E.O.E.

Notes from the EditorThe church looked splendid for Harvest Festival earlier this month;decorated with flowers and light shining through the stained glasswindows. The smoke rising from the BBQ was an added bonus andwe enjoyed a very tasty lunch. Thanks to all involved. It was a quiet, still evening on Thursday and the bells did sound lovelyfor the bell ringers’ weekly practice. If you are interested in joiningthem, find contact details on page 33.This issue I have included an extract from the diary of Brian Garratt’sepic walk through France from the South coast to the beaches ofNormandy. Thanks to Marlis and family for letting us share the story.Brian was born in Badingham and worked here as a cabinet makeruntil the mid 80s. He built the house next to the village hall, whereMeg & Malcolm live, and Wayside and Ridgeway bungalows justfurther along, where his daughter Karen lives. There’s now a housein-between, where Brian’s workshop used to stand. Remember thesmell of the wood shavings? And the sawdust which Linda and I usedto make into pies (made a change to mud)! The story of Brian’sjourney across France will continue in future issues. If you have a story you think our readers would like to share, pleaseget in touch.

Best Wishes and Good Health, Tish

Their hospitalityhas been great and we have been made very welcome in theircosy conservatory. Our last Tuesday Teas at the Rectory willbe on 3rd November at 3pm to 4.30pm all welcome.

Our Tuesday Tea Team has been working on developing the whole TuesdayTeas idea into a village / community shop which would serves teas and coffeesas well as have for sale local produce and products from Badingham or relatedto Badingham. We have been offered the down stairs area of Carters Lodge inLow Road to house the shop. Dennington CEVCP SchoolRobins ClassRobins Class have spent many weeks in the Summer termlearning the skills needed to make their own airplane in designand technology. The children learned how to safely use saws, hot glue guns, measuring and assembling to make their planes.

Additionally, the children discovered the importance of needing motors, axlesand wheels on their vehicles.

In Music, the children have been captivated by Charlie Chaplin and we decidedto become sound editors and record percussion instruments and sound effectsto one of his silent movies.

Reading Cafes will resume on Thursday 8th October from 9.00 to 9.30. Parentsjoin their children for phonics games, guided and shared reading. Afterwards, there are refreshments in the library. The children have told us how much theylove having you in class, so please come along!

Wrens ClassThree of our children have spent a huge amount of time researching, designingand making the coral reef biome in our room. We finished off this topic bymaking an attractive, informative display page explaining all the facts you needto know about this exciting habitat.

The second group of children also put in lots of effort to make their biome - theSavannah. The children loved learning about all the mammals as they puttogether a beautiful information page about the African Savannah.

Wrens enjoyed a morning of learning maths skills to make chocolate muffins.

Swallows Class – Careers FairThe children in Class 3 at Charsfield and Dennington enjoyed finding out aboutthe ins and outs of various careers. We were fantastically supported by the localcommunity and had a very wide range of careers to choose from. Theseincluded a web designer, a barrister, a paramedic, a dance instructor, a treesurgeon, a chef, a gamekeeper and many more! The children asked a greatmany questions and were inspired to work hard at school to achieve their goals!

Montpellier to Hillman on Foot by Brian Garratt (1936 – 2006)

For many years I have cherished the idea of walking from the Mediterranean tothe Channel. At the age of 67 I felt it was time this dream was seriouslyaddressed. France has a large network of G. R. footpaths, part of which I haveused in the past and are absolutely superb to walk on. But I had set myself atarget of 40 days to get from the Med to Hillman on the 6th of June, whichrequired the most direct route using paths and the smallest roads possible.

Why Montpellier? - the curve of the French Mediterranean coast makes it thenearest point to the channel and having a good International airport makes foran easy start.

Why Hillman? - this was the codeword for a German fortification on the Norman-dy beaches in 1944, and was captured by the Suffolk Regiment on D-Day. Havingbeen a marksman in the Regiment in the early fifties, this seemed a good aimingpoint for the 60th anniversary.

On the 28th April 2004 at 3.00 I walked out of Montpellier airport wonderingwhat lay ahead. Having worked right up to the previous evening I had thrownmy things into the rucksack and hoped I had got it right. I had already re-searched the internet and found www.lescampingdefrance.com and given my-self a corridor of optional campsites. So, rather than start in a large town, Iwalked to Mauguio for kick off in the morning.

Day 2Started walking at 8.30 in light drizzle but had not got very far before it wasabsolutely bucketing down. Now was the start of the payback time for havingmade no preparation because when walking I have always lined my rucksackwith a plastic dustbin liner. This time I had thrown it in with the rest of the gear,to be sorted later. Result, by the time I got to Castries every stitch of what I hadwas soaking wet. Went to the Information centre in town and found that thecampsite was 4 kilometres north and also an auberge at 5 kilometres which, under the circumstance, seemed a much more attractive option. The staffkindly booked me a room ahead. I arrived at the Hotel an hour later, standingin reception dripping litres of water on to the carpet, I was mighty glad I alreadyhad a booking before the manager had set eyes on me. Once in my room Iswitched all the heating up to max. and hung everything out on every availabledoor and curtain rail, putting my boots upside down on the storage heater, which had something in large red lettering written on it, but this did not applyto me as it was in French.

A lovely morning with the sun shining and all my gear dry, I had even managed todry my passport without any pages sticking together. Started walking at 8.15,arrived at Sommieres 11.30, a fantastic medieval town. I had not been able toappreciate Castries in the pouring rain the previous day, but this one I couldenjoy. Also the campsite is close to the centre which is a very big bonus foranyone on foot.

Day 4Started walking at 9.00. After 30 minutes realised I had missed the small turningthat I had been told about at the campsite. This was really stupid on two counts;I should not have been looking at the motor traffic signs for Quissac as they havenothing to do with me, and if I had walked the few hundred yards to the towncentre I could so easily have been on the correct side of the river. I now faced adecision, do I walk back for half an hour and then north again to a position slightlyfurther west? To me there has always been something defeatist about goingbackwards however sensible it may be at the time, so I continued on and arrivedat Crespian at 12.00. A nice enough campsite but nothing else there.

Day 5The owner of the campsite told me there was no accommodation at Ledignan [15kilometres] but there was a hotel at 25 kilometres. This turned out to be an Etaphotel which is totally automatic. I followed the instructions very carefully butnevertheless it threw my brand new Barclaycard out with the retort that this wasnot a payment card. With not a soul in sight to turn to, I walked on reaching Alesat 5.00, totally shattered with large blisters on both heels and theskin rubbed off the outsides of both little toes - another payback for having nopreparation, but I had never intended to travel so far, so early in the walk.

Day 6Spent the whole day in a hotel at Ales sorting myself out and licking my wounds.I hope the pain may have taught me something about decision making, but Isuspect not; it’s said there is no fool like an old fool. TO BE CONTINUED

Farming CalendarFor us, harvest went well but the rain came at the wrong time for many tofinish gathering their crops and planting for next year. Ideally, oilseed rape isdrilled towards the end of August but this year it was later and we are stillwaiting for it establish as we look out for signs of damage from slugs andcabbage flea beetle. Soon we will start sowing the wheat, when the weatherimproves and we can get on the fields without making a mess.Harvest started on 20th July with oilseeds and finished on 29th August withbeans. Next door were lucky to cart their straw before the rain. It’s a good jobwe no longer have all those small bales to move by hand, now that long, dryharvests seem a thing of the past. The blackberries, damsons, crab apples and sloes are ripening on the hedges. Here’s a very simple recipe for Sloe Gin:1 pint sloes, 1 pint gin, 1 pint sugarPrick the sloes with a fork. Put them in an old lemonade bottle with the sugarand gin. Shake once a day for six weeks. Decant back into the gin bottle (plusoverflow) without the sloes and keep as long as possible for a winter tippleand fine treatment for sore throats!

Bessie Carley - Territorial Force Nursing Service

In late July, Carl was contacted via the Badingham.org.uk website by Dr ChrisPayne OBE. He was writing to ask about the Carley family of Badingham. BessieCarley had nursed Dr Payne’s grandfather who, after surviving the hostilities ofWWI, died of pneumonia in a military hospital in Boulogne. In 1919, Bessie wasan Asst Matron at the hospital and wrote two letters to Mrs Payne concerningher husband’s illness and subsequent death.

She writes: “When the first great sorrow is over you will always have the proudsatisfaction of knowing that he made the Supreme Sacrifice for his country andas one of the Great War Heroes his name will ever remain sacred”.

The same year, Bessie was awarded the Royal Red Cross Military Award forNurses.

Bessie herself died in 1920 and her name was recently added to Badingham’sWar Memorial. You will find her grave in the churchyard.
