Performance Objective: Given a VEX Robotics Challenge, compete on a competitive VEX team, successfully demonstrating appropriate team member skills.

Successful Teams

A successful team should have the following attributes:

A common goal Leadership Each team member makes unique contributions Effective team communication Creative spark Harmonious team relationships Effective planning


A Common Goal

The goal of the team is to win a VEX Regional Competition

Every team member should be dedicated to this goal


Leadership

The team will be appointed a team leader by the instructors

Every team should contribute to the leadership of the team


Each Team Member Makes Unique Contributions

Every team member has unique skills These skills should be utilized by the

team leadership Do not be afraid to speak up and tell the

leader your skills


Effective Team Communication

The team should have open discussions to discuss ideas

There are no dumb ideas Do not be afraid to suggest an idea Others can be inspired by your idea


Creative Spark

Team members should bring excitement to the group

Team members should have a “can do” attitude

Team members can inspire and energize other team members


Harmonious Team Relationships

Be respectful Be encouraging Be positive Conflicts will arise, work through them

as a team Work should be productive and fun


Effective Planning

Work should be appropriately distributed among team members

Resources should be used appropriately

Attends all team meetings Arrives on time or early Communicate in advance if un able to

Act as an energy source, not as a downer Bring excitement to the team Have a “can do” attitude towards the

Growth Stages of a Team

Every team will go through the following stages

Forming Storming Norming Performing Adjourning


Forming

During this stage teammates get to know one another

Team members learn the attributes the other team members possess

Team members may be shy and reserved


Storming

This is a tough stage Team members may get upset with each

other You may ask, why do I have to work with

this person? Stay focused during this stage Be positive and encouraging to get through

this stage of team development


Norming

The team begins to work better with one another

Teams begin to believe they can reach their goal

Teams begin to utilize the strengths of individual members

Team bonding occurs


Performing

Teams begin to pull together and work hard

The team is positive about reaching the final goal, while having fun

Team members accept responsibility and work through tasks together

There is a sense of team pride


Adjourning

Teams adjourn when the goal has been accomplished

When teams finish successfully, there is a sense of pride and accomplishment

If the team was unsuccessful, there may be feelings of anger and disappointment
