BAI JERBAI WADIA LIBRARY
INTRODUCTION
The building of the Bai Jerbai Wadia Library, comprising of two floors, was completed in May
1929 with a munificent donation from the Wadia brothers. The library was named after their
mother Bai Jerbai Wadia Library. It is one of the three main buildings of the college.

COLLECTION The Bai Jerbai Wadia Library has a rich collection of books. There are nearly 2, 29,763 books and several research journals on the ground floor. Braille books section is also a part of the library. We have rare books in Print form, as also in the form of manuscripts, written on palm leaves and silk cloth in our collection. A lot of care is taken to preserve these books in the library in a good condition. Preservation of manuscripts and rare books is partly finished. Sheaf catalogue- the oldest form of catalogue is also available and preserved. Over the years, many research scholars and book-lovers have donated a large number of books from their personal collection to the library e.g. Wrangler R. P. Paranjpe, Dr. G. S. Mahajani, Prin. S. V. Kogekar, Prof. R. S. Joag, Prof. D.D Wadekar and many others… All this has made the library a valuable treasure-trove.
The library is also blessed with a remarkable collection of statues and posters, dedicated to outstanding national leaders and educationalists. There are old trophies, cups and medals received by the college on different occasions. All these are displayed with due honour in the library. The library is fully automated /computerized. With the advancement of technology, new forms of books/journals such as e-books, e-journals, databases are also part of the library collection. Library has a valuable collection of archives as well as current research. EMINENT VISITORS Eminent figures like Swatantrayaveer Savarkar, Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru, Dr.
Radhakrishan, Dr. S. R. Ranganathan (Father of Library Science) have graced the library with
their presence. In recent times, the Honourable former President of India, Smt Pratibhatai Patil
and the Honourable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis have visited the
Library. Ex-students visit the library with their family to cherish their old memories too.

IMPORTANT EVENTS IN THE HISTORY OF LIBRARY
1907 : The collection of Raosaheb V.N. Mandlik was donated to the library by his son Shri. N. V Mandlik 1922 : Fund collection by students for erection of the bust of Lokmanya Tilak in the Library 1931 : The freedom fighter and the then student of Fergusson College Mr. V.B. Gogate attempted assassination of British Governor Mr. Earnest Hotson (22nd July) 1938 : The Deccan Education Society set up a bust of Namdar Gopal Krishna Gokhale in the library (13th June)
1955 : The Deccan Education Society constructed the first extension to the
library for stacking books. This construction was done partly with
government aid
1974 : Lord Balantrae, the grandson of Sir James Fergusson visited the library
(16th March)
1974 : Library received Rs.20,000 as a generous endowment to set up the
"Prof.V.G.Kale Text Book library" (August)
1982 : The second extension to the library was constructed.
1985 : Visits of eminent personalities on the occasion of Fergusson College
Centenary year.
1995 : The erection of the bust of Principal G. G. Agarkar, well-known social
reformer & founder of Deccan Education Society.
1999 : The well-known Kotecha family(Industrialists) donated the valuable Osho

Collection to the library
2002 : The library celebrated the British Centenary of Shri R. S. Parkhi who was
the first librarian of this library and a well- known library science scholar
2010 : The college established a UGC Network Centre for Students, NETLAB
2012 : Learning Centre started for Visually Impaired Students
2013 : Established DST-FIST centre with 20 Computers – Internet facility
2014 : Grants from National Archives of India for Preservation of rare Books and Manuscripts.
2014 : Fully bar coded, automated and available on OPAC to the users.
2014 : library arranged in two sections-
1) Books published before 1950 AND
2) Books published after 1950
2014 : Proper Stock verification done
2014 : On World Books Day, the proprietors of the renowned Continental Publications donated
75 books in memory of their father (23rd April)

READING HALL The entire first floor of the Library serves as a Reading Hall for students and is spacious enough to comfortably accommodate around 400 students at a time. This is perhaps one of the largest Reading Halls in Maharashtra. On the ground floor, there are 7 cubicles for teachers. Teachers can read books and journals. Computers with internet facility are also available to teachers. They can search for books through OPAC, e-resources, INFLIBNET N-List, data bases. UGC NETWORK RESOURCES CENTRE- Netlab and DST – FIST Lab
There are two Net Labs with 40 computers and printers available to the students/users. Full
library data, e-journals, data-bases and e-resources are accessible to the users from this
Netlab. These two Netlabs are situated on the first floor.
USERS
The library caters to students, teachers, scholars, research workers and senior citizens including
scholars from abroad. People with different interests such as students of Architecture who
come to study the magnificent architecture of the library building, different subject experts
who come looking for rare books as also library science students, visit the library. Thus BJW
library is unique in its structure, the huge spectrum of books and different services.

SERVICES
1. Free internet and e-resource centre-- There are two Netlabs having 20 computers with a
printer each. Students/users can use this facility free of cost.
2. OPAC- Online Public Access Catalogue is an important tool to search the title/author
from the data of the library. Every single book, journal, non-print material are stored in
the data-base of the library.
3. E-journals and e-books-information available in electronic form is accessible to the
students from the library.
4. BOOK EXHIBITION- Library organizes and displays book collections of freedom fighters,
social reformers and famous personalities such as Shivaji Maharaj, Veer Savarkar,
5. INFORMATION LITERACY PROGRAMME- Library arranges orientation programs for
students and faculty members to acquaint them with the library collection , the section-
wise arrangement and services available at the library.
6. NEWS PAPER CUTTINGS AND CLIPPINGS- Information related to the college, the library,
the staff and students are displayed on the notice board and then filed.
7. NEW BOOK SECTION-New addition to the library collection is displayed and the lists are
circulated and displayed on the notice board.
8. INTER LIBRARY LENDING SERVICES- Meant for students, staff members or researchers
who need to refer to a book from another library for a short time. B J Wadia library has
a tie-up with other libraries for the purpose and enables this kind of inter-library loan
facility.

LIBRARY RULES:
1. -The Library is open to BONAFIDE students Only 2. -Students are expected to wear the IDENTITY CARD while entering the Library and I Card
valid for the current academic year only. 3. -Enter after registering their name in the GATE REGISTER. 4. -SILENCE has to be maintained in the Library. 5. -Eatables are not allowed in the Library. 6. -Book issued from the Reading hall counter should be returned while leaving the Library. 7. -Library authority is not responsible for any loss or damage to personal property left in
the library. 8. -Misuse of Library material or misbehavior will result in expelling the student from the
Library and strict disciplinary action will be taken by the College authorities. 9. - Media, Photography and Video Recording are strictly prohibited in the Library. 10. -Mobile phones should be switched-off in the Library. 11. -Students should keep all their belongings at the counter (without money or other
valuables) 12. -Identity Card and Library Card are not transferable. 13. –Smoking/ Chewing Tobacco etc is strictly prohibited.
Rules for Book Lending Facility:
Book Lending facility is available to all bonafide students. They have to fill the form in the Library for getting Library Cards. One book will be issued on one Library Ticket for 8 days.
Junior College students - 1 Library Card Under Graduate Students - 2 Library Cards Post Graduate Students - 3 Library Cards Students should inform the Librarian in writing about the loss of a Library Ticket/Card. A new ticket will be issued on proper verification and on paying Rs.25/- Procedure of issuing – Students should show the Identity Card, Library Card and book at the issue counter and write his/her name on the book card.
1. A book will be issued for 8 days. For unclaimed book, the period can be extended.
2. The borrowed book should be returned on or before the last date given on the date slip. A fine will be levied on late books as per the rules.
3. Students are responsible for the book borrowed from the library. 4. The Librarian can recall any book at any time. 5. The Students should check the book thoroughly for missing pages, Chapters,
Pictures etc. while borrowing the book and if found damaged, kindly inform the Library staff.

Books Issuing Procedure
Students and staff are given Identity cards with unique number written in Barcode form. At
the same time, every book has a unique barcode number. With the help of Barcode Scanner,
books are issued to a member within a fraction of seconds. There is no need to fill the issue
slip or sign.
