through the definitions of Newton’s Laws and Bernoulli’s Principle; but Mrs. Housley wanted them to see some real world examples of these forces.

• The bulletin board contains a definition, picture, and description for each law.

The Benefits

• The bulletin board has benefited the students by connecting their knowledge from science class with the real world examples. The pictures show that these forces exist in the every day world and they are not something they just need to memorize for the test.

The Preparation

• First, we had to research Newton’s laws and Bernoulli’s Principle to create real world situations that the students could understand.

• Once we knew the examples we were going to use, we came up with a design for the bulletin board and got approval from Mrs. Housley.

• We found most of the pictures from coloring books and then copied, colored, and cut them out. We typed and printed out the definitions, examples, and labels.

• Then we stapled them all to the bulletin board.

The Supplies

• Our service project was very inexpensive. The only thing we had to purchase were three coloring books for $1.99 each.

• We used the school’s di-cut to make the letters for the title.

• Mrs. Housley provided the border and background.

The Impact

• Our bulletin board is both colorful and informational. Students were able to expand their knowledge of Newton’s and Bernoulli’s laws and the school now has a more appealing bulletin board for all to see. Since our bulletin board is in the hallway, students in the whole school are able to see it and it may even allow younger students to become excited about what they will learn in 8th grade. Mrs. Housley has received many positive comments about the bulletin board.
