45th Annual Golf and Tennis Open ven after forty-five years, the annual Golf and Tennis Open is still the Chaminade Alumni Association’s largest and most successful event. Held this year on Monday, June 22, 2015, it drew a total of 508 golfers, sixteen tennis players, and 620 people for dinner, which, as always, had the atmosphere of a huge alumni reunion. The golfers filled five prestigious courses including Brookville Country Club, The Creek, Nassau Country Club, The Mill River Club, and Wheatley Hills Golf Club, with Nassau also serving as the venue for dinner and for both the silent and live auctions. The Golf Open is the only specifically fund-raising event that the association sponsors, and this year’s was one of the three most successful ever with a gross of over $850,800 and a net of over $493,000. Such an event is a monumental challenge logistically, but the four alumni in photo B (from. l.-r. executive director Bill Basel ’58, co-chairmen Brian Kearns ’91 and Bob Basel ’76, and assistant director Kevin Parente ’82) organized the day like professionals. Prior to dinner Craig Tigh ’72 was named the fourteenth recipient ever of the Crimson and Gold Award, the Alumni Association’s highest award; Craig is pictured in photo A with his five sons (l.-r.) Matt ’01, Ryan ’02, Jack ’15, (Craig,) Colin ’06, and Ed ’12 and also with CHS President Bro. Thomas Cleary ’81. With only sixteen items, this year’s live auction brought in a total of $202,500 through the enthu- siastic efforts of five auctioneers, Dave Gildea ’93 (C), alumni president Gus Nuzzolese ’76 (D), Mike Carey ’67 (E), Joe Coffey ’83 (F), and Tom Healy ’91 (G). The Class Championship foursome this year was from the Class of 1972 and included (from l.-r. in photo H) George Espinosa, John Dussell, Craig Tigh, and John O’Grady. E A B C D E F H G

From the Alumni PresidentGreetings Amazing Alumni,

As you can imagine, when Bro. Richard ’59 and Ed Smith ‘89 asked me to be Alumni President I was ecstatic and grateful. It is thrilling for me to serve humbly as your Alumni President and I am even more excited about the pos-sibilities next year. Chaminade, the Marianists and the Marianist mission represent powerful life ideals, values and standards for me and my relationships with you, my wife Mary Frances, family, friends and well… everyone I meet.

Over the past 30 years, I have worn my Chaminade ring daily, as a constant reminder of the importance of Chaminade in my life and its motto, Fortes in Unitate…Strength in Unity. Those 3 precious words are emblazoned on the

hearts of every alumnus, carrying out the spirit and teachings that Blessed William Joseph Chaminade professed. When you read below about the people and events that fuel the Flyer engine, you will feel the power and glory of Fortes in Unitate. First let’s celebrate the Big Four Flyers who have dedicated their hearts and souls to Chaminade. Bro. Thomas Cleary ’81, President, Bro. Richard Hartz ’59, Direc-tor of Development and Alumni Relations, Principal Bro. Joseph Bellizzi ’78 and Bill Basel ’58, Executive Director of the Golf and Tennis Open, and their outstand-ing teammates who work ceaselessly in organizing, developing and delivering all of the alumni events with Flyer grace and joy: Deborah Kendric, Assistant Director of Development and Alumni Relations, Kevin Parente ’82 Assistant Director of Alumni Relations and Chris Hanley ‘80, Senior Development Officer. I also offer special warm thanks to the Alumni Vice-Presidents, Jeffrey Martin ’71, Paul Annunziato ’87, Erik Sulzbach ’92 and Matthew Basirico ’02 who assist in a variety of ways, either through attendance, ideas, spirit and job openings. And a final Crimson celebratory thanks goes to Ed Smith ’89, Past Alumni President, who has been my dear friend, mentor and leader for many years. As your President, I try to attend as many events as possible because seeing the Crimson spirit in action is incredibly inspiring and enriching and I encourage all of you to attend, participate, volunteer and lead. We are always seeking new Crimson blood, and new ideas from our alumni. Remember…Communicate, Participate and of course, Donate. One of our new initiatives this year in our ongoing effort to keep communicating with our Alumni was to develop an online video to help you utilize the Chaminade Alumni Directory which gives you access to nearly 22,000 Flyers. Once you view the video and update your profile, you will be amazed how easy it is to connect with your classmates and friends. We also have a Chaminade Alumni LinkedIn Page. Please stay connected to the Flyers. Below are the chapter presidents, professional association presidents, and event chairmen whom we graciously thank for their unselfish time, terrific talents and warm hospitality in a variety of ways, either through generously hosting events or personally spearheading all of the logistics of recruiting and embracing alumni:BOSTON Jonathan Kuczmarski ’98 • SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Christopher Donnelly ’95 • NORTHERN CALIFORNIA Edward Perks ’88 CHICAGO CHAPTER William Barbino ’85 • CONNECTICUT/WEST-CHESTER David Maloof ’76 • GREATER DELAWARE VALLEY CHAPTER Geoffrey Beauchamp ’69 • SOUTHEAST FLORIDA Ronald Malanowski ’86 SOUTHWEST FLORIDA Christopher Kuzler ’81 • WASHINGTON D.C. There are several Flyers who generously hosted events and I would like to acknowledge them as well: Tim Uehlinger ’78 (Southern CA), Don Schroeder ’63

(Northern CA Event), Michael and Linda Roemer CAPA (SW Florida Chapter), Chris Ruddy ’83 (SE Florida Chapter), Don Foley ’69 (CT/Westchester Chapter), Bill Walsh ’75 (Washington DC Chapter Event), Anthony Patten ’87 (Lawyers Summer Social), and Chris Cornetta ’80 (Yearbook Distribution Barbecue). A special thanks is also due to Dan Zimmon ’82 of Adelhardt Construction who hosted our Real Estate and Wall St. Association cocktail parties at his offices with panoramic views located on the top floor of One Penn Plaza. There are so many events that take place throughout the year to keep us con-nected. Below are some noted highlights from this past year:• Our new athletic arena, Gold Star Stadium, was dedicated and named in honor of the 56 Alumni who gave their lives for our freedom. • The Class of 1964 celebrated their 50th reunion in October presenting the largest class gift in Chaminade history at $366,000.• We hosted our first Entrepreneurs Workshop initiated by Kent Martin ’90 and thank Flyers Tom Higgins ’63, Scott Kiley ’82, John Murcott ’86, and Mike Taormina ’01, for imparting their wisdom of creating and sustaining your ownbusiness. • Fr. Dan Nash ’81 was the guest speaker at our Alumni Day of Recollection conveying pearls of wisdom and peacefulness, ending in the Sacrament of Pen-ance, Mass and dinner…really special. • The premier event in March was the NYC Cocktail Party and Distinguished Alumnus Award occur-ring at the New York Athletic Club as over 320 Alumni, families and friends honored Dick Kearns ‘68 for his years of outstanding wisdom, service, humor and spirit. • The Class of 1990 showed great Flyer pride as close to 100 classmates attended the event where they presented Bro. Tom with a class gift of approximately $100,000 to Chaminade.• We hosted our first Goldman Sachs Invest-ment Banking Workshop providing Bloomberg and Financial train-ings to our graduating seniors. Special thanks to Mike Sutton ’09 for spearheading this event. • Anthony Patten ’87 hosted a Lawyers Summer Social in Our Lady’s Courtyard, another new event with a solid turnout and excellent potential.• The Granddaddy of Alumni events is our Golf & Tennis Open. I always view the Golf & Tennis Open as a Holy Day and once again it was a fantastic Flyersuccess grossing over $850,000 with over 600 joyous Flyers in attendance. Ad-ditionally, the unique Crimson & Golf Award was presented to the invincible Craig Tigh ’72 for his outstanding years of dedicated service. A special personal thanks to my indefatigable mother in law, Kay Lynch who sold over $3,300 worth of morning raffle tickets for the new Driver, in less than 2 hours! And she’s the mother/grandmother of 7 Alumni. Unbelievable Crimson charisma.• On June 24th, I had the privilege and honor to travel to Washington DC to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with Bro. Tom, Skip Orr ’61 and Lt. Col Christopher Meyers ’92 in honor of our Gold Star Alumni and their families. • Lastly, in June, we warmly welcomed our new 417 alumni Flyers who will con-tinue to carry the Torch of Faith, Family and the Marianist mission in their lives, similar to the current nearly 22,000 alumni throughout the world. I am very much looking forward to seeing as many alumni as possible at these wonderful alumni events, celebrating the Crimson & Gold, Chaminade and you.

Retirement In late June, Chuck Mansfield ’62 announced that after serving as a Development Officer at Chaminade for the past 23 years he was retiring from that position. During those years he has served as a member of the Torch Committee, he assisted with Chaminade’s two capital campaigns and wrote numerous articles for the Chaminade News. In recent years, Chuck has also served as a valuable mentor and aid to many young alumni in their job searches. Even before joining the staff formally, Chuck had served as Alumni Associa-tion president from 1989-1992 and had helped to run numerous alumni events, most notably as chair of a special testimonial in honor of former football coach and athletic director Joseph F. Thomas. Likewise he has been a member of both the Alumni Board and the Golf & Tennis Open Committee for over 25 years; he plans to continue in those two capacities.
