Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Thank you for your hospi-tality during my official visits. I have enjoyed being with you and look forward to seeing everyone in the near future.

Although the Department of New York did not make its quota from National, we are on

our way toward reaching our new goal of 360 new and reinstated members by January 31. I know we can do this under the leadership of Chairman Dolores Sheeley. Let’s get behind her and fulfill our pledge to “Just add One” new member.

The CAFÉ event in Yorktown, Virginia was awesome. The Auxiliary marched in the parade as guests of the Historical Society who accompanied our military in uniform. Members of the Histor-ical Society wore Revolutionary War Period attire. I toured a working farm of the times and attended National President Dee’s homecoming testimonial.

Then it was off to Portland, Maine for the Eastern States Conference. We met the candid-ates for National Guard. Along with supporting thespians, Debbie Casella, Mary Makosky, Nina LeFrois and Terry Sullivan the Department of New York fulfilled our assignment demonstrating how to publicize the Family Freedom Event.

Commander in Chief Keith Harmon requested that every one of us write a letter to our Senators and Representatives to end sequestration. Nothing makes an impression more than having an office full of envelopes that need to be opened and read. Send a batch in one envelope then send individual ones during the week on different days to keep the momentum going.

President Dee Guillory said that we must continue to communicate Mental Health Aware-ness within our cities and towns and to be aware of the 5 signs of Metal Depression. She stressed that this is not a fundraising campaign. A check is not as effective as sharing knowledge and information stressing good mental health and where to find help and referrals to the Veterans’ Crisis Line.

Dear Members, After an unexpected yet unavoidable delay, Department dues notices were mailed on October 30th for those Auxiliaries that contributed to Department Postage on the Donation Report Form. Thank you to the Line Officers and members who stepped up to help me get the mailing accomplished this year. It turned out to be quite a lengthy process and I truly appreciate all who helped! I hope our Auxiliaries have started to see positive results of the dues mailing. Avoid the $1.50 increase in per capita dues – by paying before December 31st! Effective January 1, 2018 dues increase by $1.50 for per capita dues for a total of $12.00.

Annual members who have not paid and/or processed their dues as of December 31st will no longer be members in good standing. This is especially import-ant for officers. Per Section 104 of Auxiliary bylaws, Officer dues MUST be paid prior to December 31st. There are currently over 40 unpaid officers in our Department. Give this matter special priority to collect and record their dues immediately.

I am happy to report the our Auxiliary Treasurers are doing very well with MALTA and are processing a good percentage of dues and memberships on their own. The Department Treasurer [Kim White] must receive a copy of all new or rejoined member applications to keep our files complete. Copies may be scanned and emailed or USPS mailed.

I have received several inquiries about the process to remove a member who has joined the Auxiliary but does not meet all of the eligibility requirements. Be sure to carefully read and reference the current Bylaws Sec. 108 ––Removing Ineligibles. •An Auxiliary may by motion duly passed at any regular or special meeting called for such purpose, question the eligibility of any member. (Note: questions about eligibility of a member begin with a motion duly passed at any regular or special meeting called for such purpose within an Auxiliary. Niece/nephew joining under aunt/uncle is NOT eligible. See page 12 of this newsletter!)

I am enjoying working with all of you. I can be reached by telephone after 5:00 PM weekdays and most weekends. I am here to assist you in any way that I can.

As we embark on this holiday season, remember … “Our Veterans’ Love is More Precious than Gold” as we … “Catch the Dream for Our Veterans.”

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. May your holidays be filled with friends, family and … just the right gift!

Dear Members, ‘Tis the season to be busy! I hope you will all have an opportunity to reflect on our blessings and give thanks. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa remember to pray for our active duty military; especially those who will not be home for the holidays. Also, remember their families who will have an empty chair at holiday dinners and gatherings.

“Freedom is not free but it is worth fighting for.”

I hope you attended a Veterans Day service. Members of the Benjamin Prescott Chapter Daughters of American Revolution paid tribute to Veterans residing at an assisted living facility in Fredonia. I explained the significance of the Missing Man Table as many of the guests had never seen the ceremony before. Each guest received a Buddy Poppy and American Flag. The reading of the poem “Just a Common Soldier” by A. Lawrence Vaincourt, resulted in many tears. It was an honor to recognize our veterans, not only as a VFW Auxiliary member, but also as a DAR member.

Section 104 of the VFW Auxiliary Bylaws states a Member in Good Standing has current year dues paid. That means annual members must pay their dues by December 31, 2017 to remain in good standing! A member who is NOT in good standing cannot attend VFW Auxiliary meetings; cannot hold any elective or appointive office or chairmanship; and cannot apply for a Cancer Grant until their dues are paid. A listing of unpaid officers was recently sent to all District and County Council Presidents. As of this writing, 40 officers still do not have their dues paid. Officers must have their dues paid and processed by December 31, 2017 or their Auxiliary may face suspen-sion from National. In addition, all officer dues must be current in order for President Denise to be eligible to be inducted into the Circle of Excellence. Your Auxiliary may want to consider paying Officer dues forward for their Officers!

Effective January 1, 2018 Department of New York Dues will increase by $1.50 to $7.00; for a total of $12.00 for each annual member. Now may be a good time to review the amount of your Auxiliary dues to ensure the amount covers the expenses. An increase in dues must be voted on and approved by membership.

Trustees are elected not appointed committee members. Refer to the Booklet of Instructions, Secretary Minutes. Trustees read the audit report as the last order of New Business, immediately preceding Suggestions for the Good of the Order. The Trustees report (audit) must be voted on and accepted by members present.

To ensure the integrity of our organization, Membership and Investigating Committees must pay close attention to eligibility of new member applications. Refer to the back page for a listing of eligible relatives. Merchant Marine service or niece/nephew joining under aunt/uncle does NOT meet eligibility requirements.

I hope you and your family celebrate your own faith and observe family traditions. Always remember … “Our Veterans’ Love is More Precious than Gold” and we can … “Catch the Dream for Our Veterans.” From my home to yours, to one and all, Ray and I extend our wishes for a Blessed and Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. Loyally, Debbie

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” ~ Winston Churchill

The DREAM TEAM is working very hard to achieve and to show that … “Our Veterans’ Love is More Precious than Gold.”

Some of these plans include: Recruiting New Members, Retaining Current Members and Rejoining Previous Members.

Recruiting 360 New Members by January 31, 2018 to reach our second quarter goal should be a piece of cake. After all! We Recruited 469 New Members in our first three months!

Now that MALTA is up and running I urge ALL to log in and become familiar with the software program. I have been helping several Treasurers navigate the site. Once they realize how easy and quickly they can pay their Member Dues using MALTA they wonder why they had not tried it sooner.

The 75%, 85% and 95% Awards have been distributed at various District Meetings. Will your Auxiliary have bragging rights? Will your Auxiliary be earning the 100% Banner? Or – better yet – will your Auxiliary be earning the Golden Grand Slam Award to be given out at Spring Conference? There are several Auxiliaries that have already reached 100% and 100% PLUS.

Please encourage all of the members who qualify in your Auxiliaries to send in the form for their “Catch Five” pin. Once our members qualify for the “Catch Five” pin, they can work toward the National Membership Achievement Award of twenty (20) new members.

It is very important to Retain our Current Members. In order for annual members to remain “In Good Standing” their dues must be processed by December 31, 2017. Encourage all members to pay their dues! The first dues renewal notices were mailed by Department Treasurer Kim White for those Auxiliaries that contributed to the Department Postage line item on the Donation Report Form.

Please do your BEST to encourage all of your Annual Members to pay their dues. As you may already know – Department dues will increase on January 1, 2018. Your Auxiliary can save $1.50 per annual member if dues are processed and paid before December 31, 2017.

Have you contacted a previous member to Rejoin us? Was that member overlooked? Was there a problem that we did not know about? Maybe that member just wanted to feel needed. Remember …

Our Ultimate Goal is Membership at 100% PLUS ONE to keep President Denise in the Circle of Excellence!

DEPARTMENT MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP GROWTH FOR SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER 2017

DISTRICT STANDINGS AS OF OCTOBER 31, 2017 District # 1 – 69.25% District # 2 – 85.09% District # 3 – 67.89% District # 4 – 70.53% District # 5 – 73.71% District # 6 – 71.83% District # 7 – 74.06% District # 8 – 70.11%

Since this is the Season of Giving may I suggest you consider gifting an Annual or Life Membership to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America Auxiliary? What better way to honor your VETERAN – your HERO – in your life or someone else’s life? Your Membership Gift will help keep our Organization strong.

Our Veterans are depending on our strength in numbers. They need to keep the benefits they earned and justly deserve. We need to continue supporting our Veterans. We need to make sure and legislative changes benefit all Veterans.

May you be Blessed with a Happy Holiday Season and a Happy Healthy New Year!

THE DREAM TEAM OF NEW YORK is ready to …

Dear Members, Can you believe it that the calendar year is almost over? We have to be the voice for our veterans on the many issues that our veterans need help with. Make sure you Take Action and sign up every matter helps in helping our veterans. The VFW Action Corps Weekly is an easy-to-read electronic newsletter that highlights the VFW’s advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill.

The VFW Action Corps is what gives the VFW its strength in advocating for our nation’s heroes. Working hand-in-hand with the VFW’s National Legislative Service – whose office is within eye-shot of the Capitol dome in Washington – members of the VFW Action Corps are armed with all of the tools and information they need to help the VFW in its mission to support our nation’s veterans.

These are some of the wonderful things we are working to achieve to help our veterans:

Priority Goals Brochure ~ TRICARE Increases Veterans’ Health Care ~ Toxic Exposures

VA Caregiver Program ~ Veterans’ Preference Sequestration ~ Concurrent Receipt

A Framework for Veterans Health Care Reform Evaluating VA Health Care Reform for Women Veterans

The Priority Goals reflect the resolutions passed by the VFW to strengthen and ensure an adequate VA system for millions of current and future veterans. They call for much-needed attention to crises and are grouped under eight areas of concern:

Budget Work Force Development and Accountability

Health Care Compensation and Benefits Education, Employment and

Transition Assistance Defense/Homeland Security

Military Quality of Life POW/MIA

Please send your reports by the first of each month! For every report, you will be entered into a drawing to win an afghan at the Spring Confer- ence. Every report counts for one ticket, i.e. send ten reports – you get ten tickets.

Have you hugged your Veteran today? Show that … “Our Veterans’ Love is More Precious than Gold” as we … “Catch the Dream for Our Veterans.”

Dear Members, Thank You all for the many cards I received after my

surgery. Your kind thoughts and prayers is deeply appreciated. Loyally, Art Scheuneman

Woodward Parkway

Elementary School Art Teacher, Erica Weisfelner, was inspired by President George W. Bush’s Portraits of Courage collection of paintings and essays about U.S. Veterans, and used the book as a teaching tool. She thought it would be a great idea to have her students paint portraits of veterans, interview them, and create a biographical essay book of portraits.

With the assistance of Corporal George Benkert, Jr. VFW Post No. 516 and its Auxiliary, 22 local veterans shared their story and had their portrait

painted by students of Mrs. Weisfelner. The portraits were displayed at the school art show which was attended by community members, and the local media, television, and newspaper.

This project had a profound impact on students, faculty, and the school community. Students expressed their new-found gratitude and respect in their essays using works like bravery, pride, sacrifice, honor and tradition. This project especially focused on the values of Americanism that were discussed during the very poignant interviews with the veterans. Visit: rhimagazine.com/2017/05/19 for more!

Charles N. DeGlopper Aux. to Post No. 9249 (Erie CC, D 6) purchased backpacks and filled them with assorted school supplies. President David Tolejko and Treasurer Kathy Blake delivered the backpacks to the “Response to Love Center” in Buffalo. While touring the facility with Sister Janice Buddy Poppies were distributed to the staff.

THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS A PERFECT TIME

TO PURCHASE A RAFFLE TICKET AS A GIFT!

THE FAMILY VACATION RAFFLE IS FRONT AND

CENTER!

Dear Sisters and Brothers, The Push is on! This year the Department is offering a great vacation opportunity just for you and your family. The HILTON GRAND VACATION CLUB TUSCANY FAMILY VACATION RAFFLE IS FRONT AND CENTER FOR THE NEW YEAR. This luxurious resort is located right in the heart of beautiful Orlando, Florida. The winner will receive a one-week stay for a family of four and airfare is included! The tickets for this raffle are only $5.00 each or three (3) for $10.00. The Hilton is located near all of Orlando’s best resorts. (Please note: there is no cash value to this vacation.) You not only get a chance to win this vacation of a lifetime but you are supporting the Department of New York and our Veterans.

Susan Darveaux was the lucky November winner! Her Auxiliary was the seller (Frontiersman No. 7545, Erie CC, D 6). There is still time to buy 9-month raffle tickets. We have reached 90% of our projected goal for this raffle. There are still a few Auxiliaries that have not yet sent in their donation or ticket stubs. Please send them as soon as you can. We want you to be included in all the monthly drawings! Each month the winner receives $100.00 and $20.00 to the seller. At our Department Convention in June the winning prize will double to $200.00 and $20.00 goes to the seller. There are still plenty of prizes left. So get those ticket stubs mailed to me asap. For those who have not returned their unsold 9-month raffle tickets, perhaps you can sell them to friends or at your post functions this coming holiday season.

The Ways and Means Program helps to offset the administrative costs for the Department of New York as well as projects for our Veterans and their Families. Together, as team New York, we can reach 100% in our raffles. The more Auxiliaries and members we have participating in this program means the Department of New York can do more for our Veterans and their families. Please help! We can show our veterans how much the Department of New York really cares this holiday season.

And … remember to show your appreciation by sending a donation after receiving items from the VFW Guaranteed Program. These donations really help to support the VFW Auxiliary Department of New York.

Let us all get back to basics in this new year. Let us all remember why we do the things we do for our Veterans. Each one of us has her or his own (special) reason for being in this Great Organization. This holiday season remember our Veterans and their families who are homebound.

Can we … “Catch the Dream for Our Veterans?” Yes we can! We can find a way this month and all through the new year to show that … “Our Veterans’ Love is More Precious than Gold.”

Loyally, Gene

Dear District Presidents, We have less than one month to complete inspections if we are to meet our December 18th goal. You and your inspectors have been doing a great job and I do appreciate it. However, there are a few Districts that I have not heard from. Please DO NOT wait until all of your District inspections are completed before sending them to me.

Each month I have to send a report to our Program Coordinator Irene Rohde. It makes my job easier if District Presidents send the reports to me shortly after each Auxiliary is inspected.

I have received a few phone calls from Auxiliary Presidents who asked why their Auxiliary is not showing as having been inspected.

Remember that December 18th is when all Auxiliary and County Council inspections should be completed.

Thank you all for the work you do to support our veterans, their families and your communities. You … “Catch the Dream for Our Veterans” and show … “Our Veterans’ Love is More Precious than Gold.” Loyally, Bonnie, PDP

CANCER GRANT FUND ~ Flora Becker, Chairman 86 Garden Street ~ Seneca Falls, NY 13148

Telephone: (315) 568-9066 ~ Email: [email protected]

Dear VFW Auxiliary Members, First, Gene and I would like to thank you for all the cards, donations, prayers, and thoughtful words of kindness after the passing of my mother, Rose Travis. My mother was my everything. Your support brought me strength through this difficult time. She was unaware that she had stage 4 stomach

cancer until the very end. My mother loved everyone in the VFW and Auxiliary. She was a great help to the organization. Thank you once again and is much appreciated more than you’ll ever know.

December is Aids Awareness Month (red). January includes: Cervical Cancer Screening (teal/white); National Birth Defects Awareness (teal), Thyroid Disease Awareness (teal, pink, blue); National Glaucoma (green); and Blood Donor month (green). January 4-10 is National Folic Acid awareness week; 17-23 is Healthy Weight week; 24-30 National Certified Nurse Anesthetists Week; 21-27 National Non-smoking week; and the 30th Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Day.

Cervical Cancer is the third most common type of cancer in women worldwide. Cervical cancer is 100% treatable. It starts as a pre-cancerous condition called dysphasia and can be detected by a Papanicolaou test. Each year 12,000 U.S. women are diagnosed with cervical cancer. It can take years for pre-cancerous changes to develop into cervical cancer. Most who are diagnosed have not had regular pap smears or have not followed up on abnormal results. Early cervical cancer generally has no signs or symptoms but may include:

pelvic pain; pain during intercourse; bloody vaginal discharge that may be heavy and have a foul odor; and/or bleeding after intercourse, between periods, or after menopause.

It is important for pre-teens, girls and boys, to get the human papillomavirus vaccine. Most cervical cancers are caused by HPV. A woman who engages in risky sexual habits increases her chance to get cervical cancer.

Men and women can take important steps to stay healthy including getting a wellness exam each year. Many insurance plans cover part or all of the cost of wellness visits. Cancer can appear without any symptoms until it’s too late. Be aware of any changes or something that does not seem normal and make an appointment with your doctor.

Please continue to send in your cancer grant ticket donations and donations for luminaries as we light the path in the fight against cancer. #MyHealthPromise

From my home to yours, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May you have safe travels and enjoy spending time with family and friends. Remember our Veterans by thanking them and sharing the holiday with them that might not have any family. Show how committed we are as we … “Catch the Dream for Our Veterans” while showing … “Our Veterans’ Love is More Precious than Gold.” Happy New Year! Loyally, Flora

Dear Auxiliary Members,

Thank You for your cards and calls during my recent stay in the hospital. I would especially like to thank members of the Leonard Post Auxiliary for all their help (Aux. 6251, Erie CC, D6). They were all there for me when I needed them the most. Love, Carol Camillo Department Historian

On behalf of my family and myself I wish to thank the members of the VFW and the Auxiliary for your cards, notes, prayers, phone calls, and kind words of sympathy after the passing of my son Michael. Also, thank you to the many who came for visitation on Saturday. Michael passed away from a massive heart attack.

Words cannot express my appreciation for your support during this sad time in my life. You are all so very special to me. Love to all, Florence Banks, PDP

Dear Members,

Wow!!! Your reports and the pictures you have been sending are awesome! Those reports show how busy you have all been working for our Veterans. During this holiday season, remember our Veterans who have no family, are homeless, and/or have loved one’s serving overseas. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers and for their safe return home. We must all be vigilant and keep working hard to support our Veterans.

VFW National Disaster Support: Over the past few months there have been many natural disasters including four hurricanes and many wild fires. These disasters have greatly impacted many of our Veterans and their families. The VFW Emergency Relief fund needs your support and donations. You can donate three different ways: Donate Online log-on to vfw.org and click on Donate Text “NEEDS” to 27722 to make a $10 donation Mail a check payable to VFW earmarked “Emergency Relief” to: VFW, Quartermaster General, 406 West 34th Street, Kansas City, MO 64111

VFW Veterans and Military Support Programs: Refer to your Guidebook for information and details about these four programs. There are many ways to support each one!

BUDDY POPPY: Buddy Poppy displays will be judged at the Spring Conference in March. The three categories are: Promotional, Inspirational and Decorative. District Presidents – make sure you hold your judging in the next few months.

After your District judging is completed, bring three displays to Spring Conference. I will have three judges to select the winner in each category. The winning entries will then move on to be judged in Kansas City at the National Convention in July. Good luck to all of you. I look forward to seeing all of the displays. If your Auxiliary creates a display, make sure your chairman sends me a report!

VFW National Home: Bucks for Bikes is going great. Many Auxiliaries have been hosting fundraisers and using banks to support this project. Thank you all!

I have received questions why Auxiliaries have not been credited for their Health and Happiness donation. This report is on the “to-do” list for the MALTA programming team. National is working hard trying to make the report available. As soon as the information is available from National I will make sure to credit your Auxiliary. Please be patient! I have your reports and you will get the credit!

Military and Veteran Family Helpline: This free service gives hope to struggling military veteran families. Refer to your Guidebook and promote this program. It could help someone in your local community or even a family member.

VETERAN FAMILIES in CRISIS: This is President Denise’s Special Project. Our goal is to raise funds for Unmet Needs and the VFW Department of New York Emergency Relief Fund. We must spread awareness that there are Veteran Families in our communities who need assistance. We must also make Veterans and their Families aware that there is help out there for them and that our great organization cares about all of our Veterans and their families!

Each District, County Council, and Auxiliary President should have received a ticket in their President packet that was distributed at Department Convention in June. For a donation of $15.00 your Auxiliary has a chance to win a $100.00 gift certificate. There will be one winner chosen from each District. Many Auxiliaries have already purchased the ticket received in their packet. When you send your donation and ticket stub you will receive credit under the F/C column on the program report form. Send your check to Department Treasurer Kim White (earmarked Families in Crisis) and mail your ticket stub to me!

This year, I am asking that each member send a photo of their Veteran Hero or Service member to be displayed on our Wall of Heroes at the June Convention. The photo of your hero can be in uniform while serving or a recent photo – you choose. Photos will not be returned to you so send me a photocopy on regular paper. I have already received many photos for this project. Thank you for sharing your Hero with us. I cannot wait to see the Department of New York’s WALL of HEROES! Keep sending me pictures of your Heroes. Have a Safe and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year’s!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!! Let’s … “Catch the Dream for Our Veterans” because … “Our Veterans’ Love is More Precious than Gold.” Loyally, Kimberley

Greetings my Sisters and Brothers! As the Holiday Season is upon us and we spend time with family and friends let us not forget those who are not able to be with us!

Now is a great time to “REMEMBER.” Host a POW/MIA ceremony at your holiday events. Keep those who cannot share a holiday with their loved one’s in your thoughts and prayers.

As you notice all the holiday displays around your communities keep an extra eye open for those who include the American Flag in their display. It would be a nice gesture to present them with a “Respect for the Flag” Citation which can be found on the VFW Auxiliary website.

As we all know this is the season for giving! During the holiday time, as you are being generous with all of your gifts and sending out your holiday cards, show your patriotic spirit by using American Flag Stamps. Add an American Flag sticker to your gifts boxes or bags.

Send a holiday greeting card to our Servicemen and women who are serving overseas!

Pearl Harbor Day ~ December 7, 2017 A Day to Remember The Flag should be flown at

half-staff from sunrise until sunset.

Until next time … May God Bless you, our Veterans, and our Country. We should all remember

to … “Catch the Dream for Our Veterans” because … “Our Veterans’ Love is

More Precious than Gold!”

Fly your flag … Report, Report, Report … and always stay true to your Red, White, and Blue!

Dear Sisters and Brothers, One of the busiest times of the year is here again. I have a few reminders that will make it easy for you to Recruit, Retain and Rejoin members while you are shopping, wrapping, and decorating. Remember that holiday parties, hospital and nursing home visits, and spreading holiday cheer are all recruiting opportunities. Start with “A Bright Smile and Positive Attitude ~ They are Required for Goal Achievement.” Wear your Auxiliary pin or any one of the wide variety of items available for purchase from the VFW Store. They are terrific openers. Then you can lead into “Talking Points” and the numerous ways the Auxiliary serves veterans and their families: Be warm, friendly and make eye contact when you greet people. Try to make a personal connection with prospective members so they will want to join and help our veterans. Review the National and Local “Talking Points.” It highlights the Auxiliary history, mission and services. The Auxiliary Membership Pamphlet and the Facts Leaflet has up-to-date information and figures on the Auxiliary programs that illustrate our … “Unwavering Support for Uncommon Heroes” and how we … “Catch the Dream for Our Veterans.” Share that … “Our Veterans’ Love is More Precious than Gold.” In conversations, newspaper and other media releases include the achievemnts of the Auxiliary on all levels including Scholarship Awards, Hospital and Nursing Home volunteer hours, benefits, cancer grants, and any donations that provide support and aid to help families of active, reserve and retired veterans. Simple greeting cards are an easy way to engage with current members and reconnect with former members. Holiday, birthday and get well cards say “we care.” Invite prospective and former members, as well as their families, to the VFW/Auxiliary holiday parties. Use the sign in sheet to make follow up phone calls or to send a personal note with a membership application. Always carry VFW and Auxiliary applications.

BUSY! BUSY! BUSY! Benjamin Franklin and others have been quoted as saying “if you want something done, ask a busy person.” No one is busier than an Auxiliary member. So, Happy Recruiting, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Best Wishes for a happy and healthy New Year. Remember ~ We Are In This Together. Loyally, Judy

Dear Members, As Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season, when shopping, baking, gift wrapping and the sending out of Christmas cards takes place, it is time to think of family and friends. It is time to think about hospitalized veterans and the family members of veterans who may reside in nursing homes or a domiciliary. It is also time to think about what you can do to make their holidays brighter.

Contact the Recreation Therapy Department to find out if there is a day you can help the patients make decorations for their unit and help to make Christmas cards for their family members. Visit a local elementary school and have the children craft Christmas cards and/or decorations for the hospitals and nursing homes. Sing Christmas carols on the floors of the hospital or sponsor a small concert, plan a Christmas bingo party. Assist the staff to set up and trim the Christmas trees on the units. Assemble personal care Item packages for the veterans and/or family members.

October 28th was the second annual “A Day to Change Direction.” This is set aside as a national day of service and action to change the dialogue on mental health for American Veterans and communities. Approximately 20 veterans commit suicide every day – that is one suicide every 72 minutes. It is especially important at this time of year that we are aware of the five signs of emotional stress. Personality Change; Withdrawal; Agitation; Poor Self-Care; and Hopelessness. If you witness anyone exhibiting these signs please offer help to them immediately or call the crisis line yourself: 1-800-273-8255 Press 1.

The second week in January is Letter Writing Week. This would make a perfect time to help a hospitalized veteran write a letter to a loved one. January 15th is National Hat Day (take hats to VA Hospital. Have Veterans

decorate them and host a contest). January 21st is National Hug Day – hug a hospitalized veteran.

Remember to think about whom you would like to nominate for Outstanding Hospital Volunteer. The deadline is March 1, 2018. I know there are many Auxiliary members deserving of this award. I have not yet received many requests for information. Be sure to contact me for details and to obtain the nomination form. Your VAVS representatives are eligible for this award. Use the social media to raise awareness by advertising all the great volunteer work you do and to recruit new volunteers. Recognize those who do the work. A little recognition goes a long way.

Speaking of recognition! I have received many reports which show a lot of hard work and dedication toward our hospitalized veterans. I would like to recognize Lake Chautauqua Memorial VFW Auxiliary to Post No. 8647 (Mayville, D 6) for their donation of $8,730 and the hard work they do for the hospitalized Veterans.

Continue to send reports monthly by email or USPS. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Let us continue to … “Catch the Dream for Our Veterans” because … “Our Veterans’ Love is More Precious than Gold.” From my home to yours may you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Loyally, Rosalie

INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE

Mary Makosky ~ Department Chaplain 2017–2018

“Life’s Silent Times” by: Garnett Ann Schultz

I marvel at life’s silent times When all the world is still,

The quiet moments I so love, My dreams I then fulfill.

The sun above is shining down Yet never makes a sound,

The majesty of reaching fields Where solitude abounds.

Life’s silent times lend gentle peace Just as the storm would end,

I find the miracles of life Around the distant bend.

The earth is still – all Nature smiles In quietness complete, I gaze afar to friendly hills Where earth and sky would meet. My heart delights to snowflakes soft That quietly touch the earth, The tender moments in the Spring Midst magic of rebirth. I sit alone – enjoy it all, No hurry and no strife, God lends me hope and faith ideal In silent times of life.

Our Veterans’ Love is More Precious than Gold Catch the Dream for Our Veterans

Dear Auxiliary members, Our nation and organization rest in the hands of our future leaders and we, as mentors, have the responsibility to share our knowledge to help them succeed. As Nelson Mandela said “A leader … is like a shepherd. He stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing all along they are being directed from behind.”

December is Aids Awareness Month, National Tie Month, Safe Toys and Gifts Month, and Operation Santa Paws.

Here are a few dates in December and January to help you plan a couple of “fun” events! DECEMBER: 1-7 – Cookie Cutter Week

3-9 – Recipe Greetings for the Holiday Week 4 – World Wildlife Conservation Day and National Sock Day

12 – Poinsettia Day; 12-20 – Hanukkah 15 – International Tea and Cupcake Day; 25 – Christmas Day

December 26 to January 1 – Kwanzaa JANUARY: 1 – Global Family Day and Polar Bear Plunge/Swim Day

6 – Armenian Christmas Day; 8 – War on Poverty Day 15 – Humanitarian Day (do a community service project in honor of

Martin Luther King's service); 23 – National Pie Day January 25 – National Irish Coffee Day

A few ideas might include a holiday tea and cupcake party, a best decorated holiday sock party or a holiday recipe exchange. Enjoy your holiday season and best wishes for a healthy and prosperous 2018!

It is still not too late to host a writing event for middle school students and share your writings with the Library of Congress through the Veterans History Project. See your District President for the information or you can find the criteria outlined on the National website under the youth programs www.vfwauxiliary.org. Remember, in order for President Denise to be eligible to be inducted into the Circle of Excellence, we need to have those stories reported and submitted to the Library of Congress.

You should continue to recognize youth with Random Acts of Patriotism (R.A.P.) coins to encourage and reward patriotism. If a child is seen thanking a veteran, properly placing their hand on their heart during the Pledge of Allegiance or involved in some other activity that promotes patriotism, give them a R.A.P. coin. It’s a fun and unique way to engage children elementary age and younger!

Remember to continue to recruit all eligible youth who are a minimum age of 16. These young people will be the group you mentor as they are the future leaders of our country no matter the community they will reside. Lastly, it is most important to send in your reports which is vital to the organization. If you have any questions, please let me know. I can be reached by email anytime or cell phone after 6 PM.

Let’s try to give President Denise the best New Year’s ever by achieving 100% reporting by January 15, 2018! There are many ways we can honor … “Our Veterans’ with Our Love that is More Precious than Gold” and as we … “Catch the Dream for Our Veterans!” Loyally, Darlene

One winner from each Auxiliary is due to the Department Chairman [Karen Mack] by April 15, 2018. This contest is open to students in grades 9 to 12. Entry Forms can be obtained by downloading from the National website or by contacting me.

How are you spreading the word about VFW and Auxiliary Scholarships? Here are a few examples: newspaper, television, radio, telephone and personal contact with your family, friends, and community. Our goal is to increase the number of student entries from the previous year. I know we want to help our youth as they are our future.

You can help the Department achieve its goal of being 100% in participation and 100% in report-ing. All you need to do is report to me by the 1st of every month!

If you have any questions, please contact me. Let’s spread the word about our Scholarships so we can all … “Catch the Dream for Our Veterans” and show how … “Our Veterans’ Love is More Precious than Gold.”
