With so many variations in large warehouses and industrialbuildings, Big Ass Fans has developed an 8 ft. (2m) enclosed vertical fan. When high-volume/low-speed Big Ass Fans cannotbe installed on the ceiling because of obstructions, or when a movable fan is desired, the newly-developed vertical version is the preferred way to provide a comfortable environment forworkers. This fan is also used in agricultural applications, including horse barns, hog barns and poultry facilities.
Big Ass Fans are available with VESDA® (Very Early Warning Smoke Detection Apparatus) by Xtralis®. In addition, previously installed Big Ass Fans can be retrofitted to include VESDA. Models eligible for VESDA system include Powerfoil™, PowerfoilPlus™, Wickerbill, and Standard fans.
The VESDA smoke detection system is a proven solution in high volume spaces, making it the perfect complement for a Big Ass Fan. VESDA works with the Big Ass Fan by detecting smoke at the earliest stage, and then sending a signal to automatically stop the fan. This shutdown feature is designed specifically for Big Ass Fans to be used in facilities equipped with Early Suppression Fast Response (ESFR) sprinkler systems. The only proven solution on the market verified by third party testing.
VESDA uses a series of pipes to actively draw air through sample points and transports the air back to a single VESDA detector for analysis. This detector looks for smoke particles by laser based light scattering and reports when smoke is present in the area.
VESDA Provides:Earliest possible warning of an imminent fire hazard™ Complete shutdown of fan system at the earliest sign of smoke, long ™ before ESFR systems activateTime to initiate a flexible, appropriate response™ The only proven solution on the market verified by third party testing™

In Figure 1, the fan moves air downward in a column equal to thefan's diameter. At standard speed, a20ft. (6m) Big Ass Fan creates a gentlecurrent of air 9ft. (2.7m) deep. The airthen redirects outward in all directions.
As illustrated in Figure 4, multiple fanswork in harmony to create pressurefronts that facilitate the convection-likecycle of airflow. This ensures adequateand effective airflow over larger areas.
In Figure 2, outward air movement continues until reaching verticalobstructions. Air then redirects upward, pulled by the fan's inflow current andpushed by the ensuing airflow. Big AssFans move air over an area six times itsdiameter in every direction.
In Figure 3, this inflow causes air toclimb, plateau and turn inward. As partof an inertia-driven system, air is redirected downward as part of convection-like current. Here, the 20ft.(6m) fan is affecting 14,400 sq. ft. of air.

Hint:Place fans in your highest trafficareas and remember the maximumair flow is distributed below the tipsof the fan and spreads out from there.
If you want to move air over a workstation, place the fan so that the tipsare above the area. The best way to dothis is to hang your fans in aisleways, between several work stations.
The bottom line: Fewer fans and better coverage.

The size of the fan used isgoverned by the area to betreated. Normally, bigger isbetter. A 24 ft. (7.3m) diameterfan is a good choice in largeropen areas such as shippingor receiving docks.
When choosing a location for a fan, noteobstructions. Air fromthe fan will moveunder conveyors andthrough open racks, but will be impeded by a stack of boxes or a wall.
12ft Powerfoil™10ft Powerfoil™28 Fan Placement Example #1
Though some customers do not mind,it is relatively easy to avoid having themoving airfoil cast a shadow onto thefloor. A 12 ft. (3.6m) diameter fan will fitwithin a 10 ft.x10 ft. (3.0mx3.0m) lightinggrid with room to spare, and an 18 ft.(5.5m) diameter fan will easily fit into a15 ft. x15 ft. (4.5mx4.5m) lighting grid.(Hint: Use the Pythagorean Theorem)
The 6 ft. (1.83m) caged fan can bemounted less than 3 ft. (0.91m) from theroof deck, making it a natural choicefor mezzanines and aisleways.
Remember, a fan moves air over a 360ºarea. Locate fans at aisle intersectionsin order to optimize air movement andminimize the number of fans required.
When locating a fan over an aisle, makesure the tip of the blades are within theaisle to maximize useful air flow.

12ft Powerfoil™10ft Powerfoil™34 Frequently Asked QuestionsHow much is the energy cost to operate a Big Ass Fan? QBig Ass Fans are extremely energy efficient costing less than 10 A ¢ (US) per hour to operate. In addition, by circulating the air, the fans actually save money on heating and cooling bills.
Won't the fan just bring the hotter air from the top of the building down on people? QDuring the warmer months, the fans are run at higher speeds to circulate the air within a facility. This circulation results in an even temperature Athroughout the area covered by the fans. Even though the actual temperature is not lowered, people are more comfortable because they are cooled by the breeze created by the fans.
During the cooler months, the fans are run at lower speeds to push warm air down from the ceiling to the floor without creating a cooling breeze.
Can/should we run the fans 24/7? QYes, they are used 24/7 by many of our customers. A
I can't mount my fan using the methods shown in the Big Ass Fans Installation Guide. What should I do? QIf you are not able to utilize the mounting methods shown in the manual, you should obtain the recommendations of a structural engineer before Ainstalling them. This will assure a safe installation.
What is the ideal height above the floor to hang a fan? Q(the following does not apply to the PowerfoilPlus)First, it is important to understand how a Big Ass Fan moves air. A
The fan begins by pushing air straight down to the floor. The air is then distributed over a larger area when it reaches the floor and is forced outward in all directions. When considering ideal fan height, the important thing to remember is that the lower the fan is hung, the faster its airflow will be upon reaching the floor. As a result, the airflow coverage area will be greater.
With that being said, we have many fans hung at 50+ ft (15+ m) above the floor that still provide generous airflow.
Also, keep in mind that for safety reasons, fans should not be hung lower than 10 ft (3.05 m) (when measured from airfoils).
So what is the ideal height to hang a PowerfoilPlus? QThe PowerfoilPlus behaves differently than our other fans. Along with pushing air straight down, the PowerfoilPlus also distributes air at a 45° Aangle from the tips of the airfoils. So in order to achieve maximum coverage area, PowerfoilPlus fans should be installed in larger areas and at greater distances from the floor.
How much space is required above the fan? QTo provide maximum airflow, the fan should not be placed too close to the ceiling. The minimum amount of space needed between the fan Aand the ceiling depends on the size of the fan. (note: space between fan and ceiling can include roof support structure as long as air is free to circulate). Big Ass Fans recommends the following amount of space between the fan and the ceiling:
Fan Size Space Needed Above Fan
8-12 ft 3 ft (0.9 m)*
14-18 ft 4 ft (1.2 m)*
20-24 ft 5 ft (1.5 m)**Add additional 2 ft for PowerfoilPlus™ fans.
Fans that are installed closer to the ceiling deck than the recommended distance may not achieve optimum performance.
How much clearance is needed for the Big Ass Fans foils? QAll fans must be installed to allow airfoils a minimum clearance of 2 A ’ (61 cm) away from any obstructions (lighting, cranes, sprinklers, etc).
How much does one of those things weigh? QThe weight of the fan depends upon its size and design. Our smallest fan, the Pivot, weighs 161 lbs (73 kg). Our largest fan, the 24' (7.3 m) APowerfoilPlus, weighs 330 lbs (150 kg).
12ft Powerfoil™10ft Powerfoil™ 35Frequently Asked Questions (cont.)How do I reverse the fan? QThe fans are not intended to be reversed. Just like the wings of an airplane, the fans' airfoils are designed such that they are only efficient Aturning in one direction (counter-clockwise when viewed from the floor). It is precisely this innovative design that allows Big Ass Fans to move such large volumes of air.
Instead of running the fans in different directions during the warmer and cooler months, the fans should be run at different speeds. During the warmer months, the fans should be run higher speeds to circulate air and provide a cooling breeze. During the cooler months, the fans should be run at lower speeds to push warmer air down from the ceiling to the floor without creating a cooling breeze.
When I turn the fan on it moves backwards then forward before starting to run. What's wrong? Q This is normal and does not indicate a problem. This occurs on fans with controls that feature a reversing switch. A
What supply voltage is required to power the fan? QBig Ass Fans can operate at a range of voltages that varies depending on the fan model. The majority of Big Ass Fans can operate at 100-125V A1 Phase, 200-250V 1 Phase, 200-250V 3 Phase, and 400-480V 3 Phase.
Can Big Ass Fans operate on 277 volts? QNo. 277 volt power is used exclusively for lighting. A
What are the electrical current requirements for the fan? QThe FLA (full-load amp) ratings vary depending on the size and voltage of the fan. Consult the Product Catalog or the Installation Guide Aincluded with your fan for FLA ratings.
What kind of wire should be used for the motor leads? QAlways use wire that is rated for 600V and 75 to 90 degrees C in metallic conduit. For applications not requiring shielded cable, use THHN or ATHNW. If shielded cable is necessary, RHH or RHW-2, Beldon 29501 through 29507, and Shawflex 2ACD or 3ACD are all good choices.
Why can't I use solid core wire or MC cable for the motor leads? QBecause the fan will not run satisfactorily on that kind of wire. Its characteristics are not suited to this type of use for several reasons. BAF does Anot approve the use of solid core wire or MC cable and it can affect the warranty on a fan.
Do I have to use the fan control? Why can't we just wire the fan through an on/off switch? QBig Ass Fan-supplied controls must be used with all fans. These controls do more than simply turning the fan on and changing its speed. Their Aprimary function is to protect the fan's motor and gear reducer from destructive electrical and mechanical forces. The fan controls prevent motor damage if the fan is run on a higher current than it is capable of tolerating. Likewise, the controls start and stop the fan gradually thus preventing damage to the gear reducer. These protections are required for safe fan operation and to maintain the fan's warranty.
I have a three-fan control. Is it possible to control each fan individually? QNo. Multiple fans cannot be controlled individually when connected to one fan controller. To control the fans individually, each fan would need its Aown dedicated controller.
I have a single-phase fan control, but the motor is three-phase only? Will this discrepancy cause a problem? QNo. The fan control is able to convert single-phase input to three-phase output. A
Why are the motors set up for 460-volts when I ordered 230-volt controls? QThey are tested by the manufacturer using 460-volts so they are left in that configuration. When 230-volt or 115-volt controls are used, the Amotors must be re configured for 230-volt operation. This should only take about five minutes.
I ordered my fan with 460-volt controls but have found that I don't have 460-volt service where the fan will be installed. What can you Qdo?It is always best to make sure that the control you are ordering is compatible with the available power near the intended location for the fan. We Acan exchange controls but apply a restocking charge and freight charges. Exchanging the fan controls is likely to delay the installation.
We have a problem with employees changing the fan's speed setting. Is there a way to limit access to the controls? QYes. We offer lockable covers for the fan controller™s rotary on/off switch and speed potentiometer. These covers limit access of the fan controls Ato those in possession of a key.
12ft Powerfoil™10ft Powerfoil™36 Frequently Asked Questions (cont.)Should we use the red and yellow main power switch to turn the fan on and off? QNO. The black two or three position switch MUST be used for the normal on and off function. Using the red and yellow main power switch for Anormal on and off functions will quickly cause severe damage to the fan.
Can I feed multiple fan controls from one branch circuit? QYes, as long as that circuit is sized correctly. Each fan control is internally fused and the circuit must be sized for the total of the individual Ainternal fuses. For example, three fan controls, each of which has internal fusing at 10 amps, must be on a 30 amp circuit.
Can we interface the fan with our fire suppression system? QYes. Big Ass Fans can provide a schematic showing the correct way to interface the fan with the fire suppression system. Big Ass Fans are also Aavailable with VESDA® (Very Early Warning Smoke Detection Apparatus) by Xtralis®. VESDA works with the fan by detecting smoke at the earliest stages of a fire, and then sending a signal to automatically shut down the fan.
What kind of maintenance is recommended for the fans? QBig Ass Fans require very little maintenance. The annual maintenance inspection includes retorquing all fasteners, checking for missing or Adamaged components, inspecting wiring connections, and dusting the fan and controller. For more information, see the Installation Guide included with your fan.
Do I need to change the oil in the gear reducer? QNo. Servicing the gear reducer with lubricating oil is not required. It is designed to last for life. A
