Welcome New Faculty Dr. Laszlo Horvath, Assistant Professor of Practice Before moving to Virginia Tech, Dr. Horvath received a Master of Science in Wood Engineering and a Master of Science in Engineering Management in 2007 from the University of West Hungary. During his education, his research focused on engineering and business aspects of wood manufacturing and wood structural design. In 2010, Dr. Horvath received a Ph.D. in Forest Biomaterials from North Carolina State University. His Ph.D. research focused on the effect of chemical content and composition on micromechanical properties of genetically engineered wood, micromechanical finite element modeling of lignocellulosic cell wall, and the use of vibrational spectroscopy in plant research. Currently, he is focusing on the development of a new packaging curriculum at the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products at Virginia Tech.

Welcome New Faculty Dr. Young Teck Kim, Assistant Professor of Practice Dr. Kim's works are strongly related to “industrial problem solving” and “new system developments" in the areas of biodegradable & plastic polymers, sustainable packaging, smart packaging in the flexible & rigid systems, and food & health care packaging using various analytical instruments and noble technologies. He has successfully developed new sustainable packaging systems based on noble and creative technologies such as nano-tech, inclusion complex tech and multilayer technique. From these successes, he was awarded or filed several patents in the core areas of packaging science and analytical chemistry. Packaging & food chemistry, biopolymer chemistry and analytical chemistry are major backgrounds in his research. Currently, sustainable packaging material development and smart packaging (biosensor/quality indicator system) are major on-going project areas. He is interested in utilizing various biodegradable polymers which are originated from both nature and synthetic reactions. He is also focusing on teaching and developing various packaging science curriculum at Virginia Tech. B.S. - Korea University, 1997 M.S. - Korea University, 1999 Ph.D. - Clemson University, 2005

Departing Faculty

Dr. Jim Berkson, Leader, National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS)

Combining the expertise of National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) biologists and the Virginia Tech (VT) Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences, the NMFS–VT RTR Program is the first of its kind in the country. The Program has three objectives, as captured in its name, RTR: Recruiting: To recruit top undergraduates into the field of fisheries population dynamics and careers with NMFS. Training: To present continuing education courses for NMFS employees. Research: To conduct population dynamics and stock assessment research in support of the NMFS mission in a unique collaboration of undergraduates, graduate students, post-doctoral associates, university faculty, and NMFS biologists. NMFS has provided in excess of $250,000 per year to operate the new Program, which will soon support 8 employees. The Program has created a highly successful recruiting program and a highly productive research program, bringing together a unique collaboration of university and federal scientists. The Program is the model for a new generation of cooperative research programs nationwide. The Program is bringing top graduate students, funding, jobs, and exciting research opportunities to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Virginia Tech has become a Training Center for the nation’s marine agencies. As a result of Virginia Tech hosting the Program, Virginia is playing a greater role in the research and sustainable management of economically important living marine resources.

The CMI has been working with the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Wetlands Inventory program for several years. In 2009, CMI started a project working with 3 regions of the US Fish and Wildlife Service to update the National Wetlands Inventory on coastal, and some interior, wildlife refuges from Maine to Texas. 2011-2012 Challenges/Opportunities • Undergraduate Enrollment Growth is key to our future as a college. • Moving degrees and names through governance is our key

opportunity/challenge for the academic year. • Decisions regarding the opportunity with water are forthcoming; how can

we best position our interests in water to benefit the college and campus?

• Decisions regarding 1115/1116 Seeking Sustainability courses approved

in governance a year ago – and mix with NR 1114 Introduction to Renewable Natural Resources and the new first year experience course need to be revisited. Sustainability continues to resonate well with undergraduate students interests

• Strategic focus on enrollment, recruiting, transfers, university studies students

Structure of the Budget of the College

• We will continue to see pressure on Agency 229 with expected reductions in federal formula support. This will challenge us moving forward. We must reduce our reliance on Agency 229 funds by increased reliance on Agency 208 monies. This will require us to show demand for students, generate increased weighted student credit hours, and increase graduating numbers.

• We must work to balance the Agency 229 proportion of funding among the three department reliant on these funds.

• We will see increased reliance on development gifts and sponsored research moving forward.

Broad College Strategy

• We will begin strategic planning in late winter/early spring, coincident with the effort already begun at the University level. At that time we will begin work on a process and a written document to create…A Path Forward for CNRE

• We will use the results of the branding initiative to begin to position our identity, message, and college brand throughout our mission areas

• Continue our efforts to build capacity for our development activities

• Continue to demonstrate the demand and need for our courses, expertise, engagement activities; continue to demonstrate the need for financial resources
