Tonight’s Purpose• The purpose of

this meeting tonight is to inform you about what to expect as a parent of a student in 4th grade this year.

General InformationPlease call the office and/or e-mail me with any

changes in transportation. You may also write a note, but children often forget and leave things in backpacks even when I remind them so an email or call ensures I will get the message.

Keep a box of envelopes or baggies handy—never send money to school that is not in an envelope or baggie. Also, make sure that all envelopes are labeled with what the money is for including your child’s name and my name. We also have a wonderful way to monitor &/or pay for lunch money online. https://www.mypaymentsplus.com/default.aspx

MORE General Information

Please send backpacks to school EVERYDAY. It needs to be large enough to hold the binder.

Our class is always in need of extra materials for craft projects. From time to time, I will let you know in our weekly note of any specific items needed. If you are able to contribute anything we would greatly appreciate it!

RESPONSIBILITY Responsibility is a very big part of 4th grade.

In 4th grade, it is your child’s job to be responsible for their own things. They will have to take care of their supplies, make sure work is taken home if it didn’t get finished in class, make sure it is turned in when they bring it back, make sure they are prepared for each class by having the materials needed for the day, etc. I will teach them the procedures, but it is up to them to follow them and remember what to do.

There are ways that you can help them with this.• Give them some responsibilities at home.• Let them pack and carry their own backpack to school. • Allow them to walk to class on their own.• Don’t give them excuses as to why things haven’t gotten done,

ex. Ball practice, too tired to finish homework etc.• Don’t take the blame if they forget to do something, allow

them to receive the consequence if they forgot to be responsible.

Pencil Wars• Helps us learn responsibility of keeping up with our supplies!

• 1 bag containing 8 pencils and 1 big eraser; 1 Friend of Pencils nametag

• Each Friday, the bags are checked for proper contents and remaining pencils are sharpened

• If the bag contains all 8 pencils in good shape and an eraser, the student receives a “friend of pencils” ticket good for a hole punch on their “Friend of Pencils” nametag

• If the bag contains fewer than 8 pencils or no eraser, the student receives an “Oops!” ticket, missing materials are replaced, and the student begins again for the new week

• For every 9 holes in their nametag, the student wins a prize; greater with each 9 holes

• ***parents please do not replace pencils if your childcomes home and says they are missing any. We willreplace them and the game continues. This is a responsibility lesson for your child.

Accelerated Reader• A.R. is a computer based program designed to test how well your child is

comprehending text that they are reading. Every child will be assigned a reading level based on a STAR test to ensure their success with AR.

• Each child will set their own personal goal based on their STAR score, everyone in the class will not have the same goal!

• If your child reaches their goal by the end of the 9 weeks, they will get to attend our AR party.

• We will start choosing AR books from our school library starting next week. They will be required to check out books on their level, and I ask that at least one of them be a chapter book.

• Please make sure that when your child brings home an AR book, they read it 20 minutes nightly.

• Your child will be able to take a test on any book they read as long as it is on their level.

• If they start having a hard time passing tests, they will have to start getting an AR log signed by the parent saying they have read the book at home that they want to test on.

• Their comprehension goal will be to reach 85% accuracy i.e. miss only 1 question of 5 or 2 of 10, on each test they take. We will celebrate their success with certain incentives from time to time.

• Each week your child’s AR tests will be averaged together for a reading grade. • You may sign up to be notified anytime they take a test so you can check the

progress toward their goal as well as see the scores they are getting.• There is a link on my website. The ID is RDI-and their class • number. Password is initials and their birthday mmddyy.

• In 4th-6th grade AR is a grade. Please ensure that your child is reading and testing twice a week.

Behavior Management• We will use Class Dojo www.classdojo.com as our behavior

management system this year.

• Students may earn or lose points based on behavior in all classes, lunch, recess, or specials throughout the day.

• Any negative behaviors will have natural consequences. For example, they talk to friends while they are on the carpet, they won’t sit on the carpet with their friends. If they play during work time, they may use their recess time to finish.

Ways to Stay Informed Sign up to receive Dojo notifications so you will

know how your child is doing each day. This will also allow you to check their progress toward the goal for the week.

Sign up for Remind101 notifications. This will allow us to email you reminders. It does not allow you to text us back.

Sign up to get a notification every time your child takes an AR test. This will allow you to see if they are taking the correct number of tests as well as how they are doing on the test.

Make sure I have your current email address because I send out emails weekly. This will help ensure that you get the latest info.

Ways to Help

YOU ARE YOUR CHILD’S FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT TEACHER! Research states that parents who are involved with their child’s education will have children who are better learners.

1. A good nights rest & a good breakfast helps your child learn.2. Send backpacks AND binders (signed) every day.3. Keep supplies at home for homework (crayons, scissors, glue, pencils).4. Help your child return homework on time.5. Read what is sent home.6. Talk to your child about their day. If they say “nothing” be more

specific and ask for one good thing that happened that day.7. Look for the positive, praise your child and tell them you love them

everyday.8. Join P.T.A. and return the volunteer form.9. Attend conferences.10. Help with fund-raisers.
