Additional Options Notes
Special Education Eligibility is determined by a GPA of 5.5 or higher. A high standard of written literacy is essential. Acceptance is competitive. Limited number of places available.
If you complete the Special Education pathway, you will qualify in your first and second teaching areas, but will have to check pathway information to determine if you will also qualify in any further teaching areas. NB: Students who miss out may be able to follow the Master of Special Education as an alternative postgraduate qualification route after graduation.
Honours Project Eligibility is determined by a GPA of 5.5 or higher. A high standard of written literacy is essential. Acceptance is determined by availability of adequate supervision and viability of proposed study.
Honours is designed to build a direct and prestigious pathway into doctoral research. Students graduating with Class I Honours may be competitive for postgraduate scholarships to complete their doctorate in educational research. NB: Doctoral study is HECS exempt.
Program Officers are located at each student HUB. They provide support to students around a range of administrative matters, such as credit applications, cross-institutional study, etc. You can also see your program convenor for advice on academic matters including course selection and progression. Unsure who your program convenor is? Find there contact details here: www.newcastle.edu.au/school/education/students/program-convenors.html

Graduate Certificate in Theology Completing requirements for “Studies of Religion” as outlined by the NSW Institute of Teachers and set out in the pathways above qualifies the graduate to teach the NSW Board of Studies curriculum area of the same name. It does NOT qualify the graduate to teach in Catholic, Christian Independent, or other types of religious schools. Students seeking employment in the Catholic sector should consider concurrent study in the Graduate Certificate in Theology. Upon completion of both the Graduate Certificate in Theology and your Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) / Bachelor of Arts teaching qualification, you may have a competitive edge in the non-government school market place and increased career opportunities, particularly for working in the Catholic Education system. In following this path, you will need to ensure that you are able to meet the demands of both programs. For more information do to the online Handbook entry for the program: http://www.newcastle.edu.au/program/12211.html
