Healthy Northland (S.H.I.P.)
Goal: Facilitate a Breastfeeding Team that includes Hospital, Clinics, Public Health, and other community resources to implement a breastfeeding action plan

• 10 Steps Education-meetings and Summits• Built relationships within the Community• Gaining more perspectives with public health• Several PHNs from different counties and Indian Services
have attended staff meetings to provide education on their services
• Initiated an electronic public health referral for all patients• Focus on Prenatal Education• Review how to establish more breastfeeding support after
discharge
Expanding Prenatal Clinic Education
Ob/Gyn & Family Practice Clinics Baby Friendly Education Provided to all Clinics
– Worked together to eliminate influence of formula companies in the clinic setting
– Worked to formulate a Breastfeeding Education Policy consistent for all St. Luke’s clinics providing antepartum care
– Developed a curriculum so all topics designated by Baby Friendly, USA are covered during antepartum care
– MN Breastfeeding Coalition handouts are being used in all St. Luke’s Clinics
– More Breastfeeding Support available in the clinics. 3 OB NPs completed CLE certification this year. SLH Peds has a MD that is a CLC, and another that is IBCLC certified.
Clinic Support After Discharge
Infants being discharged from the St. Luke’s Birthing Center already have their follow-up appointments scheduled before discharge now
Mom/Baby dyads that need Lactation Support at any postpartum or infant visit are referred to Aftercare, usually the same day, for additional help and support
Baby Friendly Work Group meets every 3 months includes Family Practice, Ob/Gyn, Pediatrics and several other departments to ensure that the 10 steps are being implemented system-wide.
St. Luke’s Breastfeeding Support Group
Who, how, when, where?– Will happen before already scheduled monthly Breastfeeding
Education classes when there is already a Lactation Nurse available
– Room being used for Breastfeeding Ed is big enough for a support group session
– Start with a monthly support group session to see what the need is
– Re-evaluate for any changes needed
