New Portland Chapter Rep & Call for Portland Area Volunteers! First of all, please welcome Jennifer DiGiulio, the Portland-area Chapter Representative! She will participate in conference calls with the chapter board, as well as the items in the call below.

The PNW Chapter is still looking for additional Portland area representative(s) to assist with coordinating future events and gatherings around Oregon. We would also like to hear from Oregon members about events they would like to attend, or participate in, as well. If anyone would like to contribute more ideas, or would like to become more involved with AWG, please send an email to the PNW chapter at [email protected].

Wanapum Basalts, Central Washington near Park Lake along Grand Coulee: Spring 2013 AWG-PNW Field Trip;

Geologists for Scale

April 18 Tar Sands Lecture (Continued) The Oil Sands are a rich reserve of crude oil found in several locations inside Alberta. In the Northeast, the formation is just under the surface glacial materials. Pat Reed worked at several mines over a three-year period from 2009 to 2011. She will introduce the geology of the Oil Sands, and then discuss working and living in the unique environment of a mining camp.

Pat Reed, a past AWG-PNW president, is a professional consulting geologist with 25 years experience in engineering and environmental geology. She works for Terra Associates in Kirkland, Washington. In addition to her geoscience background, she has many interests including bronze casting and the research and teaching of early Scandinavian culture.

This event will be a casual, potluck event in the home of Mary Lynne Poole, one of our generous and dedicated members. The AWG-PNW Board will provide a main course and drinks and requests that participants bring an appetizer, side, or dessert to share. This event is open to AWG members, friends and supporters of AWG, and those interested in learning more about our organization.

There will be a collection of 30 years of AWG-PNW memorabilia on display. Please bring any photos of past chapter events that you may wish to share.

Saturday, April 18, 2015, 4pm to 8pm

Please RSVP to Elena Ramirez, AWG-PNW Treasurer ([email protected]) for directions by Friday, April 17, 2015.

Jenny  Saltonstall,  AWG  member  and  hydrogeologist  at  Associated  Earth  Sciences,  Inc.  gave  a  presentation  called  An  Overview  of  Puget  Lowland  Geology  and  Considerations  for  Stormwater  Management.    Jenny  discussed  soil  characteristics  associated  with  Puget  Sound  geology,  particularly  its  effects  on  infiltration  and  runoff.  Pizza  and  salad  were  served.  Mary  Lynne  Poole,  who  will  host  the  April  18  Pat  Reed  talk,  generously  held  the  event  at  her  home.

Joint Meeting with the Northwest Geology Society:

On  April  8,  2014,  AWG-‐PNW  held  a  joint  meeting  with  the  Northwest  Geology  Society  in  Seattle.    Jody  Bourgeois,  AWG  member  and  professor  at  the  UW  Earth  and  Space  Sciences  Department,  gave  a  talk  titled  “Travels  in  Geology  –  Antarctica  and  the  Scotia  Arc:    Tectonics,  Climate,  and  Life.”    Jody  not  only  discussed  the  geologic  and  tectonic  history  of  Antarctica,  but  presented  incredible  slides  of  icebergs,  many  species  of  penguins,  and  followed  the  travails  of  early  Antarctica  explorers.

Several  Portland  Activities:

Seattle Geoarchaeologist Researches >10,000-Year-Old Bear Creek Site AWG-PNW member, geoarchaeologist Brandy Rinck, has conducted geoarchaeological work on the Bear Creek site in western Washington. This site has been found to contain an assemblage of tools dating to at least 10,000 years old. Radiocarbon dates between 12,500 and 10,000 years ago came from burnt willow, poplar and pine found among the artifacts. The array of stone tools lay underneath a peat layer dated to 10,000 years ago. To read more about the site, read the Archaeology article at: http://www.archaeology.org/news/3104-150320-washington-projectile-points and/or the Western Digs article at: http://westerndigs.org/10000-year-old-stone-tool-site-discovered-in-suburban-seattle/.

Albany Geoscientist Develops Research Geology Lego Set Proposal

Circe Verba, an Albany, Oregon-based research geoscientist, is developing a research geology lego set to inspire young scientists, according to the OPB News Blog, March 10 post. It includes male and female geologists, and, of course, a dog, a science lab with an electron microscope, and a crystal cave for exploration. The set is currently garnering support on a Lego-owned submission site for new designs. Read about it on the OPB News Blog here: http://www.opb.org/news/blog/newsblog/albany-geologist-hopes-to-inspire-young-scientists-with-geology-lego-set/
