The term “business as usual” is not a term we have heard in the last few weeks. As everyone has been experiencing trying times, these are the times when communities come together. As your General Manager I would like to thank each and every member of Avila Golf and Country Club for the support you have been giving to the Club and our Staff. The Avila Community seems stronger than ever and it has been a pleasure serving your families more now than ever before. I want to thank our staff for their relentless efforts to serve each and every day while being extremely cautious and careful regarding the steps necessary to make Avila, the safest place to be!Although we are still in social gathering restrictions, we have decided to offer Easter Take-Out meals which is similar to what we provide for Thanksgiving. Please get your orders in as we would love to provide your Easter Celebration in the confines of your own homes. On a bright note, I am very excited to announce we will be building a New Golf and Teaching Facility which will break ground in the upcoming months. The Golf Teaching Center will be located on the southwest corner of the driving range. The 3000 square foot teaching center will consist of two hitting bays, one for professional instruction and the other will be available for member use. The hitting bays will have retractable doors so you can practice even when the weather does not cooperate. The facility will be equipped with an indoor putting green, a club fitting area as well as club repair and restrooms. The hitting bays will both have state of the art video equipment including the trackman ball flight monitors which provides all ball flight and club data measurements as well as a virtual simulator that produces 3d images to use as a simulator to practice or play the most popular golf courses in the world. This will be available for member reservations and will be equipped with a beverage area and the ability to order food while you are practicing or playing your favorite course (second favorite course next to Avila).Glenn Zito General Manager

TENNIS TIP – WHEN TO POACHIn doubles, most of us only volley when the ball comes to us. At the net you should be looking to poach more often. Whenever your opponent is struggling to hit a ball crosscourt back to your partner, look for chances to poach and end the point. You opponent may struggle when: a) your partner hits a fast ball; b) your partner hits a deep shot; or c) your partner hits an angle. These are three examples of when you should be aware of possible chances for poaching. Wait until your opponent starts to swing and you should start to move toward the ball.

FROM THE PRO
As we wrap up another season and head into the summer months, it doesn’t mean your golfing days are over! Playing early or late allows you to avoid the heat of the day. The longer days offer time to play nine holes after work. Keep your game in top condition through the summer and you will be tournament tough come the cooler days in the fall.
We continue to monitor the golf course to make certain it is treated fairly. We appreciate those who have paid attention to ball marks, divots, and bunker raking. In order to keep the golf course in top condition, all golfers must do their part.
Don’t forget that the Pro Shop can handle all of your corporate merchandise needs at better prices than you may think. Stop by my office for a quote on merchandise and I’m confident you won’t be disappointed!

TURF TALK
Our 3-week closure for course maintenance will begin June 2 and the course will reopen on June 24. During the closure, we will dryject, aerify, and graden all greens. Once the greens are completed, we’ll continue to the fairways, tees, and approaches. This will be our most intense aerification of the year. We’ll also be addressing some problem areas throughout the course. I’m finalizing our project list to maximize productivity during these three weeks and will discuss this in length in our next newsletter.
Following the heavy aerification in June, we’ll have additional aerification dates. On Monday, August 3rd, we will aerify the greens with small tines. Following Labor Day, we will combine our dryject and our last aerification on September 8-10. This will close out our cultural practices for the summer. Please remember that Mother Nature can affect these aerification dates and we’ll will keep you up-to-date with any delays.
As always, I look forward to seeing you on the course and if you have any questions please email me at [email protected].
Mike SlackGolf Course Superintendent
COACH’S CORNER
Many of you are making improvements because you have a game-plan and are practicing effectively. For some the plan is to make swing position changes, for others our focus is on your short game. We are also seeing several members improve because of their fitness plan. Your physical limitations can and will impact what you can and can’t do with your golf swing. Below are some common physical limitations and their resulting effects:
Poor shoulder flexibility = Arms collapse & reduce width in swing = Slower speed and loss of distance
Poor ab strength & rotational flexibility = Lateral slide & loss of posture = Slicing & lack of solid contact
Poor gluteal strength = poor lower body stability = Slower speed and loss of distance
Avila’s Fitness Center has several trainers who can help you. I know from personal experience that they do a fantastic job!
Scott WickhamDirector of Instruction
FANTASTIC FEATSGeorge Brant made a Hole-in-One in the Blue Tee Game and collected from all blue tee players. It was a good one and I neglected to recognize his feat in the last newsletter. He hit a heck of a shot on Hole #14 from 195 yards and it never left the flag. Belated congratulations!
Ryan Borruso and Phil Buell were asked if they were going to turn from #9 to #10. They replied, "Yes" because Ryan was 3 under par and going low. He then fired 65 without a bogey. Coincidentally, it was St. Patrick's Day and he had the luck of the Irish on his side! Great round from the Blue Tees.
Talk about perseverance, this is one of my favorite Fantastic Feats ever! Masood Khan was playing in his normal game with Dan Behuniak, Dan Kulik, and Jim Pappas. On hole #5, Masood hit 3 consecutive balls into the water. In a desperate act to keep the hole alive, he reteed a 4th time and jarred it for a natural 7! His crew got him a plaque with an asterisk to commemorate this great event!
