Dear Sir,

I‘m sick of seeing so much rubbish on the roadside. Last week, I drove from Woy Woy to Gosford and saw over

200 soft drink cans and 80 bottles on the roadside. The recycling and ‗Do the Right Thing‘ campaigns obviously have

not worked. Maybe the police should set up ‗litter‘ cameras as well as speed cameras to catch motorists who pollute

our roads. In South Australia, you pay a deposit of five cents on cans and bottle and this encourages people to return

them rather than dump them. New South Wales shoul introduce this idea immediately.

HOW TO PLANT A TREE

1) Dig a hole as deep as the rootball and twice as wide.

2) Check to see if the soil around the hole is too hard – if it is, loosen it up a bit with a shovel.

3) Remove the container from the rootall. (The roots are like the tree‘s blood vessels and they work best if they are

not all twisted and knotted up, so you might need to straighten them out if they are circling around after having

grown in the container.)

4) Place the tree in the hole. Make sure the soil is at the same level on the tree as the tree grew in the garden center.

5) Fill in the hole around the root-ball with soil and pack the soil with your hands and feet to make sure that there are

no air pockets.

4 – REPORT (1)

SUMMARY

I. Report

1. A report gives information by stating facts.

2. A report usually consists of two main parts:

General Classification

This part gives brief information about the focus of the report. It may give a definition of the subject.

Description

This part gives fact about the focus of the report. It may describe the features of the subject (e.g.: what it

looks like, where it lives, how it breeds).

3. An example of a report

MARSUPIALS

General Classification – gives definition of the subject (the focus og the report)

‗Marsupium‘ means ‗pouch‘, and a marsupial is an animal whose babier complete their development in a

pouch on its mother‘s body. Kangarous, koala bears and wallabies are the mos common marsupials, though

marsupial bats and moles also exist.

Description – gives fact about the subject

When the baby marsupials is born. It is small and helpless. It finds its way by instinct to its mother‘s

pouch. There is gets milk from its mother and grows steadly until it is large enough to leave the pouch and fend

for it self.

Marsupials developed before placental animals, which complete all their development inside the mother‘s

womb. Placental animals were better able to compete for food than marsupials. Marsupials died out in most parts

of the world. Once Australia had become separated from the other continents. Placental animals cloud not easilu

prey on marsupials any more. This is why marsupials have flourished in Australia. Nevertheless, some are also

found in America.

4. Present tense is mostly used in reports. However, reports may also use past tense to state past fact.

5. A report uses general terms. For example, use ‗fish‘ rather than ‗my fish‘.

6. Sometimes, passive is used in a report text.

Fish

Fish come in an amazing variety of shapes and colours, but they all have three things in common. All fish live in water,

have fins and use gills to get oxygen from the water.

A femalae fish releases eggs in water. This process is called spawning. However, there are also

some fishes, like shark and dolphin, which give birth to live young.

Fish eggs range in size from a barely visible dot to the size of pea. Fish eggs may hatch within

several days of spawning or some weeks later, depending on the species and the water temperature.

Fish have the same five sense as humans have; sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. They use

their senses to look for food, avoid predators, find a partner to spawn with and find their way around

their habitat. Fish can also differentiate colour, just as people do.

1. What are the main characteristics of a fish?

A. Live in water, have fingers and need air.

B. Live in water, have fins and gills.

C. Live in water, have eggs and lungs.

D. Live in water, have fins and give birth.

2. What s the smallest size of a fish egg?

A. A tennis ball.

B. A marble.

C. A pea

D. A dot.

3. How long do fish eggs take to hatch?

A. About two weeks.

B. For months.

C. Less than three months.

D. It depends on the species and water temperature.

4. ― . . . find a partner to spawn with . . . .‖

do this because its body has many narrow rings joined together by a softer material that enables it to change shape.

Whenever the soil is too hard to be pushed aside, the earthworm eats its way through.

By burrowing into the soil, the eaarthworm creates channels and pockets into which air can enter. This allows

the soil to become oxygenated so that plant roots can breathe. In this way, earthworms act as gardeners and

cultivators of the soil.

5. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?

A. Mearthworms are slippery

B. Earthworms can change shape

C. Earthworms are good for the soil

D. Earthworms are also called gardeners.

6. Why is it said that earthworms act as gardeners?

A. They plant many trees.

B. They make the soil good for plants.

C. They have many plants near their burrows.

SHARKS

Sharks are a type of fish that live in the sea. Sharks have lived on Earth for almost 400 million years. Today there

are about 375 species (kind) of sharks. The smallest is the dwarf dogfish which is less than 8 inches (20 centimeters)

log. The huge whale shark can be more than 50 feet (15 meters) long.

Sharks, like all fish, are vertebrates (i.e. animals with a backbone). A sharks‘s skeleton, however, is not made of

bone. It is made of flexible material called cartilage. Sharks, like other fish, are cold-blooded. They do not make their

own body heat.

Sharks live in seas all over the world. Most sharks live in warm waters. However sharks have been spotted near

the North and South Pole. Sharks live in salt water, but some can live for a while in fresh water. Bull sharks, for

example, cann swim up the Mississippi River. Some kinds of sharks live in shallow water along coatlines. Other sharks

live far out in the open ocean. A few species live deep down in the sea.

Most sharks have powerful jaws and rows of sharp, triangular teeth. They

use their teeth and jaws to crush their prey or tear out pieces of flesh. Your

teeth are anchored in your jaw. A shark‘s teeth are set into its gums. Shark‘s

often lose teeth while eating. However, there are always rows of new teeth

growing behind the first set. As a shark loses teeth, new ones move forward to

replace them.

Fish, along with shellfish, is the favourite food of most meat-eating

sharks. Great white sharks will sometimes eat larger sea creatures such as

seals, dolphins, whales and other marine mammals.

Sharks play an important role in keeping ecosystems in balance. Sharks often eat weak or diseased animals.

Biologists fear that without sharks, the number of other animals in the sea would quickly grow out of control and eat

all the food. It might take many years to restore the delicate balance that sharks help maintain.

RAIN FORESTS

A rain forest is a tropical forest with tall trees that are very close together, growing I an area where it rains a lot. One

kind of rain forest is called a temperate rain forest.

A temperate rain forest grows near the Northwest coast of the United States. Just a few kinds of evergreen trees grow

there. Another kind of rain forest is a tropical rain forest. In fact, most of the world‘s rain forests are tropical rain forests.

Tropical rain forests grow in war, places near Earth‘s equator. The equator is an imaginary line that goes arround the

midde of the planet. There are tropical rain forests in Central and South America, Africa and Asia. The world‘s largest rain

forest is the Amazon rain forest in South America. It is always hot and wet in a tropical rain forest.

Rain forests are divided into different layers. The ground in a rain forest is called the foresr floor. Some plants living

there get their food from dead plants. Other plants on the ground eat insects.

The plant layer just above the forest floor is called the understorey. Not much sunlight gets

down to this layer. Young trees and plants that like low levels of light grow in the shady

understorey.

The next layer is the canopy. Medium-size trees grow in the canopy. Most of the rain forest

animals live in the canopy. Monkeys swing from branch to branch in the rain forests of Central and

South America.

The top layer of the rain forest is called the emergent layer. The tops of tall trees make up the

emergent layer. They capture most of the sun and rainwater falling on the forest. The emergent

layer is thick and green.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) is a tall, evergreen tree, native to Australia and

Tasmania. Today, most commercial herbal preparations originate in the Mediterranean and

subtropical regions, including Spain and Morocco. The leaves and oil of the eucalyptus

plant are used for medicinal purpose. Eucalyptus leaves contain tannins (which are believed

to help reduce inflammation), flavonoids and volatile oils. Eucalyptus oil consists of the

volatile oil distilled from the fresh leaves and branch tops of the eucalyptus tree.

There are many species of eucalyptus. Some are the size of an ornamental shrub

and some grow to be giant trees. The type of eucalyptus that is most often used medicinally

is called blue gum or Australian fever tree. It can grow as high as 230 feet. Its 4-12 inch

leaves are dark green and shiny.

Topical ointments containing eucalyptus oil have been used in traditional

LEECHES

Leeches are slimy worms with two suckers, a big one at the rear end and a smaller one at the mouth. They also

have powerful muscles which enable them to expand and contract their bodies.

Most leeches live off the blood of other creatures. A leech attaches itself to its victim by piercing its skin and

secretes a substances which prevents the blood from clotting. Then it sucks up the blood. As it sucks, it expands to

many times its normal size. Once a leech attaches it self to its victim, it is very difficult to remove. However, it soon

falls off and dies if you put salt on it.

Many years ago, people believed that some diseases were caused because a patient had too much blood in his/her

SAVE THE NORTH SEA

THE NORTH SEA – AN ENVIRONMENT

UNDER THREAT

For centuries, countries bordering the North Sea have

used the North Sea as their dustbin into which they have

tipped chemical waste and sewage. They also exploit its

resources through overfishing and oil and mineral

extraction.

We are now beginning to see the effects of this abuse:

A viral epidemic (epidemic caused by a virus) killed

more than 17,000 seals in the North Sea in 1988.

Bathing in the sea off Britain‘s beaches can cause

upset stomachs and skin rashes. These problems are

caused by bacteria found in sawage.

Major seabird colonies are failing to breed. This

breeding failure could be due to diminishing fish

populations as we continue to take an unsustainable

portion of those fish still living in the North Sea.

4. An example of a narrative

Orrientation – tells about the stting of the story (the time/place of the story) and the main characters in the story

On day, an honest mouse made friend with a cat. They lived in the same house. Since winter would come

soon, the mouse suggested that they should store some food.

―In this way, we will not get hungry in the winter,‖ the mouse said.

―That is a good idea,‖ the cat said.

Complication – includes situations, activities or events that lead to problem(s)/complication(s) before the climax

One night, the mouse and the cat found a big pot of cheese. They were so happy about it. They carefully

kept the pot in the attic of the house next door.

The cat, however, was not a good friend. He wanted to have all the cheese for himself, so he tried to find

a way to secretly eat the cheese.

So he spoke to the kind-hearted mouse, ―My friend, my nephew is sick. I have to go and visit him,‖ he

said sadly.

‗I‘m sorry to hear that, my friend. Yes, of course. I think you should go and visit him. I hope your

nephew will get well soon,‖ the mouse said.

After that, the quickly went to the attic and greedily ate the cheese. He ate one thirf of the cheese.

Three days later, the cat said to the mouse that he would visit his sister. He said that his sister had just had

a new babby. Of course, the cat lied again because he went to eat the cheese in the attic. There was only a half of

the cheese left.

Once upon a

time ...

―I want to visit my old grandma,‖ the cat told the mouse.

―Okay. Send my best regards to her, will you?‖ reply the mouse.

Hurriedly, the cat ran to the attic. This time, the cat greedily ate up the rest of the cheese.

When the winter came, the mouse finally found out that there was no cheese left. He finally realized that

cat had lied to him all the time. The mouse was very disappointed and angry at the same time.

He carried angrily, ―You are not my best friend anymore!‖

Who Did Patrick’s Homework?

By Carol Moore

Patrick never did his homework. ―Too boring,‖ he said. He

played baseball and basketball instead. His teachers told him,

―Patrick! Do your homework or you won‘t learn a thing/‖ And

it‘s true, sometimes he did feel like a ding-a-ling. But what

could he do? He hated homework.

The one day, his cat was playing a little doll and he

grabbed it. To his surprise, it wasn‘t a doll at all, but a man of

the tiniest size. He had a little woolle shirt with old-fashioned

trousers and a high, tall hat, much like a witch‘s. he yelled,

―Save me! Don‘t give me back to that cat. I‘ll grant you a wish,

I promise you that.‖

Patrick couldn‘t believe how lucky he was! Here was the answer to all his problems. So he said. ―Only if you do all my

homework ‗till the end of the semester, that‘s 35 days. If you do a good enough job, I could even get A‘s.‖

The little man‘s face wrinkled like a dishcloth thrown in the hamper. He kicked his legs and pursed his lips, ―Oh, am I

cursed! But I‘ll do it.‖

And true to his word, that little elf began to do Patrick‘s homework. Except there was one glitch. The elf didn‘t always

know what to do and he neede help. ―Help me!! Help me!‖ he‘d say. And Patrick would have to help – in whatever way.

―I don‘t know this word,‖ the elf squeaked while reading Patrick‘s homework. ―Get me a dictionary. No, what‘s even

better. Look up the word and pronounce it, letter by letter.‖

When it came to maths, Patrick was out of luck. ―What are timetables?‖ the elf shrieked. ―Was elves never need that.

And addition and subtraction and division and fractions? Here, sit down beside me, you simply must guide me.‖

Elves knew nothing of human history, to them it‘s a mystery. So the little elf, already a shouter, just got lauder. ―Go to

the library. I need books. More and more books. And you can help me read them, too.‖

As a matter of fact, every day, in every way that little elf was a nag! Patrick was working harder than ever and it was a

drag! He was staying up nights, had never felt to weary, and was going to school with his eyes puffed and bleary.

Finally, the last day of school arrived and the elf was free to go. Since there was no more homework, he quietly and

slyly slipped out the back door.

Patrick got his A‘s and his classmates were amazed. His teachers smiled and were full of praise. And his parents? They

wondered what had happened to Patrick. He was now the model kid: cleaned his rom, did his chores, was cheerful, never

rude, as if he had developed a whole new attitude.

You see, in the end, Patrick still thought he‘d made that tiny man do all his homework. But I‘ll share a secret, just

Trains

General statement - gives definition of the subject

A train is made up of railroad cars hooked together and pulled by a locomotive.

Locomotives are sometimes called engines. All trains run on tracks. Freight trains haul goods.

Passenger trains carry people.

Description - gives important fact about the subject

What moves a train?

Locomotives oush or pull railroad cars. They have powerful motors. The motors turn

locomotive wheels that run on railroad tracks.

Some locomotives get their power from electricity. The electricity comes from wires

above the track or from a special third rail next to the track. Other locomotives get their power

from diesel fuel, which is similar to the gasoline that most cars use. The kind of locomotive

engines most used today are diesel-electrics. Engines that burn diesel fuel drive generators that

make electricity. Powerful electric motors turn the wheels of a diesel-electric locomotive.

Kind of Freight Cars

A freight train may have as many as 200 cars hooked together. There are special

railroad cars for different kinds of freight.

A boxcar has four sides, a floor and a roof. It looks like a box on wheels. Boxcar carry

freight that has to kept clean and dry such as radios, television sets, and boxes of cereal.

Refrigerator cars work like your home refrigerator. They are boxcars that are cool inside.

Refrigerator cars carry meat, fruit, frozen dinners and other food that must be kept cold.

The hopper car is open on the top. Hopper cars carry coal, sand, gravel and ore (rocks

that contain metals). Hopper cars are easy to unload because they have doors on the bottom. The

doors open ad the coal, sand or gravel pour out.

The Javelin

A javelin is a long stick with a pointed end. The aim of the javelin is to throw it for a great distance.

The javelin is a sport which has benefited from modern technology. Earlier, javelins were made of heavy wood which

made them vibrate in flight. In the 1950s, athletes began to use steel javelins. Today, most javelins are made of steel and a

lighter metal called alumunium.

Many factors affect the distance over which the athlere can throw the javelin. Among these are the speed and height at

which it leaves the hand, the angle at which it is thrown, and its flight path.

Modern javelins are ‗distance-rated‘. This means that different javelins are made to be thrown over different distance.

So you can use a javelin that is designed to travel roughy over the distance you expect to throw it.
