EDUCATION- A TOOL TO AWAKEN INDIA

“Where the mind is without fear, and the heart is held high,

Where the world is not broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls,

Where the words come out from the depths of truth,

Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;

Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead

habits,

Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever widening thought and action -

Into that heaven of freedom,

My father, let my country awake.”

Awakened India, beautiful India, this is the vision for India, Rabindranath Tagore had for his

native land. The depiction seems so pleasant to be like. This is something we know that is

good for us, something which should be the scenario. And we also know that it can be

achieved through EDUCATION.

It does not matter to whom imparted, how imparted, where imparted, when imparted.

What matters is that education must be imparted to all. It is every person’s need, which is

even quoted as every person’s right under Article 21a of our Indian Constitution. When this

is what we know, why should we care for the backlogs and hurdles? Where is the focus, the

motivation to turn out to be best in the world with the tool of education?

In the present day conditions when there is fear wherever we are, whatever we do, a

student has the confidence to express every thought present in the mind freely. When you

are free from fear, nothing can stop you to venture a new idea, interrogate, create and

innovate. And education is something which will get you this confidence. Education nurtures

the soul of the student. The purpose of education is never just employment it is more for

personal fulfilment and self-improvement. A person who is educated inculcates a sense of

self-esteem leading to satisfaction.

When looking at what education could be, we need to look beyond seeing education as a

tool to train the mind for preparation of a job. Education teaches how to use our mind, how

to respond peacefully, how to find and follow our passion. This just not comes from the

bookish knowledge but from the overall environment of the institution. The education

system can encourage students to think for them, question, debate, and form their own

opinions and that will help them all to liberate, empower and socially reform to be good

citizens.

The knowledge any student gains from subject or activity in education plays a crucial role in

bridging the divide between people. It leads to better communication, touching our

emotional and imaginative core, leading us to a better perspective for the welfare of

Page 4: B N Satnalika Foundation October 2013 Newsletter

humanity. It could be a key tool for promoting a more just and

equitable society as it is education where an equal opportunity can

be given to all from diverse backgrounds to learn well. This stands

in sharp contrast to the hierarchy of the caste system, which stunts

India’s growth even today.

Of course we cannot expect everything to transform right away, or

even in a few years’ time; this process of transformation of civil

society, will take at least a generation to occur but that will be

possible at a faster pace with the help of education.

B N Satnalika Foundation reaches to underprivileged children so to ensure they get access

to proper elementary education.

EDUCATION―A Need of the moment

Humans are animals. And here we aren’t just talking about them being a social animal. The word

social is losing its identity day by day with news of incidents and crimes happening in and around the

world. And pardon me if I’m wrong but yes, they are turning to mere animals and this is because

they are carrying this instinct to do anything which they feel like doing without having control over

their senses to judge what is good and what is bad.

Today, in India, the most frequently heard term is “Gang rape”. It is the need of the moment to stop

them, as we all carry our instincts. So ignoring the lawmen, the system, the Government, could

education possibly have saved Nirbhaya? In both the Delhi and Mumbai gang rape cases, an

educated young woman was assaulted by a group of uneducated men. That is something which

when strikes the mind of a thinker gives rise to an apparent argument on “why education is raped”.

If those men were educated and if some wise man would have taught them real ethics and virtues,

the crime could be stalled.

We don’t say that certain books on Moral Science, Value Education or any other similar subject can

change the whole world by the teachings in it. But the fact can never be denied that education leads

to the overall development of the students leading them to be wise enough to know the difference

between being an animal and being a social animal. The environment at an educational institution

itself is sufficient enough to make anyone understand things, learn the moral values applicable in life

and act properly.

They say that even educated people commit crimes. But this argument is not strong enough to deny

the need of education. Exceptions are everywhere, but it’s our duty that we give importance to

education. If we go through the data of the crimes, we will find that somewhere or the other place,

being uneducated was a common thing with the criminals.

Education has been a part of humanity since Mahabharata, even from times before that. Had

Krishna not been teaching Arjuna, the scenario would have been completely different. And mind

you, education doesn’t contain solving a quadratic equation but it gives us the ethics and sensibility

to lead the world or at least our self. It promotes a variety of positive sides of people which they may

not know.

As Krishna says- “Even a very small amount of this dharma saves one from great danger, for there is

no loss in such an endeavour, and it knows no diminution.” If we too make education and knowledge

our Dharma, we will never lose anything but will just gain by saving ourselves from any danger. And

this time the danger is on the humanity, so we need to focus on our Dharma to our level best.

Super Receptionist: Powering Goodness of Heart (Knowlarity’s Practice)

Ever thought about giving to charity?, sending crayons and school supplies to

underprivileged? or how about sharing food? or old clothes during winters? Have you ever

thought about giving your commercial software for social use?. Increasingly we are seeing a

wave of some amazing entrepreneurs making news about awesome initiatives that try to

bring social awakening, maybe it’s the dabba movement or a slum hygiene reward

programme. These tech entrepreneurs are tackling such problems and challenges head on.

However, very few startups follow the path of CSR, sometime slimming revenue or sharp

budget cuts get in way of doing good for world. However, what happens when you know

you got a product that can be used for good. Well naturally, you use it to benefit society at

large.

We follow the culture of “Give it Forward” at Knowlarity, basically everything we do has to

be good, If we are building a feature, it has to be good for customer, if we launch new

pricing, it has to be good for SMEs. You got the point. We also take this one step forward

and also give away usage of our commercial product free for some social organisations

working for underprivileged upliftment. These registered NGOs get a SuperReceptionist

number (Mobile, Landline or Toll Free) that they can distribute, enabling them to gather,

support, donations, information and even receive voicemails. Optimised usage results in

adding volunteers’ numbers so if call flow is more during a donation drive the calls can be

distributed. Each and every call log is maintained and conversations are recorded and

archived so nothing is missed out. Monitoring becomes very easy when there is a huge

surge in call flow. Currently we support more than 20+ such organisations driving roughly

10,000+ calls weekly.

Our focus and dedication to provide most efficient Cloud Telephony solution in the world

has led us to believe that everyone is capable of doing good and when these organisations

reached out to us, we just couldn't say no. We hope that more startup organisations will

start following the lead and do their bit for underprivileged.

Is Government School a Place for ADDA only?

Sight of some faded and worn out uniforms without any trace of uniformity, pathetic

screams and noises at playground, silent walls of rooms build up in supposition of building

up of a great future and the unpleasant MIDDAY MEAL. tWell if nothing else could attract

your senses to find what it is all about, at least the last word is sufficient to say it all. This is

what a Government school in India is like. Better we should say a mere ADDA because there

is nothing as such which could prove even a gist of its actual identity.

The statistics speak of increase in number of Government schools in India; increase in

number of students at all those establishments and all other data. But how much

importance it has if we also know that the population of our country is growing at an even

faster pace? And when we come across the findings that there is basically a huge difference

between the number of children registered as a student at these schools and those of who

actually attend and finally those who gain from these so called temples of education?

Anyone who reaches a Government school to see the situation may understand it all very

easily, what this whole piece of writing wishes to convey. The description up there will

certainly turn into a reality. Hardly 50% of the students in the books of these ADDAS reach

there and who really do, even they don’t make any sense doing so. Students come in the

greed or we can say in the need of the midday meals and there too they gain nothing when

served the unhygienic, barely nutritious and a simply edible diet.

Classes turn into something which seems as if someone has just built up storerooms in a

row. In the digitally equipped era where education has reached standards touching the

zenith, still there are kids roaming in the corridors with slate and chalk. The uniforms lose

their identity with the passage of time and a time arrives when the clothes are same but

they don’t seem to be so because of imprints of everyone’s own fashion senses and needed

alterations.

But what is the worst part? It is the lack of proper faculty. We can’t make all the teachers

there stand together and then accuse them all. But for sure, it is all quite because of their

ignorance. It is sad when you find that teachers in Government school usually don’t go there

and even if they do, they don’t teach. Students have been found at times doing chores for

their teachers for marks. The level of teaching is nothing in comparison to the private

institutes.

After all this, why shouldn’t one just call it an ADDA? Maybe as it is not a solution. And just

talking about such problems and giving such tags won’t do a lot to the society. The

situations need to change, initiatives are needed to be taken, and motivation for education

has to be given. But then we feel that what can we do in this matter or why should I do

Page 8: B N Satnalika Foundation October 2013 Newsletter

©B N Satnalika Foundation | [email protected] | www.bnsatnalikafoundation.org

anything if others don’t. Why don’t we get it that initiatives are by individuals? Someone

has to step down and make a move. What that move should be like that depends upon the

individual. But as Nelson Mandela once said-

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Then why shouldn’t we get a child equipped with it.

Diversity push: More women sign up for CAT

A sustained effort by the Indian Institutes of Management to increase campus diversity is

paying off.

115 more IIM seats, but CAT takers down

Even as the Indian Institutes of Management have added 115 more seats this year, the

overall registration for the Common Admission Test (CAT) has declined.

Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission to install cellphones jammers to prevent

mischief at exam centres

Close on the heels of mass copying detected during Staff Selection Commission (SSC) written

examination, Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission has decided to install cellphone

jammers in the examination centres to make foolproof arrangements to prevent mass

copying.

Civil services aspirants want English dropped from exam

Around 300 students and teachers of Jawaharlal Nehru University staged a protest outside

the Union Public Service Commission office, demanding exclusion of the English language

from the civil service examination syllabus.

Delhi government seeks to reserve 12,000 Delhi University seats for locals

Sheila Dikshit govt sought to give Delhiites a major gift by reserving for them approximately

68% of undergraduate seats across 28 Delhi University colleges which receive city

government grants. The move, however, is unlikely to be cleared by the Centre.

Pallam Raju: India aiming to achieve 25% skilled workforce through vocational education

by 2017

In order to achieve this target, Raju said: "Public-Private Partnership in financing, service

delivery and provision of workspaces and training of trainers must be promoted to meet the

demand and supply gap in the field of skill development." There is a need to establish an

institutional mechanism for providing access to information on skill inventory and skill

management and development.

Economic divide widens in IITs, two distinct groups emerge

This year, one out of every five students (over 20%) who qualified disclosed that the annual

family income is over Rs 8 lakh. Two years ago about 9.3% of the qualified candidates had an

annual family income of over Rs 10 lakh. Equally stunning is the jump of students with family

income of less than Rs 1 lakh: from just 1.5% two years ago to 11.6%. Another 12.7% IITians

this year is from the Rs 1-2 lakh per year family income bracket."There is a big economic

divide on campus that you can see as an insider," said Gautam Barua, former IIT-Guwahati

director. A key factor in the steep rise of students from economically weaker sections is the

bigger and better coaching support that they are getting. The first that comes to mind is

Patna's Super-30 that for some years now has been picking poor meritorious students and

successfully coaching them for the IIT entrance exam.
