Bathing a newborn

Preparing the bath

Bathing your newborn

Think safety: bathtime do's and don'ts

When bathing a newborn, startby preparing the bath area.

Collect all the bath items you

need and position them near

the bath. Have an unfolded

towel handy in preparation for

Make sure the room is at acomfortable temperature and fill

the bath with about 5 cm of warm

water. Test the water temperature

with your wrist or elbow – it

should be approximately 36° C and

should NOT feel hot on your skin.

Once the bath is ready, undress your baby. Cradling

her head and shoulders with

one hand and supporting her

body with the other, gently

lower her into the bath.

Moisten a cotton wool ball with

warm water and gently clean

your newborn’s eyelids, wiping

from inner eye to outer eye. Use

a different piece of cotton wool

for each eye.

Once or twice a week you can

wash your newborn's hair. To do

so, lay baby down in the bathand gently splash some water

onto her head. There's no need

for shampoo until she's older.

Use a soft washcloth to gently

clean your newborn’s face (1),

then the neck and body (2),leaving the genitals and bottom

till last (3).

Babies can drown in less than 5

cm of water so never leave your

newborn, or any child,

unattended in the bath. If you

have to leave the bath

area, wrap baby in a towel and

take her with you.

It’s usually not necessary to use

soap – it can make your newborn

slippery and hard to hold. However,

if you do decide to use soap,

consider an alternative such as

sorbolene lotion which won’t

irritate baby’s skin.

Make sure your newborn is

secured in a bouncer or cot

before disposing of the

bathwater.

Glossary:

Bath Items: When bathing a newborn, it helps to collect these items beforehand: the bath, a towel, a washcloth, cotton

wool, a new nappy and clean clothes.

Breastfeeding positions

Getting comfortable

Making sure that you’re comfortable and relaxed and that baby is correctly attached can help to

make breastfeeding easier and more enjoyable. Try to feed in a chair that offers good back support;

use cushions or pillows to prop up your arms; and if necessary, rest your feet on a telephone book or footstool. It’s also good to experiment with the different feeding positions, shown below, until you

find one that works for you and baby.

Breastfeeding positions

Other positions

This is the classic 'front hold'

or 'cradle position'.The 'underarm position' shown

above is also known as the 'footy

hold'. It’s possible to feed twins

together in this position (see

below).

The 'lying down' position is

particularly good for mums

who’ve had caesareans or if

your bottom is sore after the

birth.

In the first few weeks, it may be easier to feed

twins separately. However, once you’ve got thehang of it, you can try feeding them together using

the 'twin hold'.

If you feel uncomfortable or self-conscious

when breastfeeding in public, drape a lightmuslin wrap over your shoulder so it covers

your breast and baby.

Breastfeeding techniques

The basic feeding routine

Newborns need to be fed six to 12 times every 24 hours – eight feeds a day is common. Once you’ve

got the hang of it, most feeds take 20 minutes or so, however, in the early days and weeks they may

take up to an hour. The basic routine is to feed from one breast, have a break and change baby's

nappy, then offer the other breast. Don't worry if she doesn't want it – the important thing is to offer

it.

Attaching to the breast

Breaking the attachment and burping

To start the feed, hold baby so her

chest is touching your chest; hernose should be in line with your

nipple. Gently brush your nipple

from her nose to her upper lip –

this will encourage her to open her

When her mouth is wide open,

bring baby to your breast

keeping your hands across her

back and shoulders. When she

attaches, most of the areola will

be in her mouth and her chin will

When baby is not correctly attached

and just sucks the nipple, feeding ispainful, nipples can become

damaged and the breast won’t be

properly drained. If baby hasn’t

attached correctly, stop, take her off

the breast as shown below and try

again.

It’s normal to feel a 'stretching

sensation' when baby starts

sucking, but if breastfeeding hurtsit may mean that baby is not

correctly attached. So stop, remove

baby from the breast and try

Avoid pulling baby from the

breast. Instead, break her

attachment by inserting your littlefinger into the corner of her

mouth, between her gums, and

gently remove her from the breast.

Your baby may need to burp after

feeding from each breast. To do

this, sit her up or hold her to yourshoulder and gently rub or pat her

back. Not all babies burp so if you

don't hear an 'uurp!' don’t worry.

Changing a disposable nappy

Set-up and strip off

Cleanse and apply cream

Before you change a nappy, make

sure you have everything you

need within arm's reach of the

change area. This includes: a

fresh nappy, baby wipes and baby

cream.

Lie baby down on the change

table. If she grizzles, sing her a

song or give her a favourite toy to

keep her entertained.

Undress baby's bottom half and

unfasten the nappy. Use the front

of the nappy to wipe off any poo,

then fold the nappy into a tight

bundle before putting it in a

plastic bag.

Gently cleanse baby's bottom

using baby wipes. Make sure

you get into the crevices but

avoid separating a baby girl's

labia to 'clean inside'. Likewise,

a boy's foreskin should never be

pushed back.

To wipe the back of baby's

bottom, hold her by the legs with

your fingers between her ankles

and gently lift so her bottom

comes slightly off the change

table. Wiping girls front to back

will help avoid vaginal infections.

Apply a dollop of baby cream

to prevent against nappy rash.

Open a clean nappy, making sure

the fastening tabs are towards the

top. Lift baby up by the ankles and

slip the nappy beneath her bottom.

Fold the front flap up, tuck itfirmly around baby's waist and

secure each tab.

Once you've dressed baby, secure

her in a bouncer or cot and

dispose of the nappy. Wash your

hands before touching baby's

hands or face.

Remember: never leave a baby

unattended on a change table.

They can squirm or roll off in

seconds. If you have to take your

eyes off baby, keep your hands

on.

Be prepared for emergencies by

familiarising yourself with first aid

procedures and keeping a list of emergency numbers in your mobile

or by the phone.

If a baby is unconscious, check her

mouth for any items blocking her

airway. This could include hertongue, food, vomit or blood. If

present, use your little finger to

clear the blockage from her mouth.

Check for breathing. Listen for the

sound of the breath, look for

movements of the chest or feel forthe breath on your cheek.

If baby is breathing, place her in

the recovery position (shown above),

phone 000 and check her regularly

for continued signs of life until the

ambulance arrives.

If baby is NOT breathing, tilt her head

back very slightly, lift her chin to bring

the tongue away from the back of the

throat, opening her airway. Take a

breath and seal her mouth and nose

with your mouth. Blow gently and

steadily for about one second. Watch

for the rise and fall of the chest; take

another breath and repeat the sequence.

If there are no signs of life after two

breaths, make sure someone has

phoned 000 and commence chest

compressions.

Position two fingers in the centre of

baby’s chest and give 30

compressions at a rate of

approximately 100 per minute.

Each compression should depress the

chest by about one third.

After 30 compressions, take a

breath, seal your mouth over baby’s

mouth and nose and give two steady

breaths. Look for the rise and fall of

the chest.

Continue giving 30 compressions followed

by two breaths until medical help arrives.

If signs of life return, put baby in the

recovery position (shown in 3a), however,

continue to monitor breathing and be prepared to recommence CPR at any time.
