New Year’s Eve (PG-13) How can a movie with the greatest cast in the history of cinema bomb so badly? Garry Marshall has assembled an all-star cast to romp through Katherine Fugate’s sometimes funny but often mean-spirited script consisting of a dozen vignettes, all occurring on (duh) New Year’s Eve. Halle Berry, DeNiro, Jon Bon Jovi, Jessica Biel, Sarah Jessica Parker are among those who go down with the script.
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol * (PG-13) We know, we know, it’s hard to fathom that Tom Cruise can be such an effective macho guy. In this episode his character, Ethan Hunt, goes undercover after the IMF is shut down. His mission: clear the good name of the agency. Guess what? It rocks, a mesmerizing action ride so intense that it ranks among
the year’s best. Don’t miss it.
NEW ON DVD Cowboys &
Aliens When a s t ranger (Danie l Craig) appears in New Mexico circa 1875 the iron-fisted boss man of the territory (Harrison Ford) doesn’t much cotton to him. But when strange things start a–comin’ the locals decide the new guy ain’t half bad. Good thing, too, pardner, ‘cause there be aliens in them-thar hills. That’s right, folks – the kind from outer space. Jon Favreau (Iron Man) gets the unenviable task of directing a heavy-handed script. Olivia Wilde is the requisite eye-candy. It didn’t play well in theaters but give it a try at home.
NOW PLAyINGTinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy *
(R) The remake of John Le Carre’s spy novel – the author co-wrote the script – is a wonderfully directed thriller during which the audience unravels the clues. Set at the height of the Cold War, Britain’s secret intelligence unit has apparently been compromised by a double-agent. A disgraced former spy, played by Gary Oldman, is hired to find the mole. Tom Hardy, Colin Firth and John Hurt co-star. Oldman will surely get Oscar support for his remarkable performance, and the film, a legitimate cliffhanger, may earn a nomination as well.
A Christmas Memory will screen at Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport on Sunday.

by Asher Lee
Many scholars credit Nostradamus, a scholar and a healer, with predicting numerous events in world history, from the Great Fire of London, to the rise and fall of Napoleon and Adolf Hitler. Pretty heady stuff for a dude who died in 1566! Others, though, say his writings were deliberately vague and open to many interpretations.
Born and raised in France, he studied writing and medicine, but found his niche as a legitimate seer, writing annual prophecies that totaled 6338. It was a later book, entitled Les Prophesies that has been poured over ever since.
Though respected and wealthy, Nostradamus at times worried he might be arrested as a heretic, so it is said he couched many of his predictions in obscure references so they wouldn’t be readily decipherable.
His best known “prophecy”, allegedly concerning the collapse of the Twin Towers, was circulated all over the world via the Internet. Ironically, it was a hoax.
He saved his most accurate prediction for his last: On the evening of July 1, 1566, he said to his secretary, “You will not find me alive at sunrise.” The next morning he was reportedly found dead, lying on the floor next to his bed.
ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Romance and good feelings are the order of the day. Spend time enjoying where you are in your life. Everything around you is a reflection of how far you’ve come. Spend some time in gratitude and trust where you are being led.
TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) This week is a chance to face yourself - your needs, your feelings and break free from the old patterns and move toward deep emotional fulfillment. You will have to claim your needs and feelings in order to make sure you take a stand for what you really want. Check in with your feelings and then start talking.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Change is indeed in the air. The full force of these changes is still a couple of weeks off, yet you should be seeing and feeling it coming. It is true - change is happening. It’s all good
- all designed for expansion. You don’t have to force things - they will unfold organically and you don’t want to force anything prematurely.
CANCER (June 22 - July 23) There is a kind of mist descending on things and they become foggy and unclear. Fears may be coming out of the corners of your mind for you to deal with. Don’t buy into the fear. Remember all that you have come through and trust yourself to rise to any occasion. Do your best to tell the fear voices to shut up and look only to your past to be reminded of why you can trust yourself.
LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Not a good time to burn the candle at both ends and if this advice comes too late then it will be time to take a break for yourself and fill yourself back up. You do need to learn how to sayNO and mean it. You don’t help anyone if you burn
yourself out - think about giving quality not quantity.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Avoid negativity at all costs. You’re more sensitive right now and may tend to look at the worst possible perspective of things. Keep your head in a good place - as good as you can. Things aren’t as bleak as they may seem and change is coming.
LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Find ways to be a bit kinder to yourself in your own mind. Beating yourself up won’t help anything; it will only serve to keep you locked into a negative spin on things. Stay positive - especially when you are analyzing yourself. Cut yourself some slack.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Great time to spend some time with those you love. Take some time to enjoy yourself. Take baby steps toward learning how to receive. Allow others to give to you. There is a great deal of vulnerability in asking for help - yet you need to figure out how to do just that.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Time to do some talking. Adjustments to previous plans will probably have to be made, yet you do need to keep talking to make sure all your ideas are heard before
plans are finalized. Speak up.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) This week take some time for yourself so that you can remember who you are. It is not your job to control and manipulate external things. It is your job to know that you have the power in you to handle whatever is going on. Do what you can do without manipulation or forcing things.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Feelings must lead. I know feelings aren’t the most comfortable things for you to be involved with, yet your feelings need to be held in higher regard right now. You’re trying to tell yourself something. Pay attention.
PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) It’s okay to indulge yourself a bit. Take the time and do something kind for yourself. You may want to go on a mini shopping spree or buy yourself something you really need but haven’t wanted to splurge on. Don’t go crazy - yet you could treat yourself to something. It’s good to be you so enjoy yourself.
NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday.

ingredients (serves 4)
4 potatoes (peeled)1 c milk
4 chicken breasts4 chicken thighs
2 10 oz bags of spinach6 oz white cheddar1 onion (sliced thin)
1 egg yolk1/4 c flour2 tbs butter
1/3 c olive oilsalt and pepper to taste
Pan Seared Chicken With Cheddar Creamed Spinach And Potato Cake
methodBegin by sautéing the sliced
onions on medium heat in 2 tbs of olive oil. Then add the milk and cook on medium heat for 15 minutes. While this is happening take the peeled potatoes and grate them into a mixing bowl using a box grater. Squeeze the shaved potato to remove all the excess water.
When the water has been pressed out of the potatoes add the egg yolk, a light dusting of flour, and some salt and pepper. Mix together and then form four cakes. Now begin to heat
a large sauté pan for the chicken. Salt and pepper the flesh side of the bird. When your pan is nice and hot, place the chicken skin side down in the pan and place in a 400 degree oven to cook for 25 minutes.
In a small sauté pan heat 2 tbs of olive oil and 1 tbs of butter and cook the potato cakes for 5 minutes on each side. Once finished, put them in the oven with the chicken until it is done.
Now in a large sauté pan start
cooking the spinach. While the spinach is cooking add 1 tsp of butter, the remaining flour, and the cheddar cheese. Whisk this mixture periodically while it cooks on medium heat for another 5 minutes. The spinach should begin to cook down. Once it has, and there is little liquid left in the spinach pan, you can add the cheese sauce. Remove the chicken and potato cakes from the oven. Plate and enjoy.
