CONTEXT/1EU Sustainable Development committment

• Definition: To meet the needs of the present generation without

compromising those of future generation

• Persistance of unsustainable trends

• Main challenge: change

- consumption and production patterns

- non-integrated approaches to policy-making

Page 3: AWARE How to achieve sustainable water ecosystems management connecting research, people and policy makers in Europe Kick-off meeting Rome 4 – 5 June 2009.

CONTEXT/2Sustainable Development: from research to implementation

“Sustainable development cannot be imposed fromthe above. It will not take root unless people acrossthe country are actively engaged”

DEFRA (UK)

Page 4: AWARE How to achieve sustainable water ecosystems management connecting research, people and policy makers in Europe Kick-off meeting Rome 4 – 5 June 2009.

CONTEXT/3Sustainable Development: the challenge

Linked systems of people and nature, especially with the extent and interconnections of today’s populations, technologies and human activities, behave as complex adaptive systems.

The fundamental challenge is to change the way people think about the complex system upon which they depend, whereas the current lack of understandingand “blind” people behaviour contributes instead tounsustainable patterns of development

A further challenge is to raise awareness of the longview.

AWARE CONCEPT/1Sustainable Development: the way forward

We should build knowledge, incentives and learningcapabilities into institutions and organisations formanaging the capacity of local, regional and globalecosystems to sustain human well-being in the faceof complexity and change.

Adaptive co-management of natural resources andother societal “commons”, engaging people and newinterest groups in new and imaginative roles, is thekey response.

A number of successfull pilot projects …

RAISE - European Citizens Declaration on theSustainable City of Tomorrow

Key messages delivered by a group of 25 EU citizensrelated to EU 5° Framework research on urban topics:

- Urban governance- Sustainable built environment- Sustainable transport- Cultural heritage

Available at: www.raise-eu.org

A number of successfull pilot projects …

MOVE TOGETHER – Raising citizens awareness of EU research on sustainable urban transport

Citizens panels delivered “Move Together”declarations with key messages for the orientation and implementation of EU research on urban transport, at EU and local level

A “Better Mobility Exhibition” will travel now across Europe toshow the results and share the key messages of the citizenswith the large public

See: www.move-together-exhibition.net

… and the AWARE project

AWARE - How to achieve sustainable water ecosystems management connecting researchers, people and policy makers in Europe

Groups of citizens, scientists and policy makers will be engaged in participatory scenario building and assessment:

- In 3 coastal areas (Gulf of Riga, Po Estuary, France?)

- at EU level (International citizens panel and final conference)

AWARE impact and exploitation strategyMAINSTREAMING !

It is important to create the possibility for partnershipsconnecting scientists, policy makers and citizens:

- within the EU water and marine policy frameworks

- in relation to adaptive management tasks, at global, regional and local level

- with the contribution of EU, national and local institutions (i.e. providing budget for citizens participation in research and implementation projects)
