The forceof persistence:the sea right
under our skinJoao Maria AndreUniversity Lecturer
Fourcountries come together to express their own identity,in objectsthat arise fromthefruitfulness ofthe memory through the creativecapacity ofdesigners and craftspeople.However, ifasking about identity means asking that something orsomeone bedefinedin historical and cultural terms, trying to materialise the Atlantic identity offourpeoples that border the same ocean through artseems an impossible task, a challengethat has no anchor, quay or destination.
Butthis is only untilyou discover that identity is not static or monolithic; itisdynamic and plural, composite and of mixedorigin.Withtime itis formedand transformed into the threads, the knots, and ties inwhichencounters anddivergences, affections and silences, paths and projects are woven. Wearewhat wetouch and what touches us. And we are the marks, what remainswith usof this touch and contact with others, withthe world and, why not,withthe sea aswell. With its force in allits metamorphoses.Andwhile Irelandisinebriatedby t he f o rc e o f t h e l yr ic ,while France is attractedby t h e f o rc e o f s e d u c ti o n, while Spain is involved and iscreated in t he f o rc e o fmovemen t , we,in this corner of Europe, mould and are moulded, sculpt andare sculpted and letourselves besculpted by t h e f o rc e o f p e r s is t en c e that thesea, ina union ofwind,water, sun and sand, teaches uson the paths ofthepast and the clearings ofthe future.
I t is the force of persistence that with sweat carves the lines oftime deepinto skin hardened bythe salt ofthe sea air. Itis the force ofpersistence thatinvents lacylimestone patterns on the stones adorned with seaweed and lostshells. Itisthe force ofpersistence that slowlytears the threads ofits secretsonthe erosion ofthe rocks and inthe whelks gives us soothing music andthe comfort oflight.And itis also the forceof persistence that multiplies thefoam on the water and on the sand inan affirmation ofthe ephemeral thatwanders through the banks of life.

Stating our Atlanticidentity,which is permanently changing and weaving permanently,materials that wetouch and are moulded to our touch likeclay, porcelain orwood,to our breath and to our breathing likeglass, to our touch likecloth orpaper, tothesolidity and brill iance ofwhat dazzles us likesteel or iron, isto say it in its erosion,in itsfiligree work, in its compositions, in itspasted and overlaid fragmentations infractures and oscillatingvariations of incomplete symmetries, inthe traces that remainafter the wave has gone, after the sun has gone, after the wind has gone.
Stating our Atlantic identity, composite and of mixed origin, isto tell itin adialogue ofcolours, ofyellowand ochre, ofwhite and blue, of blackand green,ofpink and brown, andof allthe other colours inalltheir varieties. ButstatingourAtlanticidentitythrough the forceof persistence indialogue withthose whohave been partnersin ouradventure, ofthisadventure andof allother adventureswhichwe are told ofin myths, legends and stories, isalsoto allowthe forceofpersistence to becontaminated through the force ofthe lyric,to charm throughthe force ofseduction and to get across through the force of movement.Wearewhat wetouch andwhat touches us. OurAtlanticidentity inthe forceo fper si st ence i sa s s imple and as complex as the ocean inwhich wea reborn, whichawakes us, whichtore us asunder as wetore itasunder to inventthe future and inwhich one day wewillcome to rest. With aview to strengthening this interaction, CEARTEhasdeveloped the Avantcraf tP ro ject , whi ch i s i nvol ved in t he innovat ion and t rends o f t he cra ft marke t, and i ssupported bythe INTERREG Programme.
A l ia n tC r af t - Y o un g d e si gn e rs , n e w f o r ms , n e w w a y s, n e w t im e s f o r t he A t la n ti cCulture, which is a project supported bythe Interreg 111-8(priority D - Culture,Heritage and Tourism), has been developed over two-and-a-hal fyears andhas been achieved through ini tiat ives in four dif ferent countries: Portugal,I reland, Franceand Spain. Ineach ofthese countries, an insti tute has beenworking asa partner - in Portugal, CEARTE-Centro de Formacao Profissionaldo Artesanato, in Ireland,the Crafts Council oflreland, in France,theAssociationPole Regional des Metiers d'Art and in Spain the Centro deArtesanfa y DiseFiode Lugo (Project Coordinator).

Through this project , which is based on the innovat ion of the craftsperson//designer partnership, on internationalisation and on market trends, CEARTEseeks to contr ibute towards the necessary quali fied innovat ion, in a largepart of craft production. Using appropriate technologies, the aim isto producetop quali ty art icles with high added value,wi th a strong image for the nat ionaland international market.

AimsTopromote the image o f the ident ity o fan Atlantic Space, through the design,development and promotion ofvarious collections of products inspired bytheAtlantic heritage, culture and landscape.To improve the competitiveness of small craft companies, through partnershipsbetween craftspeople and designers, trend analysis, incorporation of newtechnologies,lnter-regional productive cooperation and joint promotion.Tocreate a cooperation network between centres that promote design and craftsinthe participating countries, forthe development ofjoint activities involving design,cultural creation and promotion of micro companies.InitiativesThefirst stage ofthe project, in2005, consisted oHorming ateam Of16 craftspeopleand designers who, byparticipating in6 weekend workshops, gained specifictechnicalskills atthe level ofcraft markets . Atthe same time, a team of4 resident CEARTEdesigners worked on developing the whole identity concept ofthe Atlantic Space.This was based on research ofelements ofa patrimonial and artis tic nature andsymbolic ofPortugal, with afocus on the sea, resulting ina strong finalconcept. Thisstage ended with a briefing on howto develop product collections.
The second stage ran throughout 2006, when 7 more craftspeople, 7 designersand 3 companies joined the ini ti al g roup . Thi s was based on the image o f theAtlantic identity and inspired inthe concept of Force -the Force of Persistence .Start ing with traditional technologies, integrating Innovation and Design, theydesigned and developed product collections aimed at a specific clienttype.The thi rd and f inal s tage o f thi s p ro ject was reserved for 2007 and consi st ed o fdeveloping exhibitions to promote the Atlantic identity and the concept of Force ofPersistence. Italso involved organising allthe questions of production and marketingofthese new products, with new design and better quality,with a strong local identitybetter adapted to present global trends, on the part ofthe craftspeople and smallcompanies, in partnership with designers.

TheAvantcraft collection aims to promote and market the Atlantic Identity,which issomething common to all the project partners. This isdone bydeveloping various collections of products inspired bythe Atlanticheritage,culture and landscape.The Atlantic Ocean, as an element that iscommon tothe four countries,differs from other seas inits unique properties. TheAtlantic isan Oceanthat isgrey,violent, tempestuous and strong ...Force is the start ing point for the concept developed byeach country,and each has a specific way ofexpressing and identifying itself with theforce element. Itis this difference between cultures that brings us closerand makes us convey these same feelings insuch different ways.Portugal has always had a verystrong bond with the sea. TheAtlantic hasbeen the rou te used to g ive new wor ld s to the wor ld , i twas a p lace o fgreat feats , where, as a people, we have perpetuated tenacity, culture,our way of being, persistence. He likessimple, modern products, but with some aesthetically appealing details.
