THE NEW ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND We are having fun playing on the new adventure playground.

SUMMER HOLIDAY CLUB

What fun we all had in Summer Holiday Club this year. Besides all the games, dance, drama and sports activities, we design and decorated a wind chime during week one and in week two we made our own special sunhats. We concluded each week by making our lunch, decorating a bun and playing party games. Booking forms for our Autumn Holiday Club have been sent out with the children this week. Please be aware that numbers are limited, so book early if you wish your child to attend.

As we return for the new academic year here are a few housekeeping notes

Uniform - Please name everything, including PE kit! We have a much better chance of returning lost property to the rightful owner if an item is named. Please remember that we do not allow children to wear earrings, braided hairpieces, ‘flashing’ trainers or nail varnish Snacks - The snacks which girls in Year 1 to 6 are allowed to bring for their morning break include – a piece of cheese, small portion of fruit/vegetable, box of raisins (not chocolate covered), a fruit smoothie, and bread sticks. These can be brought in a plastic bag or tub. Sweets, crisps and chocolate are not permitted. It is important that nuts are not brought into school, as there are children who suffer from an acute allergy to them. Mobile phones - We do not encourage girls to bring mobile phones to school and should only be brought in by girls who are catching a bus or walking to meet parents. However, if parents want their daughter to have a phone with them, these must be clearly named and handed in (switched off) each day to the school office. Parents should write to Mrs Edwards requesting permission for their daughter to bring a mobile phone into school. Medication – If your daughter needs to take prescribed medication during the school day then medicines must be handed into school with the instructions, in the original packaging, as well as a completed medication form. Illness – If your child has had a stomach upset we would advise you that, in order to control any cross infection, they

must be kept away from school for 48 hours from the last episode of diarrhoea and/or vomiting. This is in accordance with the advice from the Health Protection Agency. Parking – We are very aware of the parking difficulties around school, but ask that parents are courteous to local residents. Please do not park where you may cause a risk to others or offence to the local residents. Can we also remind parents not to park in the school grounds at any time as all parking spaces are reserved for staff. After School Care – After School Care takes place in Mulberry House until 6.00pm. Fees are charged after the term has finished. Events and updates - We look forward to seeing you at various events taking place this term, which promises to be

very busy and exciting. Please keep abreast of what is happening by looking at our website www.WGSF.org.uk .

All letters sent from the office are available here and any forthcoming dates and events are listed, together with our latest news and photographs. Contacts details - Please also keep the school office informed of any change of details, including telephone numbers, home addresses or email addresses.

YEAR 3 Year 3 have enjoyed making shadows on the playground as part of our science work on ‘Light and Shadows’. We tried to make a monster shape and we also made tiny shadows that we could hardly see.

YEAR 4

Year 4 enjoyed their first school visit to Wakefield 1. We were focusing on our Tudors topic, enquiring, discovering and filming Tudor life. To start the day we had to decide if life was simpler in Tudor times than the present day and we kept returning to this question throughout the day. One of the highlights of the day for many of us was making Tudor pesto, using fresh herbs, breadcrumbs and vinegar. We also got to taste it. YEAR 5

5SS have enjoyed using the ‘follow me cards’ in Maths in order to improve our mental arithmetic 5APW enjoyed working in the science lab this week, testing materials for hardness.

In 5TH we created portraits of the Fantstic Mr Fox using chalk pastels as part of our Dahlicious Day activities.

YEAR 6 We had fun revising adverbs by acting them out and we have written a poem using adverbs to describe our thoughts and feelings on returning to school. We are waving enthusiastically!

We are busy designing competitions for Fun Morning. We are developing our teamwork and communication skills making the games at lunchtime. We hope you will have fun playing them on Saturday.

Instrumental Lessons Music lesson have now started for all girls in years 3 to 6, if you would like your daughter to learn a musical instrument in school please contact Mrs White either for more information or an application form. Labelling Instruments Please could you ensure that your daughter’s musical instrument and music bag is clearly labelled on the outside. This helps to ensure that instruments are not picked up by accident and enables quick repatriation should they go walkabout. Choir Auditions Once again Mrs White and Mrs Browning were blown away by the quality of singing that we heard during the first week of term. We heard a record number of girls this year. We are very much looking forward to working with all 4 of our choirs with many exciting performing opportunities planned over the coming year.

Performing Arts

SPORT Netball trials Girls in Year 6 are currently attending netball trials for selection to the squad. The standard of netball at the first session of trials was very high and selection will be made after careful consideration of each girl’s current ability level and future potential after observing a variety of specific Netball skills and the application of these skills in a game situation. If your daughter enjoys playing netball she may benefit from joining a Netball Club outside school, details of which can be found on the internet.

Dance Club We are very sorry that, due to unforeseen circumstances, Dance Club for girls in Year 5 and 6 will not start until towards half term.

British Triathlon Congratulations to Eleanor Bridgman (5APW) for being placed 6th in Yorkshire for the British Triathlon Yorkshire Junior Summer Series (Tristars 1) having competed in various events throughout the county including Triathlons, Duathlons and Aquathlons.
