Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser; an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Shows are at 7 p.m. $10. 423-392-8427, www.kingsporttheatre.org • AUG. 7-8: Storybox Unscripted Theater is on stage at Barter Stage II, Abingdon, Va. at 11 p.m. A night of improvised theater with “Storybox” takes suggestions from the audience which form the basis for a fully improvised play — a character-focused, vibrant mixture of comedy and drama, never to be repeated. $12. 276- 628-3991, www.bartertheatre.com • CLOSING AUG. 8: “Southern Fried Nuptials” is on stage at Barter Theatre, Abingdon, Va. The only thing funnier than a Southern funeral is a Southern wedding. The charmingly funny Frye family is back, and this time they are going to get married. Or maybe not? The engagement of Attie VanLeer and Harline Frye has been on again, off again more times than a drunken frat boy on a mechanical bull. Now half the town has been invited, the dress has been fitted, the flowers have been ordered, and the gifts are piling up. Will they or won’t they? You’ll have to find out in this hysterical hit comedy from the authors of “Southern Fried Funeral.” 276- 628-3991, www.bartertheatre.com • CLOSING AUG. 8: “The Marvelous Wonderettes” is on Barter Stage II, Abingdon, Va. This musical smash takes you to the 1958 Springfield High School prom where we meet The Wonderettes, four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts. Experience their lives and loves, as the girls perform such classic ‘50s and ‘60s songs as “Lollipop,” “Dream Lover,” “Stupid Cupid,” “Lipstick on Your Collar,” “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me,” “It’s My Party,” and more than 20 other hits. 276-628-3991, www.bartertheatre.com • CLOSING AUG. 9: “Mary Poppins” is on Barter Theatre’s main stage, Abingdon, Va. Known by children of all ages, “Mary Pop- pins” is the story of a mysterious nanny who magically appears at the Banks’ household to care for young Jane and Michael Banks. Ad- venture abounds as she whisks them away to meet dancing chimney sweeps, shopkeepers and colorful characters. It features eye-pop- ping sets and costumes, dance numbers and songs such as the Academy Award-winning “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Feed the Birds,” “Step in Time” and “Super- califragilisticexpialidocious.” Come discover with Mary a world where “Anything Can Hap- pen.” 276-628-3991, www.bartertheatre.com • CLOSING AUG. 9: “The Understudy” is at Barter Stage II, Abingdon, Va. Enter Roxanne, the charming, lovesick stage manager who has a prior romantic history with Harry. Will Roxanne be able to negotiate the collision of her personal and professional life? Will Harry and Jake be able to find common ground before it’s too late? Contains strong language. 276-628-3991, www. bartertheatre.com • AUG. 12-16: “Spit Like a Big Girl” is in The Tent on Barter Square, Abingdon, Va. Inspired by the discovery of her father’s journals after his death, Clarinda Ross takes us on a humorous and poignant journey as she leaves her somewhat sheltered Southern home to venture out into the big world. 276- 628-3991, www.bartertheatre.com • OPENS AUG. 12: “The Blind Man’s Tale” is at Barter Theatre, Abingdon, Va. The story of The Blind Man’s Tale is in the Book of John chapter 9. Jesus is walking past the Temple in Jerusalem and he sees a blind man sitting there begging... just as he had been sitting there every single day of his life. Jesus bends over, whispers in this beggar’s ear... and rubs some mud on his eyes. Thus begins the story of a man who was given a whole new life by the Rabbi from Nazareth. The play features Gary Richardson’s storytelling, Christian music and a few surprises for audiences familiar with Gary’s work. 276-628-3991, www.bartertheatre. com • AUG. 14-29: Johnson City Community Theatre presents “Farce of Nature.” Directed by Joe Smith, the non- stop hilarity of this Southern-fried farce highlights one day in the life of the Wilburn Abbey Hunt, Esco Jouléy, Sarah Laughland and Annie Simpson star in “The Marvelous Wonderettes” at Barter Stage II, Abingdon, Va.
