WELCOME

Congratulations on joining the BA (Hons) Film Production course at Arts University Bournemouth. You have an exciting time ahead of you! You will find all the information in this pack that will allow you to prepare.

You have been accepted on to our highly competitive four-year study option. This means you have shown huge potential but will benefit from the extra skills, experience and knowledge, both practical and theoretical, that is offered by our Extended Level 4 programme.

Please visit our website for further details: aub.ac.uk/courses/ba/ba-film-production/extended-fouryear-study-option/

While practical filmmaking forms an extensive part of our course - and you will be making films within weeks of your arrival - the role of preproduction is also central to filmmaking and our successful students are those that recognise the importance of research. We encourage you to get into the habit of writing about and analysing historical and contemporary cinema and – most importantly – watching as many films as you can.

The film staff and students look forward to seeing you in September.

If for any reason you are delayed on your way to AUB on your first day, please make your way to Main Reception, located on the ground floor of South House. If you are unable to attend Induction Week please contact Admissions ([email protected]) where the team will advise you.

You must arrive and check in on Monday 17 September. Your first few days at the University will include enrolment and induction events to introduce you to the facilities and services you will be using as a student, as well as the activities and resources on your course. You will receive copies of important documents, including your course handbook and the Undergraduate Course Framework and HE Regulations. Many courses will also hold the first classes of the term.

At your IT Induction you will be granted login and internet rights, therefore granting you access to MyAUB, where you will have access to your AUB email and other facilities. Once you have access to MyAUB you will be able to view your timetable, which will appear in your electronic calendar. You will not be able to view your timetable until you’ve had your IT Induction and have enrolled.

You will be required to be on campus every day of Induction Week. Below you will find the centrally arranged activities (locations in brackets) which have been scheduled for you. As well as these activities there will be course specific activities and we will confirm these in a personalised Induction Week timetable which will be emailed to you in September prior

to your arrival, so please look out for it. It is likely we will also confirm further additional activities when we meet you in Induction Week, so it’s very important you’re on campus all week so you do not miss anything.

PREPARING FOR YOUR COURSE

Computer EquipmentPlease note that a computer of your own is NOT a course requirement. However, if you are purchasing any computer equipment for your course, remember that many computer retailers offer student discounts, so if you are considering buying a computer you may wish to wait until you have enrolled on your course. You may also wish to discuss appropriate hardware and software specifications with the course team before purchasing. AUB has a range of Mac and PCs available for students to use.

Recommended HardwareMany students prefer the convenience of working on their own computer and if you are considering purchasing one, the following specification is recommended: you will find a laptop is preferable to a desktop. Mostly Macs are used by students; this also reflects the creative industries.

Recommended SoftwareThe course utilises Pro Tools, which is Mac based, and Avid Editing Suite, which is PC based.

Software Provided by AUBOnce you enrol on the course you will be able to download Microsoft Office 365 to your personal computer, so don’t pay extra when buying a computer to purchase MS Office. You get it free as an AUB student! You will also have 1TB of cloud storage, which we recommend you use to back-up all work. AUB also provides access to Autodesk software. Before purchasing additional software we advise you check with the course team, and remember many retailers offer student discount.

WHAT TO BRING ON THE FIRST DAY

Notepad, pens/pencil and a smile
