Market Report up until January 2013Exchange Rates• Against the $, sterling opened the month at 1.585 and is at 1.61 as of 10th December.• Against the €, sterling opened the month at 1.241 and ended at 1.244 as of 10th December.
Crude Oil and FuelCrude oil prices recovered, supported by the persistent concerns over the geopolitical instability in the Middle East and despite the global demand, forecast for Q4 being lowered by 0.29m bbl/d. Prices were up slightly for both by 1%. Brent crude oil on ICE London and light sweet crude on NYMEX US. Petrol prices increased in both the US and Europe. However, fuel prices in Europe continued to fall with both heavy oil and diesel down by 2%.
Fats and OilPalm oil prices fell in Rotterdam and Malaysia 6% to their lowest level in two years as production was forecast to reach a record 53.3m tonnes in 2012/13, and demand was low. In contrast to palm oil, soyabean oil prices were steady on CBOT (0%) and rose in Rotterdam 2%, supported by tighter supply and demand balance. World soyabean oil consumption is expected to outpace production in 2012/13 with ending stocks set to decline by 22% year-on-year. In Rotterdam, sunflower oil increased 2%, but rapeseed oil prices were down 2%. For lauric oils, coconut oil fell 9% in both Rotterdam and the Philippines, with palm kernel oil also down 5%. European virgin olive oil prices continued to decline 6% supported by improved expectations for the Spanish harvest.
WheatMaize futures rose only marginally on CBOT as upward revisions to the world production forecasts for 2012/13 were offset by strong global feed demand. Milling wheat futures were up on LIFFE Paris by 3% and CBOT US 2%, as world wheat production forecasts for 2012/13 were further revised down in November, driven by lower expected output in Australia. Feed wheat prices were also up in LIFFE London by 7% and Oat prices rose in the EU by 2%.
DairyEU spot fresh milk prices rose again last month by 2% as supply remains tight. EU milk production growth is expected to slow to 1.3% in 2012 (from 2.0% in 2011). Butter prices rose by again by 3% in Europe, also due to tight supplies. By mid-November, EU private storage aid (PSA) stocks had fallen to 53,000 tonnes, down from 133,000 tonnes in mid-August. UK cream prices were also up 3%.
In Western Europe, butter oil prices rose 4% while whey powder fell 1%. EU SMP prices fell 3% on average as EU production is forecast to increase 8% to 1.27m tonnes in 2012 and by a further 2% in 2013. However, SMP prices continued to be supported by buoyant world export demand in New Zealand. EU WMP prices were unchanged as was cheddar cheese.
EggWholesale egg prices eased slightly in the Netherlands 1% but rose in London 2%. High feed prices remain a concern. In the EU, liquid egg white prices rose 2% while liquid egg yolk prices were unchanged.
Dried FruitThe sultana market has been very quiet over the last few weeks with limited quantities traded on the bourse. Prices have remained stable at around TL 3,000 per m/t for No.9 raw material. There is still a question mark over the quality of the fruit this year; some lower quality 9’s with a high level of mouldy berries are being sold at more competitive prices. Farmers are not bringing any significant quantity to the bourse to try and prevent prices easing any further. With low demand and limited quantities available there is a stand-off. The general view is that this will continue until mid-January at least and then we may see some firm interest from export demand and local demand from alcohol manufactures. It is likely that prices could firm as we move into February/March with some increased demand but a sharp increase is not envisaged.
Following the record low 2012 Greek Currants crop, of less than 20,000 m/t (2011 crop 23,000 m/t), remaining unsold stock is now minimal. The Greek industry no longer produces (or at least, certainly does not publish) any statistical information regarding the supply and sales of Currants, making it difficult to accurately assess variation in export performance from season to season. It seems certain, however, that in spite of an amount of resistance from key export markets there will be little, if any, carry over at the end of the 2012 crop. This is in spite of the fact that raw material prices in Euros have risen by more than 20% compared to last season. The impact of this on the UK has been reduced only by the improved Sterling/Euro exchange rate compared to the same time last year.
