Sierra Leone’s Refugee All StarsSaturday, April 30, 2011 @ 8pm

Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars burst onto the world stage in 2006 with the help of a moving documentary film that told the powerful and inspirational story of the group’s formation in a West African refugee camp. From these humble beginnings, the band went on to release one of the most acclaimed world music releases in the past few years, “Living Like A Refugee”. The title track of the album was recorded by the light of an oil lamp in Sembakounya Refugee Camp in Guinea, West Africa. The band sang and laughed into the night, healing and being healed by their music. You will

feel inspired and honored to have been part of their journey.

“As harrowing as these personal tales may be, the music buoying them is uplifting. The cliché bears repeating: music heals and creates community.”

- Stephen Holden, New York Times

Silver Screen Scoop!

By Joseph J. Airdo

The stage is already set over at Walt Disney Pictures to produce a follow-up to this weekend’s teen dramedy “Prom.” Screenwriter Katie Wech will pen the po-tential sequel, which is expected to focus on the sophomore students featured in the current film. Rumor has it that the studio hopes to have the project prepped for the same release slot next year.

Director Kevin Munroe talks shooting ‘Dylan Dog’

By Stan Robinson

‘Dylan Dog: Dead of Night’ based on

the hit Italian comic books, has a lot of action, stunts, and special effects in support of the basic theme, I asked how many days of shooting, did it take. Kevin Munroe who directed, chuckled and threw the question back at me with “You’re a First (Assistant Director), how many days would you say it would take?” I guessed about 45 days and with 2nd unit, I rounded it out to around 50 days or so.

Kevin responded with 35 days with 2 of those days for 2nd unit! Unbelievable, sounds like the pacing for a television series, not a feature film. How did you pull that off, I responded with all ears for his answer! “You just have to hit set and know what you wanted, we ended up doing it a lot like an advertising shoot. Basically I storyboarded everything the night before and put it up on the wall and say these are the 30 shots we want to get today, lets go get them! And as soon as I got them, I didn’t spend time trying to kill something that was already working!”

I mentioned to Kevin director Clint East-wood’s style of a couple or 3 takes, which is the pacing I learned working on a few TV series, the first few takes are the best for the energy level by cast and crew…

“There’s a really good energy to it, and when ever I do anything in the future when I do have more time, I think I’m still going to try to maintain that same kind of pace and get even more out of it!” says Kevin.

Producer Phil Rosenthal talks ‘Exporting Raymond’

By Stan Robinson

It’s often said that emulation is the tru-est form of a compliment. And that is what television producer Phil Rosenthal felt when he was contacted with word that his hit American sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond” was in consideration by a Russian TV producer for a Russian audience.

For Phil it would prove to be the experi-ence of a lifetime as documentary cam-eras captured the process for ‘comedic posterity’ as he set out for Russia to start the process of adaptation. During our breakfast meet, Phil shared with great comedic passion and true persona form “The head of Sony called me in a few years ago and said ‘They’ve created the sitcom business in Russia’, the sitcom as a form didn’t exist until Sony brought them the American show ‘Nanny’, trans-lated it, and it became the first Russian sitcom!”

Next up for them was ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ for Russian television. The American concept for sitcoms involves a few factors, like a studio audience, and I asked Phil how did that go with the Rus-sian production team… Phil chuckles in his exuberance “Oh, it gets better, they didn’t want an audience mainly because it cost too much money, and I said its important to ‘this’ show, not all shows, just Raymond, its designed like a play in front of an audience! I explained to them that we don’t have a lot of cutting outside, going here, going there, its long scenes with people talking a lot of the time in a room, and the audience helps it like a play. And it gets better Stan, as the talks progressed!” says Phil.

The Greatest Interview Ever Conducted

By Joseph J. Airdo

Riding the elevator to the 21st floor of Hyatt’s Regency hotel afforded me a gorgeous bird’s eye view of downtown Phoenix.

After entering Morgan Spurlock’s suite, the writer, director, producer and star of the new documentary “Pom Wonder-ful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold” promptly asked if I was interested in a pastry. I politely declined but he fol-lowed up his previous offer with one that I found simply irresistible – an ice-cold glass of 100 percent pomegranate-blueberry juice.

“You don’t happen to have a spare pair of Merrell shoes, do you?” I asked, testing the filmmaker’s generosity. “Perhaps in a size 10-and-a-half?”

Spurlock laughed but the answer was no. I guessed that Ralph Nader, who makes a cameo in “Pom Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold,” snatched up his last remaining pair. I therefore decided against request-ing my complementary Mini. Instead, I sat down across the table from Spurlock and asked my first question, about how he comes up with the topics of his films.

“My producing partner Jeremy [Chilnik] and I started talking about all of the terrible product placement we had seen in movies and TV shows and the perva-siveness of marketing and advertising at large,” said Spurlock, noting that an episode of “Heroes” in which Hayden Panettiere’s character gushes over the Nissan Rogue particularly sparked his interest.

As I took a sip from my ice-cold glass of 100 percent pomegranate-blueberry juice, Spurlock interrupted himself to ask, “That Pom’s good, right?” I savored the luscious and tangy flavor and nodded while laughing, to which the filmmaker added, “It’s good stuff.”

Reviewers’ Roundup!

The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly Entertain-ment Magazine’s Film Section contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this weekend’s new releases. Read Jo-seph J. Airdo, Randy Montgomery and Stan Robinson’s full reviews exclusively online at Examiner.com, AZWeeklyMagazine.com and ScreenScene.org, respectively.

‘Exporting Raymond’

Television producer Phil Rosenthal meets with resistance when he tries to adapt his hit American sitcom “Every-body Loves Raymond” for a Russian audience. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG – 86 minutes)

Joseph: “Not your typical documentary, ‘Exporting Raymond’ is a frequently funny fish-out-of-water tale as seen through the eyes on Phil Rosenthal’s ex-traordinarily expressive face. Thanks to broad comedy about the frustration as-sociated with brain-barriers of all shapes and sizes, a familiarity with ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ or an appreciation of its humor is not necessary, though it will certainly enhance the viewer’s experi-ence.” Grade: B

Stan: “Admittedly not having watched the television series. The process of try-ing to maintain the basic theme of one’s project, when the interest of a foreign country to present it, with language and the essence of what is funny as is crosses to other cultures, is fascinating. Add to that producer Phil Rosenthal as we see him ‘put through the paces’ in support of his show is wonderfully entertaining. Without him, its just another interesting documentary, with him, it becomes an exceptional look at the creative process.” Grade: B+

‘Henry’s Crime’

After serving time for a crime he did not

commit, a man (Keanu Reeves) con-spires with his former cellmate (James Caan) to rob a bank for real. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 108 minutes)

Joseph: “Quite the quirky comedy, ‘Henry’s Crime’s’ greatest asset is star Keanu Reeves’ seemingly confused performance. Although that sounds like a bad thing, the actor’s trademark dis-oriented demeanor makes a movie cast with characters boasting unconventional values and motivations oddly entertain-ing. Granted, it is all kind of absurd but there is a novel charm in that.” Grade: C

Stan: “The understated style of Keanu Reeves plays well for the main character who seems to be easily manipulated by all those around him as he turns out to be the master at manipulation and a perfect balance to veteran actor James Caan’s exceptional performance. ‘Hen-ry’s Crime’ presents an eclectic, off-beat, and quirky story with a lot of heart and priceless comedic moments along the way.” Grade: B

‘Hoodwinked Too: Hood vs. Evil’

Red (Hayden Panettiere) and Wolf (Pat-rick Warburton) are asked to investigate the disappearance of Hansel and Gretel. (PG – 85 minutes)

Stan: “This next chapter in the ‘Hood-winked modern take’ on the Red Riding Hood classic follows the further adven-tures with more than enough innuendo and classic ‘genre’ references for the old, and it held the attention of the young-sters in attendance, with the 3D almost a non-factor for adding to or taking away from the presentation. A high point, Cheech and Chong as two of the three pigs! Grade: B

Now Playing!

The following new releases were not screened in time for AZ Weekly Entertain-ment Magazine’s press deadline. Read Jo-seph J. Airdo, Randy Montgomery and Stan Robinson’s full reviews exclusively online at Examiner.com, AZWeeklyMagazine.com and ScreenScene.org, respectively.

‘Dirty Mind’

A shy loser (Wim Helsen) wakes up after an accident suffering from a case of Frontal Syndrome and has been trans-formed into a smooth-talking no-holds-barred stuntman. Everyone hopes that he’ll soon recover, but he likes his new self. Playing exclusively at the Film Bar in downtown Phoenix, AZ.

‘Dylan Dog: Dead of Night’

The adventures of supernatural private eye Dylan Dog (Brandon Routh) who seeks out the monsters of the Louisiana bayou in his signature red shirt, black jacket, and blue jeans. (PG-13)

‘Eat the Sun’

Director Peter Sorcher’s documentary about the ancient practice of sun gazing, and one man’s passage into that world. (81 minutes) Playing exclusively at the Film Bar in downtown Phoenix, AZ.

‘Fast Five’

Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and Dom Torretto (Vin Diesel) join forces with for-mer friends and foes (Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris) to confront a corrupt businessman who wants them dead. (PG-13 – 130 minutes)

‘Prom’

Intersecting stories unfold as high-school students (Aimee Teegarden, Thomas McDonell and Yin Chang) prepare for their seminal event. (PG – 93 minutes)

WWW.CANTEENTEQUILABAR.COMBritish Open Pub Holds Royal Wedding Crashers Party Scottsdale Restaurant Offers a Royal Party, Special Cocktail for the Masses

Didn’t get your invitation to the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29th? Neither did the folks at British Open Pub in Scott-sdale so they’re staging a wedding party for the uninvited.

The popular British pub has even whipped up a special drink for the occasion and is offering it for half price throughout the day, as British Open Pub televisions replay the wed-ding and patrons dine on traditional English fare. The drink, dubbed the “The Royal Snub”, will be only $4 all day – half the normal price.

The “The Royal Snub” features Parrot Bay coconut rum, Patron Citron-age (orange-flavored tequila) and a splash of orange juice on the rocks.

“We don’t need a wedding invitation to have a good time,” said British Open Pub owner Gregg Troilo. “When

you combine our food, drink specials, pub atmosphere and plenty of cheer, British Open Pub will be way more fun than Westminster Abbey or London on April 29.”

According to news reports, more than 1,900 royal wedding invitations were delivered to dignitaries, family mem-bers and celebrities. Among those rumored to be on the list are David Beckham, Kanye West, Elton John and Parliament. British Open Pub patrons have some good company on the non-invited list: President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, were not extended an invitation to the April 29 nuptials.

“At least we’re not the only important people that weren’t invited,” Troilo said, laughing. The British Open Pub is located at 1334 N. Scottsdale Road in Scottsdale, Arizona, on the southwest corner of Scottsdale and McDowell roads. Visit www.the-britishopenpub.com or call (480) 941-4915 for more information. Cinco de Mayo DUI? The Law Office of Corso&Rhude Can Help! Former Maricopa County Pros-ecutors are Proven Arizona DUI Attorneys

Cinco de Mayo signals the start of summer fun each year. It also means DUI task forces will be out on Valley streets looking for people driving while intoxicated. Last year, more than 170 Arizonans were arrested on Cinco de Mayo for drunk driving. Another two dozen were arrested for drug offenses by DUI task forces. And while having a designated driver or calling a cab is the obvious safe choice, those arrested during Cinco de Mayo last year failed to use either option.

DUI charges in Arizona are a seri-ous matter. Even a first offense carries mandatory jail time with it. That’s why such cases require experienced Arizona DUIdefense lawyers, according to the Law Office of Corso&Rhude. DUI in Arizona is a criminal offense punishable by up to six months in the county jail and up to a $2,500 fine plus an 84 percent surcharge. The experienced Arizona DUI attorneys at Corso&Rhude will represent you in your DUI defense case and work hard to protect your rights.

“Arizona law requires that anyone found guilty of a first offense DUI

must serve a mandatory jail sen-tence,” said Christopher Corso of the Law Office of Corso&Rhude, which specializes in DUIdefense charges in Phoenix. “The fines for DUI can be se-vere and the law requires an interlock device, as well as, other restrictions on your driving privileges.”

If you’re charged with a DUI in Phoenix, it is critical to your case that you get a strong defense team with experienced DUI defense lawyers working for you as soon as possible. The Arizona DUIdefense attorneys at the Law Office of Corso&Rhude do everything in their power to protect your family and advocate for your rights. They have the experience and expertise to deal with DUI charges in Arizona and will fight to get the charges dismissed and preserve your family.

Every DUIdefense case in Arizona is different and the outcome is de-pendent upon the specific facts and circumstances surrounding the DUI charges, which makes having an ex-perienced Arizona DUI defense attor-ney even more important. “The Law Office of Corso&Rhude wants to help make sure a DUI charge doesn’t ruin your life,” Rhude said. “We’ll fight for your family and your future.”

To schedule a free consultation, please visit www.corsorhude.com or call (602) 254-3188. The Law Office of Corso&Rhude, PLLC is located at 9210 W. Union Hills Drive, Suite 102, Peoria, Arizona, 85382.

the Mexican community in California celebrated the victory starting in 1863 and the observance has pretty much been continuous ever since. Like many trends, Cinco celebrations spread from California to other states and developed in to a cultural cel-ebration, much like St. Patrick’s Day, Chinese New Year and Oktoberfest have become in this country. Com-munities with larger Mexican popula-tions embraced the day more than others. That certainly explains why Arizona puts so much energy in to the day. It does not, however, explain why Birmingham Alabama, which has a Mexican population so small it is included in the category “other ethnic groups”, makes such a big deal on May 5th.

We’ve gone two paragraphs without once mentioning beer, well that’s

about to change. Because Mexican beer has become such a big part of our culture, it’s only natural that these beers take center stage for Cinco. There are some domestic beers produced in an effort to repli-cate Mexican styles, but why drink a pretender when you can have the real thing? There are two major Mexican brewing companies, Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma and Grupo Modelo. The latter, as you might suspect, are responsible for the two Modelo beers, Especial and Negra. The Especial is a tasty pale lager produced in the style of most Mexican beers. Negra Modelo is thought by most Ameri-cans to be the best of the beers from south of the border. It is a dark Vi-enna Lager style beer brewed in the German tradition. It has a little more

body and flavor than most Mexican beers, so it brings a different drink-ing experience. Modelo also makes Pacifico and a small brand called Corona. Corona is a phenomenon unto itself. First produced in 1925, it has become the number one Mexican beer in the world. It is also one of the top ten selling beers of any kind. Available in bottles only because they feel that “the best taste experience and maximum enjoyment comes from the glass bottle”, they have foregone a draft product. And, this year for the first time you can enjoy Victoria as part of your celebration. Long kept as a Mexican secret, and the most popu-lar beer in Mexico. This beer has hit the United States and is taking it by storm. No other import beer sold one

Cinco de Mayo

May 5th…or Cinco de Mayo for you lovers of the Battle of Puebla. We are all clear that Cinco de Mayo is not the Mexican Independence Day, aren’t we? Okay, great. That day is celebrated on September 16th and commemorates the call for separa-tion from Spanish Rule. Cinco de Mayo is more of a regional event commemorating the Mexican army’s upset victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 15, 1862. The holiday is fairly minor in most of Mexico, with the obvious exception of Puebla. It isn’t even considered an obligatory federal holiday, just a voluntary one.

So, how did Cinco (we are on a first name basis) become such a big deal in the USA? For whatever reason,

Moctezuma has the other well known Mexican beers, the most popular of which are the Dos Equis brands. The Special Lager is a Mexican style Pale Lager and Amber is a Vienna Lager, a little different than the Negra Modelo, but the same basic style. However the original beer from this brew-ery was Carta Blanca which was taken from the French, “Carte Blanche”, meaning blank check. Other beers from this brewery include Sol, Tecate and

Bohemia. Bohemia is a European style pilsner brewed in the Czech tra-dition. Tecate is sometimes credited with starting the habit of putting a lime in Mexican beers. It seems they had a brewmaster of Scottish descent and adopted the tradition from Great Britain of providing sailors a lime with their daily beer ration to help prevent scurvy. And, we would be remiss if we didn’t remind you that Dos Equis

does employ The Most Interesting Man in the World. Stay thirsty, my friends!

Where do you find all these beers on Cinco? You don’t have to go far. Just about any Mexican restaurant is going to have something going on. You can check the Cinco section of this very publication for details. Much like St. Patrick’s Day, many of these events start as early as noon

and will be in full stride as the work day ends. Get there early as there may be lines at many locations later in the evening. If you decide to stay home, pick up a couple of bottles of Corona Familiar. This beer is sold in a caguama (turtle) bottle, sometimes called a ballenas (whale), meaning a 33 ounce oddly shaped bottle which is a traditional bottle for home con-sumption in Mexico. Once you see them you will understand the names.

Most of the time, this column is about craft beers, but Cinco is one of those holidays that demand a break from tradition. If you’re a craft beer drinker, just embrace the spirit for one day, and enjoy a Corona or Tecate or Victoria.

Enjoy Cinco de Mayo, responsibly of course, and relax with some enjoy-able Mexican beer. Don’t worry about what food you are pairing it with. Cinco is about friends and fun, and celebrating the Mexican culture. At least that’s my plan.

McDowell Mountain Music Festival April 29th-May 1st Grab your folding chairs, your blankets and your friends for it is time to relax the day away at the McDowell Moun-tain Music Festival. Started in 2004, the idea was to bring music back to the community by throwing a show and giving a 100% of proceeds to charities helping children. This good cause blew up in success and became an annual spring event with musicians from all over. An overflow of bands in genres ranging from southern, to soul, indie-pop, rock and blues will be playing far into the night. Check the website for line ups and show times. The concert will take place amidst green grass, a shaded canopy and a cooled down restaurant to rejuvenate in if needed. Come for part of the day or stay for all 3, either way have a beer, make some friends, toast to life and the pre-heatstroke weather. www.mmmf.net

Stand UP Live April 29th-30th CityScape in downtown Phoenix has a new edition to the nightlife scene. The grand opening of the Stand UP Live Theater is here! This new comedy spot will showcase the funniest and wit-tiest touring stand-up comics today. Fitting 600 people but still being able to keep it intimate, the experience will be unmatched thanks to a state of the art sound and video system. Enjoy some signature cocktails or order din-ner from the local celebrity chef menu. To kick off the celebration with a bang, comedian Jo Koy will be first in line to pop the new stage’s cherry. Oh Snap! You probably know Jo from his regular comedic spot at Chelsea Lately’s round table. Laugh alongside Jo as he raves on about being Asian, having a kid and the everyday things that make life worth making fun of. Upcoming comics include Carlos Mencia, Rodney Carrington and Mitch Fatel. standu-plive.com 480-719-6100

Bazaar of the Bizarre Party April 30th Remember when you were a kid and dress-up was ok, in fact it was “cute”…?? Something then happened as we got older and honestly a bit lamer. However, some of us have kept our imagination and act out on it in costume galore! A group named “The Dark Ones” keep the magic alive by incorporating fantasy and the medi-eval era into hosted events. Throw on a shawl and give the Bazaar of the Bizarre Party a shot. Drinks, belly dancers, prizes, vendors, trinkets and of course nothing says “par-tay” like food on a stick, are you convinced yet? Come play to forget that cubicle that’s waiting for you on Monday. www.darkones.org

Gay Skate April 28th You know that one pair of tube socks you never seem to be able to rock? Well it is time to bust them out, and hopefully they are neon. This all ages event invites you to grab your roller skates and dance-skate for a good cause with a portion of the proceeds going to Gays&Lesbians Against Discrimination. DJ Tsunami will be spinning tracks for your ears and your roller-ed feet for this roller party. 8-10:30pm at Great Skate Glendale.

‘A View From a Fan’ 28 April 2011

Thursday April 25 starts a nice long home stand including three games against the Philadelphia Phillies (April 25-27), four games against the Chicago Cubs (April 28-May1), and three against the Colorado Rockies (May 2-5).

The games against the Cubs will be bittersweet because I’m a born and raised Chicagoan, on the South Side and grew up a White Sox fan. North side residents are inherently Cubs fans. Whichever team goes the deep-est into the playoff season got the support of the entire city. I’ve made it a rule that whatever city I’m living, I support those hometown teams. With the cities of Chicago, Orlando, and now Phoenix, I’ve had the oppor-tunity to experience a lot of baseball!

The next edition of ‘A View From a Fan’ I’ll pass along those aspects explored during my visit to Chase Field, the home of the D’Backs, for this latest home stand run. So far, I’ve got my eye on the swimming pool located behind the right field fence, with a few of the other amenities including the Suite Lounge, Strike Zone, Miller Lite Diamond Club, Peter Piper Playhouse, Left Field Sand Lot Kids Zone, Right Field Beer Garden, and the Lexus Club as possible stops. I’ll keep you posted!

Remember to bring your Walkman to catch the D’Backs while watching the games and be sure it’s tuned to 620 KTAR-AM for the masterful team of Greg Schulte, Tom Candiotti, and Jeff Munn. With the Smartphone apps available, there’s nothing like

the game being called in one ear and the roar of the crowd with the Chase Field sound system ‘promptings’ in the other!

For the latest on the Arizona Dia-mondbacks with game analysis’, articles and a whole lot more, visit ‘Arizona Diamondbacks Examiner’ Mark Brown at Examiner.com. Think-ing of adding a movie to your entertainment weekend, visit ScreenScene.org for what’s hot.

Stan Robinson, a movie reviewer for the Film Section of AZ Weekly Enter-tainment Magazine, enjoys plays, live jazz, and live sports as a balance to the multitude of movies screened for review. Until next time from ‘A View From a Fan’, GO D’BACKS!

The Rising - Springsteen Tribute at

910 Live

April 29th 2011 The Rising is a brotherhood of friends performing songs spanning nearly five decades; from “Greetings from Asbury Park” through Springsteen’s 2009 release “Working on a Dream”, they deliver each song with the same power, heart, and soul as Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band did

so flawlessly well night after night. Their passion is real. Their talent is real. Their blood, sweat, and tears are real. There are no pre-recorded tracks, or pretend playing. There is no make-up, or make believe voices. The band uses all of its collective power to hold true to the artistic vision, to both honor the artist and the fans. A show you won’t want to miss!

Bodacious BeautyMust-Have Summer Makeup

ChapstickAn oldie but a goodie, Chapstick or any type of lip moisturizer is a must for summer – especially in Arizona. Make sure your lip balm is rich in SPF for ultimate summer sun protection.

All NaturelGood news for you, a fresh face for summer is all the rage. This June, July and August, it’s all about light mas-cara, perfect powder and cheekbone-enhancing blush.

Be BoldIf all naturel isn’t your thing, bold eye shadows and lipstick are hot for sum-mer. From banging blues, ravishing reds and loud yellows, bright colors are highlighting this summer makeup trends.

Brooke BrowsPut your tweezers away because Brook Shield eyebrows are back in this summer. Strongly shaping brows

top the list as one of this summer’s biggest beauty trends.

Smeared SmokyFunkify your eyes with the decon-structed smoky eye. This newest sum-mer look is all about a messy smoky look that keeps the lid heavy with shadow and the lower lash line bare.
