This semester, what is one thing that you havelearned about yourself that you did not knowbefore?

    FINISHING THE UNIT

    Part 7 The Reflection

What did your students learn? What did theynot learn? How do you know?

How did you use formative assessmentthroughout the unit and what did it tell you(specifically)? How did it help you adjust yourinstruction throughout the unit?

What would you change if you were to teachthis unit again? Why? (again, the importantthing here is to reference math and evidence)

  • 7/30/2019 AZ TE 801-E Week 10

    13/34

The final product of the unit

This is important for your professionaldevelopment (e.g., final professional portfolio)

Realize that reflecting on student work here isessential for your final unitthis is the onlyway to evaluate what students learned duringthe unit and to demonstrate what you werethinking about as you taught the lesson

  • 7/30/2019 AZ TE 801-E Week 10

    14/34

    Remember

It is bad teaching to say, I plan to do this, and I plan to do that.

Or to reflect and say, I did this and I did that. The KEY to good teaching is to incorporate

what students are thinking!!! (hence the analysis of student work and

    formative assessment is important)

  • 7/30/2019 AZ TE 801-E Week 10

    15/34

You will want to show that

    1) You can analyze student work 2) You can use the information that you gather

from this to modify your instruction inmeaningful ways

This is the name of the game. This is what you want to make sure that you

demonstrate in your final unit (for yourprofessional portfolio)

  • 7/30/2019 AZ TE 801-E Week 10

    16/34

Lets not lose sight of the math!

What I just said applies to all of your teaching(every content area)

But, of course, a principal will want to see thatyou can do this precisely and thoughtfullywithin each content area. The more you candemonstrate that you know about thecontent, the more impressive it is.

Be as precise, specific, and thoughtful aboutthe math as possible.

    In your grade-level groups

Look at your completed unit plans Share What were three of the most valuable

formative assessments that you had duringyour unit?

What did you learn from it? How did you useit to modify your instruction (e.g., otherassessments or your daily lesson plans)?

  • 7/30/2019 AZ TE 801-E Week 10

    19/34

    Reflecting on Lesson Plans

Looking over your daily lessons from the GLT, What would you have changed? Why? Be

specific (the more specific you can be aboutthe math, the better!)

    Classroom Discussions

What was the most productive classroomdiscussion you had during your GLT? What didyou learn about student thinking from it?

What was the most difficult or leastproductive or most frustrating classroomdiscussion you had during your GLT?

What is most difficult about facilitatingstudent-to-student interactions?

    What we want

What are the differences between these twographs?

One is bigger than the other. What do other people think?

    For Project 3

Remember, the Talk Moves are important forthis, and can help you prepare for how youmight lead a discussion (and weave studentresponses together (hence, more student-to-student talk rather than all teacher-student)).

  • 7/30/2019 AZ TE 801-E Week 10

    26/34

    For Project 3

    But also remember that the goal of thisproject and the goal for this course is NOT foryou to achieve perfection;

Rather, the goal is to help you developprofessionally; to start to think about how youmight begin to learn in and from your practice.

  • 7/30/2019 AZ TE 801-E Week 10

    27/34

    Project 3

So, the goal of this project is not Lead a perfect classroom discussion.

Rather, the goal is Lead a discussion and analyze it; i.e., Learn how to analyze your practice

That is, without question, the most importantthing that you can learn this semester or thisyear.

  • 7/30/2019 AZ TE 801-E Week 10

    28/34

    That is,

Learn how to analyze your practice Recognize that teaching is a practice that you

can work on and improve no one is a bornteacherpractice is something continually tolook at, evaluate, and it can be improved!

(I love this point; it is so miraculous)

  • 7/30/2019 AZ TE 801-E Week 10

    Planning / Analyzing your Discussion

How is this discussion tied into your goals / bigideas for that lesson?

How did the classroom discussion you had (ormight have) help you (or not help you) achievethese goals for this lesson?

Can you share in grade-level groups, and wewill hear some good examples.

Remember that this applies to allmath lessons! In each lesson, youwill have opportunities to advance

    student thinking through discussion.

  • 7/30/2019 AZ TE 801-E Week 10

Remember that these principles andtechniques applies to all subject

    areas!
