Assessment & Reporting Updateby Mr Kerry Flynn, Deputy Principal

When students returned to school they were given a revised assessment calendar for the remainder of the Term. Teachers have been busy

reorganising units of work and ensuring that the assessment piece that students are completing at the end of this term is both fair and reasonable, taking into account the disruption due to the pandemic. As a result of maximising the amount of learning time available this term, assessment will continue right through until the end of Week 10. Consequently, Report Cards will be finalised by staff at the beginning of next term. These will then be distributed to students and families at the beginning of Week 3, Term 3.

Keep a watch on our school these holidaysReport any suspicious activity at

our school to School Watch on 13 17 88.If you see something suspicious, please don’t intervene. Call the School Watch number and let the local police or State Government Protective Security Service deal with the matter.

This has definitely been a very different Term. Firstly, I would like

to say a huge thank you to the students and parents/carers of the Ayr High Family for their support and patience throughout the first five weeks of the Term. It was very different to how we deliver schooling normally, but it was outstanding to see how we came together as the Ayr High Family and worked our way through this tough time together.During that time, the message was to concentrate on the LEARNING. We have continued that since being back and now we are in the middle of assessing what learning has happened. Across all year levels we have made adjustments to the assessments to ensure no student is disadvantaged during this period of time. Next term, we will return and start fresh and hopefully if our state remains relatively Covid-19 free, we will have no interruptions to schooling. To ensure this, we still need to ensure that we are washing our hands, maintaining social distancing and not going to work or school if we are sick.Whilst there are still some restrictions in place, we are working to ensure school can remain as normal as possible for the back half of 2020. At this stage we are remaining optimistic and still planning for our major events. The Interhouse Athletics Carnival, New Zealand Tour and the Musical are all planned to go ahead in Term 3. As time comes closer we will be able to make more informed decisions about whether or not the restrictions will allow for these events to proceed.Next term is also very important for our Year 10 students who will be heavily

involved in the development of their Student Education and Training Plan or SET Plan. This plan focuses on asking students and families to think about and choose possible career pathways for each student. From there, we then look at subject selection for Years 11 and 12, ensuring that the subjects chosen align with the career pathways chosen. This is an important time for students and parents/carers to have conversations about student’s career goals, likes and dislikes and/or strengths and weaknesses linked to careers. This process will involve meetings between students, their parents/carers and the student’s QCE case managers. Having good discussions and being realistic about our ambitions are key to having success in Years 11 and 12.The crushing season has begun and once again Wilmar is asking everyone to use their “Train Brain”. That means it’s time for people of all ages to be alert, obey signs and signals at cane railway crossings, keep off cane bins and cane railway tracks, especially bridges, and always give way to cane trains. So let’s all ensure that we are looking for cane trains as we cross train lines and that we stay away from cane trains and cane bins. Finally, I wish everyone a happy and safe break. I am excited to get everyone back for Term 3 so we can all get back on track to achieve our Personal Best.Yours in education

2020 QUT High School Research Internship Program

by Sarah McDonnell, Year 12 Student

There aren’t many senior high school students who have the opportunity to personally interact with leading research scientists and discuss the latest,

groundbreaking STEM discoveries. However, being one of the 40 students selected for the 2020 QUT High School Research Internship Program, I am lucky enough to be one of those students. While the event (scheduled for April school holidays) was postponed due to the current global health crisis and related restrictions, the program coordinators refused to let us miss out on this incredible experience. They decided to host webinar sessions via Zoom with the scientific leaders facilitating each interest group. Participants were entitled to attend as many sessions as they wished and received insight into the latest research, trials and results for many STEM topics. I attended five biomedical orientated webinars and to say it was mind-blowing would be an understatement. I learnt about how cannabidiol treatments are assisting children with severe epilepsy, new approaches to combating emerging anti-microbial resistance, the relationship between certain genes and migraines, plus more. My favourite session, and ironically my delegated interest group, was “How cancer cells escape and survive therapy”. Hosted by Dr Jennifer Gunter, students were able to understand why developing a cure for cancer is so difficult, the genetics associated with certain cancers and what new advancements had been made, especially with prostate cancer. I was so honoured to be a part of this QUT experience which has reinforced my passion for biomedical science and research. Fingers crossed, I will be down at the Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre later in the year conducting experiments with the latest cancer treatments…the future is STEM.

New Zealand Tour 2020Information Update

Senior Case Management

Meetingsby Mr Kerry Flynn, Deputy Principal

Every term we ‘check-in’ with our Year 10, 11 and 12 students to see how

they are progressing on their learning journey. This Term, the disruption to our normal school routine due to the pandemic meant that we had to wait for students to return to conduct these sessions. It was also a very good way to reconnect with our students and help them transition back into schooling after [email protected] 10 Case Management - focus was on how they were tracking their QCE10 points and discussion around potential careers they were exploring in their Short Course in Career Education during Wellbeing lessons.Year 11 Case Management - focus was on how the first Term of Year 11 was going and revisiting subject progress and the effects of the pandemic on their banking of Unit 1 points for their QCE.Year 12 Case Management - focus was on how students were progressing with their subjects, the QCAA changes to assessment requirements in Applied/General subjects and the revised assessment schedule.

From the Guidance Officeby Mrs Sarah Matthews, Guidance Officer

Remember me? I am beyond excited to be coming back to the Ayr High Family as of Term 3. I have been off caring for my two boys but am ready to

jump back into it from Monday to Friday next Term. Seeing all the amazing things that have been happening despite Covid-19 has made me miss our amazing school. As always, Term 3 is set to be a busy one in the Guidance Office.Queensland Tertiary Application Centre (QTAC) applications will be due before we know it, so we will start the Term off with some information sessions. My plan is to present to Year 12 students in Week 2 and then there will be a Family Information Evening in Week 3 (Tuesday 28 July) presented by Mr Flynn and myself. I will have attended a QTAC refresher so hopefully I will be able to answer any questions you may have about the process this year. Following the presentations, I will offer meeting slots for students and parents/carers to discuss their application with me to ensure students are maximising their opportunity of receiving a place for 2021 or beyond. I will continue to provide support for students with significant issues affecting their learning. If you would like to make an appointment upon my return, please see the ladies in the office. Have a safe and happy holiday and I look forward to seeing you all on my return.

Agriculture: growing awareness at Ayr High

by Mrs Emily Shannon, Teacher

We are now in the fourth year of offering Agricultural Practices at Ayr High. This subject aims to develop our students’

understanding of farming practices, especially in the Burdekin area. Students study a range of topics, from what keeps plants healthy, to considering how farmers manage the costs of production while growing and marketing quality produce. The class also gets outside working on the school “farm”. Tasks include preparing ground for planting, making up their own seed-raising mixtures, planting, growing and harvesting their own crops. The first sweet corn for the year has just been harvested and has the same great quality as previous years. Tomatoes, beans and capsicums grown from seed in the shadehouse were planted out last week. This year we grew seedless watermelons for the first time and produced some high quality, delicious fruit. The melons were harvested at the start of this Term during our Covid-19 lockdown, so staff and students who were on campus enjoyed some healthy sweet treats! Ayr High was accepted into the 2020 Agribusiness Gateway Industry to Schools Program (AGISP) earlier this year. This is a program offered by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries that gives secondary students focused learning opportunities aimed at developing an

understanding of agriculture as an industry. The purpose is to raise awareness and encourage students to think about careers in agriculture.AGISP has just awarded Ayr High a substantial grant that will give us more opportunity to provide projects that enable students to link agriculture with STEM in the classroom, in Agricultural Practices and through other subjects across the curriculum.

From the Junior Secondary Deputyby Ms Anna D'Ilario, Deputy Principal

As Term 2 draws to a close, life at school is slowly - but surely -

returning to some sense of normalcy. It’s been great having the whole school community reunited once again. I’d like to personally thank parents and carers for the outstanding job they did during the Covid-19 lockdown. Despite the enormous learning curve that we were all faced with, our wonderful parent body took it in their stride, communicated with the school, kept their kids (and themselves!) sane, undertook the task of Learning@Home, and somehow managing completing responsibilities whilst some simultaneously worked from home. Our staff also demonstrated their commitment to the Ayr High Family by providing online materials, paper-based materials, and supervising the children of essential workers at school, with many doing extraordinary long hours communicating with students well beyond 3.00 pm. Then, once we

heard that students were returning to school, staff modified curriculum and assessment so that students were able to seamlessly continue to learn. Mr Whittred, Mr Flynn and I are really proud of how our school community came together during this difficult time - and that’s what the Ayr High Family is all about.Covid-19 has also presented some challenges with how we are able to show our school spirit and come together as a family. Despite the restrictions, our staff have continued to find innovative ways to bring our community together, such as virtual school assemblies. Although we may do things a little differently, our school spirit and identity are still well and truly alive. As students have returned to school, it has been great to see them meet our school expectations and routines. However, after so many weeks away, some students are still finding it

difficult being at school on time. It is really important that students are at school - and class - on time as being late disrupts the learning of not just the student who is late, but the learning of the rest of the class. As the cold weather settles in, students and parents/carers will be pleased to know that our latest order of uniform jumpers have arrived and are in stock. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, we have had to cancel many events, such as Year 5 and 6 Transition days and our Year 7 Alva Beach activity days. Rest assured that as restrictions are gradually eased, we will be working to see if we can re-schedule events. However, there is one event that is still on…the school musical! We are still forging ahead with the musical and keeping the dream alive! Rehearsals are well under way and we will be ready to rock the Burdekin in September! #Don’tStopBelieving

I Wanna Rock!! by Mr Tom Pickersgill, Assistant to the Director/Stage Manager

After a bumpy start to the year, Ayr High students are focusing in on the Term 3 musical. Rehearsals have started (pending Covid-19 restrictions) and although the work will be hard

and the rehearsals will be tough, the payoff will rock (‘n’ roll)! It’ll feel like paradise! So far we’ve seen students hit it with their best shot as they rock their way into the era of big egos, big bands and even bigger hair. The cast has been busy learning their lines, singing their notes and stepping out their dance routines and featuring songs from beloved rock bands of the 80s. Rock of Ages is sure to get pulses racing and the feet tapping.Audiences are in for a thrill as they are thrown into the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood where a developer threatens to end the rock ‘n’ roll dreams of so many. The city was built on rock ‘n’ roll and that’s how the characters want it to stay! In the meantime, don’t stop believing, we will be on stage next Term! So come on, feel the noise! We want more, more, more!!

Cooking Up A Storm!by Ms Anna D'Ilario, Teacher

Even though the lockdown meant that our Year 7 and 8 students have missed half of their Term 2 elective rotation, teachers are working hard to ensure students still get to experience their elective. There is no assessment for the

Term 2 electives as the focus is on giving students as much practical experience in the subject as possible. In 8 Design and Technology, 8D and I have been cooking up a storm! In double-quick time, we learned about work plans, kitchen health and safety practices, kitchen routines and - bam! We were cooking in no time. 8D have proven to be most adept at being in the kitchen and have prepped, cooked and cleaned like old hands (I know that may come as a surprise to some parents/carers!). Last week, they baked their bacon and vegetable slices and every student had their tray in the oven with 30 minutes to spare - a record! The smells emanating from the kitchen were heavenly and, judging by the number of students lined up outside the kitchen hoping to get a taste, the final product was delicious, too!

Tips for Parents/Carers of GamersHere are some tips parents/carers can use to help their gamers play a little more intelligently.1. Try to invest some time into their gaming, either as a cheerleader/fan or a player.

The benefits of being coached in their favourite game are very important. One reason is understanding the information on the screen, and another reason would be connecting with your child. The tone of the conversation changes when they see you as a teammate and not an opponent.

2. Try to promote quality over quantity. In this case, suggest that they prioritise real life friends rather than their online friends for the next little while. Don't worry, they'll know how to connect with friends from school online.

3. Try to take a couple of days off gaming per week where you spend a little more time as a family being productive or planning something that can be done when you're out. In this case, even if it's watching movies on another screen, it's a different activity.

4. Help them understand that overplaying will take them beyond the benefits they think they are going to get from playing. Expect more frustration, less concentration and ultimately less fun.

Check out the intelligent gaming guide here: www.gameaware.com.au/gamers.Limit gaming sessions based on these criteria:A three hour session is plenty and beyond that they will start to feel the effects of overplaying.Stick to three hours as a max, take a day or two off, and they will find themselves enjoying their gaming time a lot more than if they were to overindulge during this tough time.GameAware offers an online family weekend workshop you can find details here:http://www.gameaware.com.au/online-group-workshop/.
