Axia ® office chairs: awareness of sitting durably developed smart technology
Axia® office chairs:
awareness of sittingdurably developedsmart technology
BMA has been dedicated to improving
your seating position for decades!
Moreover, it is our mission! This is
an ongoing process and we work
at it every day. BMA uses scientific
research to continuously improve your
seating position.
We make use of the latest technology,
but also listen carefully to our
customers and take their experiences
into account. And of course we also
utilise our own expertise and creativity.
From advice...The history of BMA can be traced back
to 1988. In that year a physiotherapist
and a mechanical engineering
technician founded the BioMechanisch
Adviesbureau (BMA). They combined
their knowledge to be able to advise
organisations about ergonomic work-
place solutions.
This way, our clients were able to
offer their employees a more suitable
work-place environment, resulting in
healthier and satisfied employees.
…to innovationThe fact is that there is not enough
good, ergonomic office furniture.
This was the conclusion BMA came
to in around 1996. The organisation
therefore decided to start developing
their own ergonomic chairs. BMA
developed the first Axia®, a unique,
ergonomic office chair specifically
designed for working behind a screen.
Users were able to adjust this seat to
their own body and seating position
in great detail. Because of the great
design of the back rest, sitting angle
and arm rests, people were now able
to sit in such a way that their back,
arms and neck could be relaxed in
any position.

BMA highly values durability, not just
during production, but also when it
comes to recycling their chairs. With
this in mind the different Axia® models
are 98% recyclable. Over the years
BMA has continued to improve their
products when it comes to durability.
The starting point is to maintain a
balance between the 3 Ps: People,
Planet, Profit.
In addition, BMA is also dedicated to
developing more efficient production
methods, with constant attention to
CO2 reduction.
Modular assemblyBMA‘s attention to the environmental
impact of each and every product part
begins with the design.
Partly for this reason, the Axia® chairs
are designed in a modular fashion.
When a chair has become worn
with age, the materials can easily
be separated and recycled in the
correct fashion.
An additional advantage of this is
that the different parts can easily be
replaced at any time.

“Are ergonomically designed chair
actually used in the correct manner?”
This question provided the basis for the
further internal development of BMA
to continue to improve users’ seating
position. To sit in a good chair the
wrong way is still a bad way to sit! The
user must therefore be made aware of
their own seating position. Technology
can help to find out whether a user is
sitting correctly. In this case “measuring
is knowing” also hold true.
Create awarenessMaking employees aware of their
seating position and what the
consequences of bad seating position
can be; this is BMA’s mission. Scientific
research at the TU Delft has clearly
demonstrated that providing feedback
on someone’s seating position has a
positive effect on their sitting behaviour.
This has been confirmed by studies on
the actual users of BMA products.
The meansBMA offers support to users to help
them improve their seating position by
giving instructions on how to sit and
by demonstrating how to correctly
adjust the chair. Another way in which
BMA offers support is by outfitting their
chairs with smart technology in the
form of sensors that monitor the seating
position, connected to a label that
informs the user whether they are sitting
correctly. BMA has also developed new
software that can analyse the sitting
data of users.
Smart technology
www.axiasmartchair.nl
The Axia® Smart Chair is the result
of years of development. The chair
combines the optimum back support
with durable and smart technology.
The Axia® Smart Chair monitors
the sitting behaviour of its user and
provides feedback. This opens up a
world of possibilities both for users as
for general managers.
...monitors the sitting behaviourSensors in the seat cushion register
the sitting behaviour and keep a record
of how often a chair is used. The chair
records, for instance, how often and
how long contact is made with the
back rest. Is the user moving enough
or is he/she sitting in one position
too long? The sensors record such
information. Using special software
these data can be read for each chair
and allows for specific advice on sitting
behaviour.
...makes the user awareIf a user is sitting incorrectly the
chair will make him/her aware of it.
A vibrating signal indicates when he/
she has been sitting in a bad position
for too long. The chair literally touches
you! And this feels great. Using a
colour-coded system on a label next
to the seat, the user can review his
sitting behaviour the past day, week or
month. The Axia® has been modularly
assembled, meaning that chairs sold
earlier can also be outfitted with this
smart cushion set.
