“This Is It”, Michael Jackson’s last, is revealing!
Review by Stan Robinson
Most expected, as this reviewer, a lot of commentary, musical clips, and the glitz & glamour that normally surrounds the ”King of Pop”. What we get is the creative process along with the hard work, long hours, and tenacity of the persons involved, in preparation for the most ambitious tour of each of their lives.
We get a rare, behind-the-scenes look at Michael Jackson as he developed, created and rehearsed for his sold-out concerts that would have taken place beginning this summer in London. The months from April through June 2009 are highlighted from more than one hundred hours of behind-the-scenes footage, as it captures Michael Jackson the singer, dancer, filmmaker, architect, and creative genius as he prepares for what was to be his final concert tour. Aspects of the creative relationship between Kenny Ortega, Michael Jackson’s creative partner and the director of the stage show, the audition process of the dancers chosen for the tour, and the shooting of the audio/visual segments to be used for the show, are among the many insights shared in “This Is It”.
One aspect for me, it was amazing how Michael Jackson at 50 years old, kept pace with dancers half his age during rehearsals. At 112 minutes, “This Is It” seems to go by in an
instant, and when it finally comes to DVD after its limited engagement run, it will be that collector’s item that is sure to get multiple viewings!
Directed by Kenny Ortega. Rated PG for some suggestive choreography and scary images. Sony Pictures Releasing release. Runtime: 112 minutes.
In “The Fourth Kind”, a psychologist discovers traumatized patients might be the result of alien abduction starring, Milla Jovovich, Elias Koteas, and Will Patton.
The documentary “No Impact Man” follows a Manhattan, New York family as they abandon their high consumption 5th Avenue lifestyle, and try to live a year while making no environmental impact.

A CHEF DEBUT WITH A BANG
Locavore Winemaker Dinner Set for November 12 at Caffe Boa
Foodies and Wine-O’s alike won’t want to miss this one : Highly-acclaimed Chef Payton Curry of Caffe Boa is introducing his fl air for fi ne wine and foods with a winemaker dinner set for November 12.
Curry’s passion for using locally-grown and seasonal ingredients is well-known in the Valley and beloved by many at his former post with the now-defunct Digestif. Curry has harnessed his skill, passion and signature style for a one-of-a-kind food and wine showcase that will be his fi rst winemaker dinner since joining the Caffe Boa team.
The six-course “Locavore” menu scheduled for the evening uses only locally-sourced ingredients and incorporates his Black Mesa Ranch Berkshire grass-fed pig, along with other delectable items on the menu. Each course has been paired with a wine by Lioco Winery—the 2009 Winery of the Year by Wine & Spirits— and has been hand-picked to bring out and compliment the fl avors of each and every bite.
A longtime locale for organic and sustainable gourmet dining, Caffe Boa still sources more than 90% of its products from local farms, markets
and gourmet food proprietors. Owner Jay Wisniewski credits Boa’s commitment to local sourcing and sustainability to the enhanced quality and taste of the products derived from local sources, a philosophy shared by Curry. “I am very excited to show guests how locally-sourced foods can truly come together and make for a great meal,” Curry said, “Especially when paired with a fi ne wine,” Curry said.
Guests can enjoy the Lioco Winemaker Dinner for $79 which includes six courses and each wine
pairing. Conversations by Curry and Lioco Winery Owner, Matt Licklider, will enhance the evening. Reservations begin at 6pm and are
highly recommended by calling (480) 968-9112. Caffe Boa is located at 398 S Mill Ave # 110 Tempe, AZ 85281

Brent Diggins is a freelance writer, Valley resident and PR professional at Mindspace, a Valley public relations, marketing and advertising firm. He has been involved in many aspects of the Valley social scene, and considers himself on expert on
many things of great global importance, including having a good time. You can reach him at [email protected].

If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to [email protected] “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events.
There is so much going on around the Valley this time of year that it gets overwhelming. Isn’t it great that you have someone to whittle all these choices down to only the “must-dos” for you on a weekly basis? That’d be me and most writers don’t say this enough, but thanks for reading and keeping the Night Owl flying. To find out what happened, is happening and will happen around the Valley this week, read on.
Luci’s Marketplace Grand Re-Opening: Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to visit Luci’s Marketplace or Richardson’s restaurant before the fire that destroyed both of the prominent Phoenix destinations three moths ago. Reading all of the local tweets after the fire made me realized how significant both businesses were to the community and how I, and all of us, need to explore and appreciate what’s in our own back yard. That said here is your chance. Renewed and strengthened by fire, Luci’s Marketplace will be celebrating its grand re-opening with music, samplings, giveaways, and honoring the heroes of the Phoenix Fire department with a plaque this Sunday, November 8 from 12 – 4 p.m. Whether you’re a first-timer like me or a an old friend, Luci’s will be welcoming you in with an open coffee bar, pro cooking demonstrations in the Viking expo kitchen, and samplings throughout the market, including free milk and cookies for kids. Everyone who enters the raffle will have a chance to win raffles prizes, and shoppers can save 10% on all products, except alcohol, throughout the marketplace from 4- 8 p.m. See you there! www.LucisHealthyMarketplace.com
Arizona State Fair: So maybe you accidentally missed Bob Dylan perform, and purposefully skipped, Raven-Symone’s, but are you really going to miss a chance to witness The Arizona Derby Dames, all girl roller-derby, mini-tournament? If you’ve never been to a roller-derby tournament you have not seen some of the best and most competitive athletes go head to head. This mini-tournament, free with paid admission to the Arizona State Fair on November 5, is only a taste of an all-out brawling roller-derby match, but it will ignite your roll-derby fire and will leave you wanting more. Come see the Bombshells, Coffin Draggers, Schoolyard Scrappers, and Runaway Brides battle it out to see who will take on the recent 2009 champions, the Brutal Beauties, in the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. Oh yeah, and while you there don’t forget to enjoy the rest of the fair’s treats like rides, games, and fried and sweetened everything! www.azstatefair.com
The Compund: A new music venue is heading into the shopping center at the 101 and Scottsdale called The Compound Grill, and this has caused great joy in the Night Owl household. The grand opening will be Saturday November 7th and one of my new faves, Jackie Greene, will be performing. The Compound was founded by the producers of the McDowell Mountain Music Festival, which gives it instant credibility in my book. They will host both
national acts and local acts regularly, and by the looks of the schedule, they are all super high quality. Plus the music is pretty eclectic featuring everything from folk and acoustic to jazz and blues. On Thursdays, they have a “Writers Night” which will be a songwriters showcase featuring a variety of local acts in a showcase format. Sounds like a great place to find some new local music to dig on. Not to get too carried away with the music, they also have a pretty interesting menu featuring “Southwest “fresh” selections, with the majority of our ingredients incorporating a local first, farm-to-table, organic philosophy.” Just check the menu, calendar and venue out at thecompoundgrill.com.
Celeb Golfing #1: Valley homeboy Alice Cooper will be hosting his 13th Annual Alice Cooper Pro-Am Golf Tournament at the Los Caballeros Golf Course in Wickenburg on Saturday, November 7th. Like most Cooper events, proceeds will go to charity, this time Solid Rock, which helps out teens. If you want to sign up to play or need more information visit alicegolf.com. Oh, after the golf, Halo of Flies, an Alice Cooper tribute band comprised of Fender employees and Alice Cooper, will perform.
Celeb Golfing #2: While Alice Cooper has the rock celeb golf thing going, baseball players Torii Hunter (Anaheim Angels) and the Diamondback’s own Justin Upton will be hosting the Torii Hunter Celebrity Golf Classic on November 10th and 11th. Ball players like Ozzie Smith, Darryl Strawberry, Derek Lee, Tony Clark, Eddie Murray, Dustin Pedroia, Chris Young, Don Baylor, Jenny Finch, Kenny Lofton, and Mark Grace will be attending. Of course, it is all for charity too as it benefits The Heart of a Champion, Telios Preparatory Academy in Phoenix and Sacaton Middle School on the Gila River Indian Reservation. For tickets and more info visit torrihunter.com.
Learn How Men Think: Where are my ladies at? Do you wonder what goes on inside of men’s brains and do you want do find out how to communicate with men, what they want in a woman, what they think about women who sleep with them on a first date and much more? Learn from the experts as acclaimed life coaches Michael Lindstrom and Dan Lier host a provocative social symposium for women at Scottsdale’s Mondrian Hotel on November 12th. In addition to the event, attendees will enjoy $5 drink specials on Skyy vodka cocktails and martinis, $5 X Rated Fusion Liqueur cocktails and martinis, and $5 glasses of Martini & Rossi Rose Champagne. Want more? Swag bags, complimentary valet and food will compliment the evening. Best part? It’s free to attend. Now, here’s a “guy” tip. Guys are you looking for a woman? Wouldn’t it be smart to head to the Mondrian’s Red Bar after this event? I mean women fresh from this course will be eager to try all the new tricks and tips that they learned on men. If I was in the game, I’d do it.

THE BEST NEW LIVE SPORTS SHOW IN PHOENIX
‘Inside the Trenches’ launches with live studio audience Monday Nov. 2The Arizona Cardinals are steamrolling opponents, and nobody has the insider reports from the front linemen responsible for that success like Inside the Trenches, a new, live studio show that is now off and running.
The Live show is hosted by R-Kal Truluck (former Cardinal DE and 12-year football veteran) and Cedric Ceballos (former Phoenix Sun and 17-year NBA veteran). Inside the Trenches has delivered top gridiron guests and industry experts on BlogTalkRadio.com since last year -- week in, week out.
The show is live at Doc’s Place Music and Supper Club, 40 E. Camelback Road in Phoenix every Monday at 4-5:30 p.m. as a pre-game warm-up to the NFL’s televised Monday Night Football.
The fi rst guest on Inside the Trenches premiere show is none other than “Big Ben” Patrick, the Cardinal’s tight end who caught the fi rst touchdown pass wedged between two Steelers defenders during the 2008 Super Bowl.
The public is invited to be entertained by host R-Kal Truluck and co-host Ian Allen phoning in live from the East Coast. And as a special attraction, during and after each
show former NBA superstar Cedric Ceballos, formerly with the Phoenix Suns and L.A. Lakers, will spin his favorite tunes as Inside the Trenches house DJ each Monday.
Each week a live studio audience can relive the excitement of the week’s pro football games with pro players talking about the game they love, then settle in with a good drink and good meal to watch and root on the featured teams as they battle it out live on big-screen TVs. Hosts Truluck and Allen promise lots of entertainment and Cedric Ceballos’ DJ music following the show.
Football fans not present at the live show can call in and talk to the guest players, and be part of the live interviews. The national call-in phone number is (718) 506-1889.
In addition, football followers from across the country can join in on Internet radio by going to www.Insidethetrenches.com.

JEFF BECK – PERFORMING THIS WEEK…LIVE AT RONNIE SCOTT’S (EAGLE ROCK)
Always walking a fi ne line between rock, blues and jazz, virtuoso guitarist Jeff Beck is captured on his fi rst dvd ever in the intimate setting of Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club to perform predominantly his 70’s era material. Truly one of music’s most respected guitarists, Beck rolls through such trademarks as “Beck’s Bolero”, “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”, “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers” along with an instrumental version of The Beatles “A Day In The Life”. They are executed with such brilliance and feeling it’s no wonder why Beck is so well respected and consider by many to be a legend. His playing is enhanced (if that’s even possible) by the musicianship of Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Jason Rebello (keyboards) and Tal Wilkenfi eld (bass), or perhaps the other way around. Joining Beck for guest spots are Joss Stone who turns in an incredible version of “People Get Ready” and Eric Clapton on “Little Brown Bird” and “You Need Love”. With
21 tunes in all and interviews, this one is worth the admission price. If you’re not familiar enough with his playing other than the occasional guest spot, this is a perfect introduction to what music fans have known for years: his playing exudes class, feeling, melody, reckless abandon, masterful musicianship and sheer execution of the guitar that no one can match. Beautifully shot and with an excellent sound mix, would you expect anything less from Jeff Beck?

EMI, Hot Topic and ‘The Almost’ Create a New Retail ModelPre-Release of MONSTER MONSTER Full-Length Nov. 3 Tooth & Nail/Virgin Records (EMI) rock band The Almost have created a Monster. Monster Monster is the five-piece rock group’s sophomore album, the follow-up to 2007’s Southern Weather, which scored a #7 Modern Rock single in “Say This Sooner,” a slot on MTV’s prestigious Discover & Download program and a quarter-million in sales after debuting in the Top 40 on the Billboard Top 200 with 29k+. Formed by Underoath drummer Aaron Gillespie along with guitarists Jay Vilardi and Dusty Redmon, bassist Alex Aponte and newest member, drummer Joe Musten, The Almost’s ‘Monster Monster’ represents the culmination of two years of touring, with the resulting disc a melding of the group’s individual talents into a truly collaborative effort. Before the release,
The Almost will release a new video to fans, which will be followed by their lead anthemic rock single “Hands.” The album is slated for release on Nov. 3, but will be preceded by a Limited Edition special five-track EP entitled the Monster EP, featuring three album cuts and two B-sides. The EP is now available exclusively at Hot Topic stores, the band’s website, as well as on the band’s upcoming tour. The Monster EP will come in a special two-disc digi-pack, with a choice of five
different covers. In an unprecedented new model for music delivery, EMI and Hot Topic will offer this Limited Edition EP packaging, which includes one disc with the EP’s music and a second blank CD with Monster Monster’s full-length artwork, lyrics and printed track listing on the physical CD, but no music. Fans will be able to download every song through a special promotional code on the day of actual physical release, Nov. 3, from ShockHound.com the MP3, merch and editorial site ( http://www.ShockHound.com/ ), which is a
division of Hot Topic, Inc. During the tour, the band will make stops at select Hot Topic stores for exclusive in-store performances and signings. Nov 9 - Marquee Theatre - Tempe, AZwww.thealmost.com www.myspace.com/thealmost www.facebook.com/thealmost www.twitter.com/thealmost
