I hope you all had a very good week. I have met with your teachers and review your students’ NWEA scores
and their class performances together. I have created your students’ learning path on their Study Island accounts.
Your teachers will meet with your students and set achievable long- and short-term goals with them. Students will
also have weekly blue-ribbon goals to achieve.
Also, our intervention team is diligently working on supporting our students who need extra help. Those, who
scored below 50th percentile on the NWEA tests, will have supplementary I-ready lessons to work on in class and at
home. I-ready will prepare student specific lessons based on their needs and progress monitor students on a regular
basis. Your teachers will be in touch with you about your child’s progress.
In addition to above, in elementary classes, we extend our gifted and advanced service via enrichment
activities which are based on real word problem solving projects that stimulates high order critical thinking skills. This
project is also available for our e-learning students.

Character Education
This month’s character trait is
RESPONSIBILITY!
• Responsibility means you
do the things you are
supposed to do and accept
the results of your actions.
• A responsibility: something
you are expected to do
• Being responsible: doing
the things you are
supposed to do
• Accepting responsibility:
taking the praise or the
blame for something you
have done
We will be watching our
students closely to see who can
lead by example and display
respect all year long. They will
be rewarded with praise and
Tiger Bucks!
8th Grade Graduation
We are currently looking for
TWO 8th grade students to serve
on this year’s committee! If you
are interested: https://forms.gle/NHTVHTBJUJ8Jbs3C6
Starting now there will be regular raffles for great prizes that families can purchase tickets for to support the DAS PVO and various school needs. This month we are kicking off the raffle with a great prize package of
For more details please go to the following link:
www.daspvo.org/raffle Tickets are $5 each. They can be purchased until October 16th.
There will be a live Facebook (DASPVO) drawing on October 23rd.
4th and 5th Grades – We have been discussing mosquitoes,
bats, and their role in the control of the West Nile Virus. We
will be making mosquito traps so please have your online
student collect: 1 2-liter bottle, 1 gram of yeast, and ¼ cup of
brown sugar.
And the face-to-face students will need to only bring in a 2
liter bottle.
All 2nd – 5th grade teachers and I are implementing an enrichment activity for the gifted and
advanced students. This includes the virtual students as well as the face-to-face students.
The packets are all Model Eliciting Activities (MEAs) which are realistic problem-solving
activities aligned to multiple subject-area standards. MEAs are open-ended,
interdisciplinary problem-solving activities that are meant to reveal students’ thinking
about the concepts embedded in these realistic activities. MEAs resemble engineering
problems because students work in teams to apply their knowledge of science and
mathematics to solve an open-ended problem, while considering constraints and tradeoffs
and clearly documenting their thought process.

Sixth and Seventh Grade Math News from Ms. Chapin ([email protected])
This week in math, the sixth grade math students studied operations on fractions, including addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Next week, they will master division. The key with adding and subtracting is lining up the decimals and making sure to regroup (carry or borrow) as needed. With multiplication and division, they need to keep track of the place value. Decimals are like fractions in terms of operations.
In 7th grade math, the students learned even more real-world applications of percentages, focusing on financial skills. They studied tips, taxes, discounts, mark-ups and mark-downs, commissions, and simple interest. We discussed important aspects of investments and loans with the caveat that compound interest is more common in real life but more complicated to calculate.
Any skills that students need to review on IXL are encouraged to be reviewed and improved before the test as a study technique that will also improve their scores.
Students’ IXL skills for the last week will be checked Oct. 5. For 6th grade math, the chapter 3 test will be on Oct. 9. For 7th grade math, the chapter 3 test will be on Oct. 13. Seventh grade math will start chapter 3 on Monday, covering integers and operations with negative numbers. I’ve posted the chapter reviews on Study Island to help students prepare.
Any students who are absent are welcome to join the e-Learning classes, as I have those for every class, too. 7th grade Advanced meets virtually 9:20-10:05, 7th grade meets 10:08-10:53, 6th grade math meets 11:48-12:32, and 6th grade advanced meets 1:05-1:50. The only one with a different class time than normal is 6th grade, but that is something to be aware of if your 6th grade math student is absent. All of the work can be done from home online, so hopefully he or she feels well enough to stay pretty much caught up with the class.
THIS WEEK NEXT WEEK Honors English should have a copy of the 1818 edition of Frankenstein by now. The class finished analyzing some significant quotes that covered major themes in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. On Friday, students took a cumulative test on the whole novel.
8th Grade finished discussing major ideas in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. On Friday, they began reading, “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe. The class examined the text to see features of Gothic Literature and how Poe employs the device of the unreliable narrator.
7th Grade read through chapter six of Ender’s Game. On Wednesday, all classes took a quiz on chapters three through five.
Next week 7th grade will have a quiz on chapters six and seven of Ender’s Game on Tuesday. Honors English will begin reading Frankenstein and have a quiz on the first four letters and chapter one on Friday.
8th Grade will begin looking at various essays about horror and will study an H.P. Lovecraft short story.
REFLECTION “I don't think that writing, real writing, has much to do with affirming belief--if anything it causes rifts and gaps in belief which make belief more complex and more textured, more real. Good writing unsettles, destroys both the author and the reader.”-Brian Evenson
Announcements
• Students should do fifteen minutes of

Remember, homework for face to face students will be online unless you or your student and I have discussed an exception. Note: This only applies to homework, classwork will still include paper for face to face. If you have any confusion or difficulty with accessing online work or turning it in via DASconnect, please reference the video posted last week on my DASconnect page or see it here. If you still have issues or questions, please feel free to contact me through email. If you turned something in late, notify me on DASconnect
For my online students, please use care to ensure you arrive to the classes zoom meeting on time. I understand that sometimes there are technical issues, but some of my online classes have half or more of the students routinely showing up after the start time. Also ensure that your name on Zoom is your actual name. I do not need to see nicknames or clever puns. For the security and safety of my students I have to ensure that everyone allowed into my Zoom meetings are students who belong there. This means that if a name is not one of my students, they will not be permitted to enter.
Monday will be a quiz for all my students so make sure that my 7th graders study the information from our notes on the rock cycle, and continental drift. 8th grade please make sure to study up on atomic theory and structure, and biology, please study up on atomic structure and reading the boxes on the periodic table.
Science news in the world. Neanderthals are at Risk
Recent studies have indicated that humans who have a higher than average percentage of neanderthal DNA are at increased risk for COVID-19. Neanderthals are a subspecies of Homo sapien (human) who were wiped out thousands of years ago, but there is significant evidence that early humans interbred with them as evidenced by the small percentage of their DNA present in current human DNA, which is higher than average in people whose ancestors are from certain regions of the world.
